Stumbled across SC in Sept 14, and loved it. Came both mornings of outer trip to Edinburgh. Came back March 17 for a music gig, and couldn't wait to come back. Didn't disappoint. Really friendly, lovely fresh food, a great place and miles above the generic corporate chain places. Relaxed, no rush, no big wait despite being busy, no slip... More

Great place to catch a full Scottish breakfast! Food is terrific and the service was good. After the meal, service sort of disappeared as we had to ask for our check and get up to pay it ourselves though it seemed everyone else got service till the end. This doesn't discourage me from going back as the food again was... More

Stopped at this cafe, on a street FULL of cafes, on a Sunday afternoon. The cappuccinos and cakes we ordered were terrific. The place was very busy, but we got served very quickly by a very friendly waitress. Would definitely eat here again.

My wife and I called for breakfast here and, as soon as we saw the number of people either sitting or waiting to be seated at 9.30 on a Saturday morning, we though that this was going to be really nice and our expectation was not mis-placed. The breakfast choice ranged form a 'full Scottish' to healthy plates. We settled... More

I have visited the SX cafe on my last 2 visits to Edinburgh and have been left disappointed on each visit. Both on a Saturday and no later than 10am, I have twice attempted to order eggs royale to be informed they had run out of salmon. If I hadn't read other reviews that people had eaten it I would... Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
