My son and I went for an evening bike ride in search of ice cream for his birthday dessert. It was already 9:45pm, and it was by chance that we wandered into La Caleche and was very warmly greeted by its owner and assured that they had dozens of choices of ice cream for us to enjoy! We had a... More

Stumbled across this place as a happy accident after a lovely early evening wander around the 6th arrondissement of Paris...Straightforward menu to choose from - very delicious and fresh food! Perfect way to soak up some real Parisian atmosphere on a small quiet side street in a place oozing with charm - thanks for the warm welcome!

If you want an authentic, good place for French food this is definitely the place to go. One of Parisians most loved insider tips.

We stumbled upon this tiny gem on our walk home from a day of touring the city. Philip could not have welcomed us more warmly as we settled in with spirits before our meal. Other diners included local couples and a family with a young child and her grandfather and two very comfortable dogs. The owner welcomed all with the... More

My last night in Paris (March 18, 2016) was spent having a wonderful dinner at this bistro located down the block from my hotel (Hotel d'Orsay). The owner was so gracious and kind, explaining the beautiful menu and making excellent recommendations. The food was amazing, the restaurant itself charming and cozy, and the wine list and recommendation was truly delightful.... More

We came across this restaurant for lunch last week while staying at a hotel in an adjacent street. Having done so, we returned for dinner the two following nights. The hospitable owner was very pleasant and happy to deal with two tourists who wished to practise their schoolchild French. The food and wine, while not inexpensive, were excellent as was... More

We were on our first night in Paris. Wandering in a jet lagged daze. Unaware of the way French eateries are separated by what they serve Restaurants serve full meals, brasseries and cafes sort of a la carte . So we wandered into la Caleche wanting small plates. The place was buzzing. All tables full or reserved. At first the... More

We chanced upon this restaurant on a sweltering day in Paris on 11.7.2015. Sitting down outside having done a mini grand tour from early morning we initially asked for mineral water with some trepidation because it seemed so insufficient a request at lunch time. The manager however was extremely welcoming and not at all pushy. We imbibed our water &... More

Although very alluring from the outside, it turned out to be a highly dissapointing place. Unfortunately the waiter (the owner?) was unusually unpleasant and extremely disrespectful. If you don't feel like being offended, give this restaurant a wide berth!

It probably is the location of this restaurant in the centre of Paris in a street with hardly any other restaurants that the behaviour of the owner can be attributed to. It was raining and we were seeking shelter and ordered beer. We were not too hungry wherefore we wanted to order salads and a meat dish. That was when... More

Staying in Saint-Germain-des-Pres

Neighbourhood Profile
Saint-Germain-des-Pres
In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, life is effortlessly chic and all things are beautiful. The main boulevard is dotted with famed terraced cafés, haut-couture shops, ivy-covered railings and fine-dining restaurants. Antique dealers and art galleries surround the fine art school and small museums hide in unassuming squares. The neighbourhood’s namesake church is the oldest in Paris and is the backdrop for talented musicians every weekend. The Luxembourg Gardens house the national senate, splendid lawns and flourishing flower beds. Famous faces and bourgeois Parisians frequent Saint Germain accompanied by the students of Rue Saint Guillaume and Rue des Saints-Pères. This is a neighbourhood where afternoon people-watching from a café or playing cards in a brasserie are a key part of the daily fabric.
