Dropped in for a coffee this morning and asked if we could sit at a booth once it was cleared. We were told to take a seat at another table in a very abrupt manner from what looked like a young female manager. We never got to the booth & had to sit on the very uncomfortable wooden seats. We... Very fashionably meagre portions, extremely uninspiring and tasteless with a grand bill at the end. Emperor's new clothes kind of place. Terribly disappointing, especially as we will probably never get the chance for Edinburgh's hostelries to impress as was a trip for a special purpose and unlikely to be repeated.

I have frequented Continis in the past and was a big fan of the pizzas so was a little disappointed when I found out they got rid of them off the menu but wow the new food is brilliant. The new decor is really beautiful with white marble but my only comment would be it's a little bit of a... More

A refurbished area at the entrance has now replaced the booths which I rather liked. Dropped in on a Saturday lunchtime hoping to sit outside in the warm spring sunshine but it looks as if there are now no outdoor tables - shame! Sat at the back of the restaurant which does not look as if it has changed much... More

We elected for an impromptu lunch at Contini's. Both menu and interior decor have been overhauled, the latter having been done very well. The starters were prosciutto speck and contadino; a wee bit of extra seasoning would have given the latter a bit more taste. The main courses were a big improvement;the Milanese was a generous portion, moist and full... More

The new menu is just wonderful, great service from waiting staff who answered my menu questions with detail. The wine was fab too and I would recommend the limone dessert!! This visit was the first time I had been back since the refurbishment and new menu and WOW what a fabulous transformation!!

Visited here on Tuesday evening for the pre-theatre £18 per head option. Food was exceptional and portion sizes very good considering we were eating from a set menu. Particular highlights were the beautiful mozzarella di buffala (served with asparagus, honey and charcoal toast - a flavour combination made in heaven!) and the Branzino (chargrilled sea bass), delicious! Their lovely sommelier,... More

Have eaten here before but sometime ago. Recent makeover has made it very different, but food quality is still the same at very good. It's not your typical Italian, no pizzas or pasta, all proteins with lovely accompaniments and a great side order menu as well. Had a crispy sea bream which was very good and the side of fried... Went in. Due to previous reviews, must have caught it on a bad day, service was excellent but food was seriously underwhelming, beetroot risotto was very overcooked, mush in fact, menu was pretty restricted for a lunchtime and we struggled to find something that everyone wanted, maybe because they are on George street they think they can charge the prices they do but sorry poor... Description
Italy and Scotland meet here in Edinburgh at Contini Ristorante (formerly Centotre), a grand but relaxed, easy restaurant with a simple mantra; good food is a labour of love. With nothing added but passion and care and nothing removed other than unnecessary additives, Contini Ristorante's food is purely, simply about good Italian flavours to be enjoyed at their very best, freshest and most delicious. From breakfast until late, visitors to Contini Ristorante enjoy the traditionalism of Italian food with a Scottish twist in the use of local produce, sitting proudly alongside specialties shipped in especially from Italy, all bought direct from suppliers in order to keep prices down and variety high while supporting smaller scale makers and breeders. In the beautiful Contini Ristorante dining room, with its sculpted pillars and high, high ceilings everybody from tourists to business people to families with children to romancing couples enjoy the same attentive but relaxed service and beautifully presented food.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
