It is not necessary to repeat the accolades paid to this restaurant more to endorse them. Friendly patient and professional service with excellent taking food in a relaxed un-rushed atmosphere. Whilst not being a cheap establishment the value for money in terms of standards cannot be faulted.

My husband and I decided to cheer ourselves with a lunch, as were both recovering from bad colds. We weren't disappointed, the atmosphere was excellent, starting with drinks and nibbles, very pleasant. The starter of fish soup was lovely, although a slightly strong taste for me. My fricassee of pheasant was top notch, done in a mustard and cream sauce. The... More

We visited 1861 about six years shortly after the owners had refurbished the premises after staying in the locality for a couple of days and were very impressed then. We noticed that a deal was on offer with 'Groupon' - probably to attract customers due to it's relatively remote location? - and thought we would make the effort to travel... More

Two of us came for lunch wanting to try it again after a gap of a few years. We had been disappointed last time but wanted to give it another chance. However, we were not impressed by the food. The welcome was very warm and there is a nice lounge area for pre-meal drinks while you look at the menu.... More

This restaurant was one that we had looked to visit for a while, and reading the reviews we were looking forward to going. We visited 2-3 weeks ago as a group of friends/couples. On arrival the lounge area for drinks was nice and relaxed. However, the overall restaurant lacked atmosphere. Yes it was quiet, only another couple eating that evening,... More

We went to 1861 for the first time for my mum's birthday, and cannot praise it enough. As soon as we arrived there were sofas set up by the fireplace with snacks ready for us - and two of us can't eat gluten, so there were already gluten free nibbles there. We also had our own full menu, which you... More

A warm welcome and comfortable lounge area for pre meal drinks, accompanied by savoury nibbles. A la carte and TDH menus available. Both with attractive and varied dishes. Restaurant has a very pleasant ambience, and the tables are well arranged. Service of dishes is well timed, and food attractively presented, and taste does not disappoint. An excellent meal experience.Well worth a... More

We have eaten here several times in the past and always meant to write a review so now is the time. The food here is absolutely superb, cannot praise the level of presentation, quality and taste enough. Always warm welcome and friendly service. On this occasion we had a main, dessert, coffee and petit fours. 1861 has a good choice... More

This restaurant is located on B4521 approx seven miles from Abergevenny and should not be missed if you are in the area. The chef/owner trained at the famous Waterside inn at Bray on Thames. The food is outstanding and is worthy of a Michelin star which will surely come.Based in a wealthy area the prices are low compared to London for the... I've been to 1861 several times and have never been disappointed. Went this time with a group of friends and took advantage of the restaurant's November offer. As usual, the service was excellent - discreet yet attentive and the food, superb. We have a coeliac in our group as well as me, the awkward vegetarian - and we both got... More
