We enjoyed a lovely meal here, in lovely surroundings. We had Townhouse Fishcakes, venison steak (delicious), Belhaven Smoked Salmon, cinnamon poached pears, all very very tasty. The staff were lovely too and efficient. Will definitely return.

Lovely elegant surroundings, attentive staff and fabulous food. We booked a table for 7pm , our table was ready with fresh water and tea lights. My husband had fish cakes in curry sauce which were fantastic , I had the rabbit terraine which was very...good. We shared a bottle of Shiraz with was reasonably priced . While we were waiting for these starters , bread appeared with a lovely fresh pesto oil for dipping. For our mains my husband had the belly pork , which was perfectly crispy and a huge portion served with several mini sweet potato bubble and squeak seasoned with aniseed, roast leeks and carrots. I had the beef bavette with fondant potato and carrots. The food was delicious, well thought out and elegantly presented. Faultless. Fantastic Chefs, would definitely return.More

Four of us visited for my cousin's birthday who was visiting from Australia. Two members of our party order battered fish, one with chips, the other with wedges. Both were served with the same potato items which were neither one thing nor the other and...looked suspiciously like ones found in the supermarket freezer aisle. The fish itself was apparently very nice though. The 'mushy peas' were just mashed processed peas that were dry and inedible. When asked for mayonnaise, the staff member placed a whole bottle on the table!! The spiced pork belly was apparently good. The truffle and herb hen's egg served with the celeriac steak was initially left off the plate and when it arrived it was absolutely solid. The second attempt was extremely undercooked. Surely poaching an egg is a basic skill for any chef?! The standard and presentation of food served in a restaurant should match the price and in this case it most certainly did not. I felt very embarrassed for having recommended this restaurant, particularly as it was for a special occassion and extremely disappointed with the whole experience. The manager did apologise and reduce the bill.More

We phoned and pre-booked for lunch whilst visiting the town to support our rugby team playing against Melrose at The Greenyards. Contact details were taken for Covid-19 track and trace purposes. Although we chose to park near the rugby ground (opposite The Greenyards and Co-op)...and walk the short distance to the hotel, there is street parking outside the premises and I believe that it is also feasible to park opposite at The Burts Hotel which is operated by the same owners. Our booking was for the hotel's Brasserie which on arrival on a Saturday at midday was empty however it quickly filled up as lunchtime progressed. The tables were reasonably spaced so we had no concerns in that respect. The room had ornate features and had been tastefully decorated in a contemporary style so we found the surroundings comfortable and pleasant. Staff were mannerly. During our visit two female guests seemed oblivious of face mask requirements when not seated (perhaps both exempt and sharing a table to celebrate their status) and a member of staff let his slip more than a few times however everyone else was abiding by this aspect of Covid mitigation regulations. Hand sanitiser was also available. The a la carte menu had a good selection of dishes in our view and my wife opted for cod fillets and I chose the pan seared salmon (both £17.95). Whilst we were waiting for our mains some warm bread, butter and a pesto dip were provided on a complimentary basis which was welcomed. Both mains dishes were served warm, rather than hot, but were nicely presented and had nice flavours. The cod was accompanied by chorizo, baby leaks, “crispy” potatoes and a truffle celeriac puree. My wife was puzzled by small square items on her plate which she could not cut into and eventually deduced these must be the “crispy” potatoes. They appeared to have been partially cooked in fat which was not hot enough and as a result were springy in texture and inedible. This was fed back when the waitress collected our plates (with the potatoes still on one) and she mentioned she would report this back to the kitchen. I’m surprised that despite the neat presentation the chef had not noticed the partially cooked crispy potatoes when plating up but we never heard an explanation. The salmon was served on a bed of herb crushed potatoes with broccoli and a tomato, lemon and caper butter sauce. The fish was nicely cooked and the ingredients all went well together so I enjoyed it. For dessert my wife had the sticky date pudding served with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce whilst I had vanilla panna cotta topped with passion fruit and mango sorbet, and a mango jelly and salsa surround (both £7.50). The pudding was a little dry and my wife commented the if there had been a bit more caramel sauce she would have been happy. The panna cotta dish was very good. So there we have it, a bit of a mixed experience but generally more good than bad. By the time we added a small glass of wine and a gin & tonic (our first taste of Meldon gin from Peebles which was very good) our bill came to just under £61 which we thought was reasonable. The uncooked crispy potatoes and warm rather than hot delivery of the mains dishes detracted from an otherwise pleasant lunch. We would return at a future date if in the area.More
