A magnificent small restaurant in Melrose, with great, yet affordable wines, superb food, sourced and cooked impeccably, great staff, who create a friendly and welcoming ambiance. As we booked for very early evening, the restaurant was happy to allow us to bring our small and...well behaved Dachshund to dine with us. The restaurant is fully dog friendly during the day, but I would advise a courtesy email to them if you want to take a dog in during the evening. I had both email and telephone responses to my email, and all was well with regard to our early evening booking with our dog. The food is simple, yet incredibly well executed Scottish, British and European cuisine, with the occasional international dish included. My wife and I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world, and this is up there in both quality and of course, price. But, no additional service charges, they are absorbed in the menu and wine prices, and compared to Michelin starred restaurants, the Provender is Michelin Gourmand rated, then you will be paying half the price, for oh so close the quality of cooking, if perhaps simpler dishes. However, simpler does not mean lesser, nor does uber fancy mean better. If you are anywhere near Melrose then please try this restaurant, and I promise you that you won't regret. But, please do book well in advance, and please don't let them down on your booking, as they are not a massive enterprise, and their wonderful family restaurant relies on their bookings, because they really do cook to order, and the cooking, even of simple fries or roast potatoes, is absolutely perfect. We will most certainly be back soon.More

During our stop at lunch time we had been looking for some nice fish and chips. As we four persons were a bit on the rush, belonging to a tour group, we first asked for the time it would take. We were served immediately a...delicious fish and chips with a very good local beer. Next time we hope to have the time to order a complete menu and enjoy the great stay at provender restaurant.More

We enjoyed a great meal here, though service was a little on the slow side. This could have been because the restaurant was very busy. We had Orkney King Scallops, Dexter Beef Croquette, Tweed Valley Venison, Beer Battered Haddock, Halibut and Plum Strudel. All delicious....Staff lovely but perhaps they could have done with one or two more.More

This is one place that immediately stands head and shoulders above others. Food is of the best quality. Starters, Pumpkin with little cheese fritters. Main meal , A superb plaice main course, best we have had ever, a large on the bone piece, just cooked with...black skin and the skirt removed. Flavoured with a Catalan romesco coating, side of dressed leaves and crispy fries. Also had an unusual shredded and breadcrumbed mutton dish. Venison was perfect pink no running juices, dark reduced sauce, prunes and roasted potatoes. Hearty stuff. Nearly too much choice. Stewed apple crumble with ice cream. And a banana cheesecake which I suspect others will copy as it had a particular chefs stamp on it. How luck this town is to have such an establishment. We are guaranteed to drive this way in the not to distant future.More

This was our third visit in the last 5 or 6 years & has become a “must” whenever we visit The Borders. The cuisine is as good as any top restaurant in London or any major city but at considerably lower prices. The menu has...always been different showing the flare of a top quality Michelin star chef. Service & presentation equals the exceptional cuisine. Highly recommended.More

We had an excellent meal at this light and airy restaurant in Melrose the other evening. It was comfortable and the service was excellent throughout from all the young staff. The food was fantastic and well thought out with perfect (for us) seasoning. I had...the lemon sole served on the bone with brown butter and the best skinny fries I've ever eaten. My partner had an equally superb partridge dish which was autumnal and comforting - ideal as we are well into autumn! I also loved my triple chocolate gateau which was one of the best chocolate desserts I've had. Chocolate puddings are so easy to get wrong but this one was perfection. Add to that a couple of great cocktails - including a non-alcoholic one for me, the driver - and it all added up to a great night and good value too! If we lived nearer, we would be regulars.More

Enjoyed a great brunch here. We had the full Scottich breakfast and the Eggs Royale. Both cooked and presented perfectly. Not at all overpriced. Lovely welcoming staff. We were also delighted to see that they also welcome dogs at lunchtime. When we commented on how...this was great but still unusual in many restaurants they were genuinely surprised. If you are in Melrose please pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed.More

What a fabulous find. First visited for brunch, the service and food were of a very high standard. It therefore encouraged us to book for an evening meal. Again not at all disappointed in any way. We had a beautiful meal, followed by one desert...and I have to say one of the best I have ever encountered. ThankyouMore

We dined here on a Wednesday evening. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table, despite turning up early. The food was delicious, of particular note was the venison, which was delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening....The only thing which was slightly disappointing was that it was very hot in the restaurant, clearly not air conditioned. However, this is probably not generally needed in Scotland and it has been extremely warm of late. All in all, a great experience and we would definitely recommend.More

I wasn’t looking for this option on the menu but I think if you phone the restaurant directly they may be able to offer your party more advice. I’ve had two brilliant meals here!
