We visited as a work's Christmas function on 19 December. Our table was booked for 4pm so we arrived and were shown to our table which was ready for us. One of our party asked to take his phone out of his jacket before it was taken away and one of the staff joked "nobody is going to steal it"... More

Myself and my boyfriend were on our first visit to Edinburgh, and on a Saturday night after attempting several restaurants for dinner, we saw Maxies, and with a sign that claims 'best fish and chips in the world' we thought it would be worth a try. We were seated immediately very close to the bar, and for a Saturday night... More

I booked Maxie's for an evening meal and a first date and asked on the phone for a cosy table. When we arrived we were welcomed in and sat in a lovely upper section in a cosy side area. Maxies is warm and welcoming and just relaxes you when you go in. Our food was fantastic, not the fanciest fare... More

We stopped in for a drink after spotting Maxie's atop Grassmarket in Edinburgh, and climbing the steps to Castlehill. After freezing our way around the Christmas Market, Maxie's was a haven! Lovely welcoming, relaxing surroundings and the quotes to live by scattered around the bistro

Visited on fri the 12th December for a works function. The food was outstanding and the service was second to none ,however the wine red and white was terrible, verging on undrinkable and very expensive at that. ( the only problem is if you drink the spirits and beer it will cost).

Probably more seafood on a plate than the trawler that caught them! Mussels, scallops, prawns and oysters were obviously not enough.....add the catch of the day (which happened to be salmon) and you have a fish mountain! Beautifully cooked in a wonderful fish jus. Definitely not for the small appetite, but I'm pretty sure that Max would reduce the quantity... More

Visited here a few days ago and it was by far the worst dinner experience I've ever had! We dropped in to see if they had a table for 3 guests around 4.45pm. The girl was very sweet but she didn't seem to know much and had to ask someone else... every time! They did and she took us through... More

Food was lovely, had starter and main courses (no room for desert). Food is freshly made and not the usual het up rubbish served to unsuspecting tourists. Views from the terrace overlooking Victoria street are amazing. We will most definitely be back. Service was polite and prompt. Decor not to my taste but then I'm not eating that!!! Man in... More

Four of us had lunch here on a Saturday. It is located very close to the castle and so is an ideal location. The entrance is off the street and down some stairs. There is a terrace but we did not see this. The décor is a bit dated and tatty. This is not a major issue but with an... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
