Passage 53 is tucked away behind a nondescript facade on the rather busy Passage des Panoramas shopping arcade; the sign has been painted over and white blinds completely obscure the windows. Inside is this tiny rectangular room which seats perhaps five or six tables. Waiters make their way down from the kitchen via a precarious spiral staircase, balancing dishes to... More

I have arrived for a lunch to Passage 53. The place is small and simple yet elegant. I had the lunch 5 course tasting menu for $120. While expensive, it was worth it. Each dish was amazing. The combination between the Japanese minimalism and the French cuisine, made this meal calming, delicious and memorable.

Very small and special place, within an also very special passage. While food and service are outstanding, it is way too pricey for a 2 star of this quality. You pay for a 3 stars what you can get on a good 1 star restaurant. Yet, it is worthwhile the visit.

Japanese chef Shinichi Sato and Guillame Guedj opened Passage 53 in 2009 located in the famous Passage des Panoramas. They quickly received their first Michelin star and thei following year they were awarded their second Michelin star. The restaurant is tiny with only a dozen table so reservation is a Must! Passage 53 houses a historic spiral staircase from which... More

This restaurant is a little hard to find as there is no sign and the 53 has been painted over. Once you do find it you are in for a wonderful dining experience. Chef Sato determines the tasting menu and he may change it as the evening progresses. The freshest of ingredients are used and the flavors are complex and... More

Once you manage to find this restaurant (it is so discreet it is almost impossible to find tucked behind net curtains in a tiny pedestrianised turn of the century shopping arcade) you are in for a treat. We were welcomed by the owner who is also the maitre d' who explained the evening's menu with great care and precision. There... More

The food was visually beautiful, but not always as flavoursome as you would expect. The service impeccable, but the restaurant lacked atmosphere. Needed to have some low music playing as it was only six tables of two, and very quiet so you didn't feel like you could talk. A little uncomfortable for us personally. But if you go you must... Came here for our engagement dinner, the service was candidly quite good. The food was interesting, sometimes delicious, and the space was pretty minimalist. However, towards the end of our meal, my fiance started feeling a bit queasy. We finished up the last course, ate our desserts, and then headed to a bar recommended by our server. Not even 15... We found a dead ant under our chocolate cake (crush injury or chocolate intoxication?) and also a black hair on a plate. We decided to handle it in an extremely discrete way by sending the restaurant a polite and kind email where we informed about the incident and gave some constructive criticism on how they could improve. An accident can... More

Staying in Opera / Bourse

Neighbourhood Profile
Opera / Bourse
The neighbourhood around Opéra and Bourse is a belle époque paradise of grand boulevards, refined arcades, and mass-market art-nouveau entertainment. Here, modern day workers continue to take advantage of the legacy that nobility and finance left in the 19th century. Brightly-lit brasseries, theatres, and cinemas sit side by side with French bistros predominating in one area and Japanese restaurants in another. The area is most famous for the Palais Garnier opera house and glamorous department stores.
