Good selection of food in a comfortable, relaxed venue, with plenty of nooks and crannies. The raised seating area with cushions and comfortable seats is a great idea. The staff were friendly and helpful and the Cranachan was well worth trying. Altogether a very enjoyable evening.

Don't let the entrances of this place put you off. I got a "deal" from a website for a meal for 2 otherwise would not have dreamed of trying it, as the entrance on Johnston Terrance (near the top of the Royal Mile, by The Hub) doesn't do the place justice. Once inside, it's a beautiful old, quirky restaurant that... More

We wanted to go to a restaurant next door (Hanams is excellent) but unfortunately it was closed for refurbishment at the time, so we decided to try Maxie's after hearing some good reviews. However, it was very disapointing. The restaurant was freezing. There was only one other table in and the atmosphere was dire. The waitress working looked like she... More

So glad we managed to book a table in 'this restaurant. It was so popular, the plates of food coming out of the kitchen were mouthwatering. The menu wasn't too extensive, which helped making a decision. Everything is sourced locally, yes, great food, enjoyed it.

My wife and I went to Maxine's bistro last Saturday evening, we arrived quite late and must have been as the kitchen was closing. The bistro is sort of difficult to find being one level up. However we were served by a polite waitress and made to feel very welcome. If you decide to eat, take a look at the... More

Visited with my husband for dinner. We sat in the comfy area and enjoyed two courses and drinks. This restaurant really uses great Scottish produce to create lovely food. Out by the ladies toilets there is a cool roof terrace where you can see a view of the castle. Staff are great here too.

The restaurant was presented well. Staff friendly and attentive. We had the fish and chips. It was under done and frozen chips. Edible but not worth the money. It was a beautiful place with a great atmosphere. Good potential.

My family had the wonderful experience of dining at Maxies on a recent trip to Edinburgh. The food was delightful - I had the chicken stuffed with haggis, potatoes, and veggies. It was excellent, and the atmosphere was charming. The wait staff was friendly and the service was great. I would highly recommend it!

This place is a real hidden gem. We stumbled across it after looking for a nice bar to have a drink with friends that wasn't a pub. Inside was very rustic and the decor is almost medieval but it was fantastic, the staff were very attentive and happy for us to sit and enjoy a drink. The food smells coming... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
