This is one of the most unique bars in the area in my opinion. It has a super chill and relaxed atmosphere with candles everywhere. It feels very welcoming. The Rose & Thistle beer is delicious!

We were in Edingburgh on a coach trip and was given a flyer for the restaurant, as we walked by. We were drawn in by the offer of mussels, which we had. The service was excellent, the mussels were tasty and the beer very pleasant. The one problem, was there are no toilet facilities for inferno customers on the ground... More

Came across this spot while looking for somewhere for dinner along Rose St and had a really enjoyable evening. Food is really lovely, and the vegetarian risotto was particularly tasty. Nice selection of Scottish ales, gins and even Scottish wine! Staff friendly and service was excellent, would definitely recommend.

First night dinner, and tucked in a back street was this gem. Great food and traditional Scottish food as well as others. Scottish wine too!!!!! The service and welcome and atmosphere made it though, so a huge thumbs up to them. Love the Gin bottles too.........

We were looking for a place to have dinner with 2 small kids around 6:30 pm on Easter Saturday, and all the places on Rose street seemed to be getting full and noisy at that point. Then we found 1780. There was pub crowd there too, but the place has a nice, separate and quiet dining room, they had highchairs... More

I had been wandering about for a while hoping to find a place where I could warm up with a drink and try some haggis, and stumbled upon this place. The staff were absolutely lovely and attentive. I really enjoyed the haggis, it was really tasty and well-seasoned. The sticky toffee pudding was an absolute treat. If I go back... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
