Despite the tasty food..below average sized portions, chips similar to McDonalds, also paying by card includes extra charges to process.. service was delayed as the waitress clearly out of her depth trying to serve 7 people..probably ok for drinks but nothing else!

Called in here for a quick cocktail and to take a 5 minute break from exploring the city. I ordered a banoffee martini which was lovely :)! I would recommend it! My partner ordered bulmers cider which was nice.

So me and some friends found this place by accident on a hungry quest for food. We were lured in by the 25% discount for students, win. So me and another friend ordered the steak sandwich whereas my other friend had the special of the day which was seabass with potatoes. All the food was lovely and we enjoyed our... More

Let's start with the service, absolutely nothing to complain about. The staff was extremely nice and attentive. Now it's time to talk about the food. So far, the best food I've ever had in Edinburgh. I've ordered the sandwich of marinated buccleuch steak, mushroom and mustard cream, with straw fries. Well, the bread was so moist and the meat so... More

Had a lovely wee late lunch there today. Am currently doing slimming world so it's so hard to find somewhere where foods aren't laddled in sauces etc. I had the salmon salad which came with an oil sauce but asked if they had balsamic vinegar and they where so happy to oblige. They don't do kids portions for my 6... More

My friend and I came to Villager on a Saturday evening for cocktails. We had three each. I tried the Strange Fruit, Tapatio and Ting, and the special, which was something to do with hemingway that had gin and st. germain. The Strange Fruit was sweet but really good. My friend had the Choc Espressotini which looked amazing. The drink... More

What a great place. Found it by chance. The menu was different and the cocktail menu was wonderful. We had a great meal and the atmosphere was relaxed. Very attentive and friendly staff. Firstly enquired about the menu and dairy-free options and this was no problem at all unlike some places. Good value food, venison steak and chicken were both cooked excellently with good flavours on both. Would definitely recommend.

Having a Daughter unable to eat Gluten severely restricts all choices for eating out. On my recent trip to Edinburgh it was brought home just how miserable and restrictive a problem this is. From hundreds of restaurants you are cut down to a few and when you don't know your way around it means hours of searching, as even if... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
