Excellent lunch ! Went here on a recommendation and can see why. Freindly and efficient service, tasty sounding dishes appeared to be on the menu. We loved the kedgeree we had! We will be back!

We had an evening meal in the bar-bistro. The service from the young waiting staff was excellent - friendly, spot on and prompt, which was right up our street. The meal we had was fantastic home cooking - a really winey venison casserole that reminded...me of Paris was a highlight. The bar-bistro is very atmospheric with low ceiings and nice Scottish decor. Highly recommended - need to book in advance.More

We were in the bar section for our meal which we booked as a casual night with friends. We were very happy with our choice as the food was beautifully cooked and very tasty. Would definitely recommend it.

Had lunch with friends while in town. We had been recommended to try the Burt, but to book in advance, so we did by calling in person and speaking to someone on the reception desk who took our booking for four. However, on the day,...our friends arrive first and despite giving our names, were assured we did not have a booking. Thankfully, there was a table and we were fitted in, but it was disappointing. The food was good quality, and plentiful, but I would not say exceptional. We were dining in the bar area, and I would describe the food as high-standard pub fare. The main restaurant may be a higher standard.More

An unforgettable experience and not for the right reasons. Never in my 72 years have I ever felt the need to send my food back to the kitchen...and I have experienced some pretty mediocre fare in my life. At Burts restaurant I had to send...my main course of sirloin steak (£28) back, not once, but TWICE! My wife and I both had the steak, ordered 'medium'. One touch of the steak knife was enough to tell me that something was amiss and sure enough, when I cut into it ,the beef was very rare. I cut it across the middle just to check...rare throughout! The lovely front of house lady apologised and took the steak back to the kitchen to have it properly cooked. By the time my food returned to the table, my wife had almost finished her own food. Soldiering on, I cut a piece of steak, determined to enjoy the evening..(my wife's special birthday treat)...only to taste the bitterness of burnt toast! On flipping the steak over it had been burnt black! Not only had the chef burnt the steak, he or she had plated it up so as to HIDE error! I showed the blackened sirloin to the waitress who then offered to have a fresh dish prepared and, quite reluctantly, I accepted her offer. My wife had long finished her food when my steak eventually arrived. My wife’s birthday treat was completely ruined by the experience and our initial expectation, that Burts might become our new favourite restaurant, were dashed. I paid the bill in full...over £100... no discount or, the usual 'complimentary desert' in such circumstances, was offered. It's back to our regular restaurant for us!More

Had lunch here today with my mother. What a lovely, clean and well run hotel. A very nice young mad showed us through to the sunny, very well done out beer garden which was a pleasure to sit in. The menu was very good and...our waitress Olivia, was so friendly and helpful. Our food was fresh, served quickly and was absolutely delicious. This hotel ticks all the boxes and we will definitely return.More

Ate in the bistro on a busy evening in the bistro so glad we had made a reservation. Mains are standard menu regulars but highlight was our starters. My partner has trout pate and I had asparagus, both gourmet standard. Huge fish & chips for...me but partner found the coconut chicken gougons a bit bland. Brth mains though were huge portions, perhaps a bit to much.More

We'd popped in her for a drink after a couple of local walks (good for real ale - a relative rarity in these parts) and were surprised by the length and breadth of the menu, so decided that the next day, if we weren't too...hot and tired after a walk up Ruberslaw, we'd pop in for lunch. Was torn between the Monkfish carpaccio with grapefruit curd, and the braised pigs cheek with crispy haggis and cauliflower puree for starters - went for the former as I'd never had it before and it was a cracking dish, but I suspect the pig's cheek would have been just as good. The Guinea fowl supreme for mains was a good choice, and across the table the less adventurous (?) rare roast beef salad also got a big thumbs up. The desserts didn't let the side down either. As others have said, the staff here are all friendly and do their jobs really well - far from the norm in large tourist-town hotels, so well done to them. It's not fine dining (though some of the dishes might sound like it), but you would struggle to find as good a meal at this level/price anywhere else in the area I suspect. Recommended.More

Had dinner in small dining room which unfortunately lacks atmosphere. Menu was good and varied. The waiter unfortunately over estimated how many plates he could carry at once and one guest got hot coffee split on him. Said he’d take it off the bill but...didn’t.More

We were staying at the Townhouse Hotel, the sister hotel across the square, but had a lunch, a dinner, and drinks in this hotel. The food is excellent, good quality and well cooked. The range of drinks in the bar is very good and, thanks...to some lovely weather, we were able to make use of the lovely beer garden. Added to that, the staff are excellent. Every single one of them was friendly, welcoming and professional - a real credit to the hotel.More

We booked a table in the bar area as we had children with us. Menu was quite limited but we all managed to find things to suit. A couple of us had the coconut chicken and wedges which turned out not to have a lot...of coconut flavour. The wedges were not spiced so the dish was quite plain. Pork chops were lovely but needed a steak knife. Plaice delicious. Now the desserts, they were on another level. All AMAZING definitely worth dining here for. Think a pudding tasting menu would have suited me. 😋. The staff were great, friendly and attentive.More

We stumbled onto this gem while on tour on a Sunday. Not much else was open in the area where we were. Located in a quaint hotel, the dining room was classy, the food was excellent, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Nice job.
