All reviews curry poppadoms smoked ham pickle tray lamb rogan josh nihari rice mixed starter onion bhaji best indian indian meal indian restaurant in harrogate great meal saturday night visited harrogate visited this restaurant
As Harrogate locals, this is our Indian restaurant of choice for several reasons …..
Great ambience, the staff add to this with light hearted/good humoured banter.
Excellent, friendly, professional service.
Really good, reasonably priced food, the staff interact with you to ensure you get exactly...what you want and I’ve never been disappointed.
It’s always a pleasure to go and I look forward to me next visit.More
The restaurant is a little dated but the staff are friendly and it was clean. The food was very nice including the chicken cashew curry and chicken madras. The family nann bread is served vertically and is enough for 4. Worth a visit
The food is outstanding, you must order the family garlic naan, it’s to die for.
The staff are great and the family who own it are fantastic. They will cater for anyones food needs and nothing is too much hassle.
I recommend you try this...restaurant if you’re in town, it’s the best Indian food Harrogate has to offerMore
Visited here whilst on an overnight stay in Harrogate with my husband. We have been here before, a couple of years ago and enjoyed it so thought we'd stick with what we knew.
We booked ahead to ensure a table was available.
Let's start with...the environment :
The restaurant was really bust and everyone was chatting and enjoying the bit of the festive spirit so all was good there.
Not so good at all. I ordered a chicken korma (I know, I know. Not even a real curry!) to be accompanied by a peshwari naan. My husband just fancied an assortment of Indian snacks as apposed to a big main meal. In all fairness, my husbands request was not on the menu but they were happy to cook him what he had asked for and although it was super greasy when it arrived, it had all the elements he has asked for. My korma though........ Oh dear me 🙄 I counted 7 pieces of chicken in the whole dish and none of it was of a good quality. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm actually a chef myself and appreciate that the thigh and leg meat of the chicken holds the better flavour but personally I would have expected it to be mixed in with at least a little bit of breast meat. The pieces of chicken were not just of poor quality but cut into tiny bits too. However, the naan bread was really delicious.
The service: all the staff were busy and we were not waiting long to be served. Can't really grumble with that really.
The cleanliness : where to start????
This restaurant is definitely not for the faint of heart! The tables and menu's are sticky with grime. The mirrors and windows are foggy with grease and all the door handles are grimey too. My husband said the toilets were OK but all the door handles were mucky and although he washed his hands he made sure he used gel on them when he got back to his seat as he said he didn't feel clean. The doors from the restaurant to the kitchen were full of bits of food and greasy hand prints. Overall the place is filthy in my opinion.
The price: average
In short, I really wouldn't recommend to anyone and it baffles me that this is rated the second best Indian in the whole of harrogate. Just don't bother, we won't be visiting again.More
Fantastic service and delicious food throughout, from initial inquiry to the evening itself. We booked a table of 15 for our office Christmas party and had an array of requests for the evening which was no problem for owner Umar, he accommodated everything we asked...for and more, nothing was too much trouble. On the night the service was fast and efficient and Umar and his staff were considerably tolerant of us. Thank you for making our office party a success.More
I visited Shalimar restaurant for my first time together with my brother mother and sister in law. My brother had told me how good the food was but I am always very critical about food. I am a professional chef with over 45 years experience....I love to travel the world trying food. After traveling in India I fell in love with the attention to detail and the expert way they use spices. I often make my self Indian dishes.
We were welcomed at the door by the owner of the restaurant Mr jamil Asghar . He and his sons chatted and helped us choose our dishes. Without boring you with all the details ik can reassure you that every single dish was absolutely delicious. Perfectly spiced and freshly cooked. After telling the family how good there food was they came with taka dal and panner for us extra to taste. All very good. We expected to see the cost of the dishes back when we got the bill. But there was no charge. This just shows me that they love to cook and serve the best food that they can .
I live in Holland but when I come back to see my family. Restaurant Shalimar will be my first port of call. I am looking forward to let Mr Asghar choose all my dishes . I know I will get the best food , service at a very reasonable price.
Thank you family Asghar and I hope to see you again soon
