Visited with my fiancé for dinner and drinks. The table was very sticky to begin with and we couldn't pin point someone to re wipe it for us as everyone was running about. I ordered the fish cakes but they were off the menu which our server never mentioned but I opted for the classic Caesar Salad in the tortilla... More

I've been to Slug and Lettuce, in both the Omni Centre and George Street, many times over the years. My partner and I were in Edinburgh for a few days visiting family and headed to a concert in the capital. I recommended that we went to Slug and Lettuce for lunch. The last time I visited the George Street branch... More

Came here after a lovely afternoon at the nearby cinema, especially for the burger and drink for £7 deal which we thought sounded great. The pair of us ordered our burgers and drinks, and asked for a pint of lager which was included in the deal, and a glass of rosé wine, also mentioned as included in the deal, as... More

Called here before we went to see the Brian Cox lecture. It was light and airy with plenty of seating areas. Drinks were reasonably priced but the service was a little slow. The bar staff were pleasant and the beer was good. It's less than a minutes walk from the Playhouse Theatre so great for pre Theatre drinks or snacks... More

this was booked as 1 of the surprises for my 50th weekend away with the girls - this was the best experience during the weekend by a country mile - all of us thoroughly enjoyed it, which was made great by our lovely hostess Kate. We made 3 cocktails (I think) and 1 shot at the end - (not quite... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
