Busy Saturday night. First time in this pub which is very close to Windsor castle. Down stairs is very small , however I think there are seating area upstairs. Excellent varieties of my favourite lagers. Enjoyed our drinks. Staff are good.

Can't beat the location just outside the entrance/exit of the Castle. It was a rainy day with flurries. Orders taken at the bar were promptly returned. Fish and Chips were light and oh so delicious. The peas were steamed just right and not mushy. Most tables downstairs were taken and it was busy but not noisy. Prices were reasonable.

We have excellent lunch on a cold and windy day. Service is prompt and courteous. We only traditional pub lunch dishes - steak pie, Lemon Sole. They all served with freshly fried chips and steam vegetables. Price is reasonable given the serve size is generous. Will visit again.

Popped in for a pie and chips. Menu said it was a crusty pie, but it was soggy. I suppose they heated it up in a microwave. The chips were big an chunky and needed more time to cook, they were almost raw. I don't mind paying for good food but this was not good.

My partner and I visited recently for a mulled wine which we found to be ghastly, after we both took a sip we both found the drink undrinkable and I asked the staff behind the bar for an exchange. I was then told that I could have another drink if I paid for it, as I should know how mulled... More

This pub is wonderfully decorated and very inviting with its log fire. The service varies from good to -not-so engaging, unfortunately. Although it is truly nice and well located, the strong smell emanating from the loos should be addressed- I noticed it on frequent occasions, and it is disturbing and off putting.

Description
At some time in the sixteenth century, a small timber-framed building existed on this site. It was likely to have previously been a medieval market stall, or even a shop. Deeds from the fourteenth century show a mix of tenements, market stalls and shops in the area. The current Horse & Groom was originally known as the lower Rose & Crown. From the records at the Licensed Victuallers' Association, the first licensee was listed in 1719. It is more likely, however, that the pub was there much earlier, but no records exist to prove it. The first licensee was one Peter Tillier, who was the tenant for two years. A17th century Old Traditional pub outside the gates of Windsor castle In 1769, the lower Rose & Crown was sold to a Henry Reddington for 271 pounds and 17 shillings. When the name was changed to the Horse and Groom in 1792, the recorded licensee was Richard Knight. At this point, the property was in the ownership of one William Foster, a Windsor brewer. The mortgage of £250 at that time was made to a James Dauncey. In 1837 the pub was sold to Neville & Reid as part of the Windsor Brewery Estate.
