A friend and I went here for a "cheap and cheerful" lunch before an FA Cup tie at SJP. We were not offered it so we had to ask for the "Lunch special" menu. Having said that, we thought it was good value for £9 (for two courses) - reasonable selections of both starters and mains. I had prawn and pork dumplings (3) followed by beef with peppers in black bean sauce. A bottle of the cheapest red wine, a very acceptable, non-vintage French was £16 making our total bill, before tip, £34. Service was efficient so we were in/out in an hour. The football match which followed was less satisfactory.

The portion was quite large and the dim sum price is not too overpriced. The dining experience was nice and I enjoyed eating here. Would definitely be here next time. I was surprised there wasn't a lot of people even at 7 pm.

21/8/22 Sunday eve meal Looking at the various restaurants and their menus along the busy Chinese Street we eventually found this one with no idea of who was in it or how busy it was because it was two floors up. I checked it up Ggl and it seemed well reviewed. The prices were more reasonable than the trendy but busy restaurants nearby. We took a chance and went up the lift at 20:43, finding a sparsely populated large restaurant with mostly English diners, only a free Chinese. We were shown a table near the far end by the performance area (with a 'throne'?). We were presented with the menus (dim sum menus were on the table already) and a plastic basket of prawn crackers were delivered. We chose our dishes, being pescatarians, and waited...... I looked up the restaurant on TA and found mostly good reviews. The junior staff were busy spraying tables, and laying them but no sign of anytime coming for anyone to take poor order. By 9.05 the older senior gentleman came over and said we had better be quick as the kitchens were closing. We had just twiddled our thumbs for 15 minutes trying to catch the waiters'/waitresses' eyes as they busied themselves. We should have just left but it was late. We ordered a basic variety of vegetarian and seafood dishes and a pot of tea as the drinks were quite pricey. We finished by 9:43 and the plates were taken away by the boss, carefully stacked so they 'locked' he said. The waitress arrived with the bill quickly (without our asking) that was a printed £40.10. We were by then the last people in the restaurant bar a couple who were there before us. We left into the street where other restaurants were still busy and people looked happy, probably spending much more though. Overall a bit of an underwhelming, underspiced experience with a bit of stress regarding having to be quick.

1st and last visit! I wish we had read reviews prior to our visit. Some things not available yet not advised when we sat down so we had to pick alternatives. Appeared to be more than one menu but not every table were given all menus, we certainly werent. The food that arrived at the table was awful, possibly the worst chinese we have had. 1 item was completely the wrong thing. Ribs were wafer thin slices in a luke warm sauce, steamed dumplings swimming in water, buns had exploded and were stuck to paper and the fried dumplings stodgy. Some of our meal never arrived. I just wish id taken photos. Not one person asked us if everything was ok or if we needed more drinks. We asked for the bill to see we had been charged for what didnt arrive, the item we had been given incorrectly, along with drinks we didnt order. When we questioned the bill we were asked are you sure because if definitely left the kitchen, we were made to feel like liars. You could see from the dishes left on the table we never received them yet it took 4 different people to sort. No apology at all. When we had paid for both the terrible food and service the manager who didnt want to help with the bill came over and eventually apologised blaming their new system and a transition period. The biggest waste of money ever as we left just as hungry as when we went in.

Worst service. I placed an order for soups and I was told we are very busy and asked to place main course and starters too. I mentioned I will order at my convenience kindly serve me soups for now. Then staff started giving unnecessary explanations that we can’t guarantee how much time it’s going to take. But thankfully after 25 minutes one female staff got my soup. By this point I made up mind that it’s not a place for me as I could see adjacent table who came exactly at my time being served starters for which I was told they are half cooked or near ready so fast to serve but not a case with soups. Also, when I asked to pay o was told they can’t take card payment below £10 which I have never seen at restaurants. Overall it was a bad experience. I don’t want to be judgemental because of my experience but hot and sour soup was not great.

Arrived and ordered drinks and banquet for 2 people, drinks arrived after about 10 minutes, we then sat for over an hour before any food arrived. Despite asking two different waiting staff we were totally ignored. All courses of the banquet then arrived at once and were dumped on the table without any apology or care. We still had to remind them we hadn’t had the shredded duck course and got that at the end! Food was delicious when it finally arrive but main course was cold because it had all arrived at once. Several tables arrived, ate and left before we got any food. Very disappointing.

After living in Newcastle for almost 20 years I have never tried this place until today. I was a bit unsure at first as we walked up the 2 lots of stairs but when we got up to the restaurant the smells were amazing. Myself and my husband tried the lunch special which was a soup an apertiser and a main course for £12.50 which is great value. The food was red hot and tasted lovely. There were many Chinese people eating in the restaurant which is ways a good sign. I would return here again. If you want a posh quiet restaurant this maybe isn't for you but if you want nice food and reasonably priced this would be for you so give it a go.

Update on review completed Jan 2017. We visited Sky Restaurant tonight due to fond memories we had before we moved away. Came back to visit family after two year (Covid has a lot to answer for!). We used to visit Sky R every Sunday for dim sum plus. Tonight's visit was a disaster - badly "cooked" food, lacked taste appropriate for the dish and terrible presentation. The cook and manager didn't care that we should enjoy the food, that we prefer prawns to be cooked not semi-raw. We ordered Mix Seafood with vegetables and the special fried noodles. The Seafood dish arrived only lukewarm and the two King Prawns looked rather raw so we asked that it be cooked a bit more. It came back with the food tipped over the two prawns and not cooked a bit more as requested. In fact the whole dish was less than lukewarm, almost cold to the touch. As for the noodles, it consisted of about 4 small pieces of chicken, 5 pieces of roast pork and 2 King prawns (at least these were cooked through). The noodles were thin and parts of it were burnt and I seemed to have crunched into a small piece of burnt garlic - at least I hope it was garlic and not something else. Hmm very special indeed.

Since the advent of Covid I've not been out much being of the original "stay at home or you will die" crowd. However, in the last a few months or so I've been out more and more, and one of the places I've visited a few times is Sky. Sky has always been sort of middle of the road when it comes to quality of food, as in, you know you're going to get decent food, just not the best. However, it is now a very mixed bag. I've been a couple of times in the last month of so and it has been fairly decent. Dim Sum are huge in size (I'm looking at you Siu Mai), and portion size of dishes are plentiful - they really pack in the noodles and rice, but they come at a price, particularly the Dim Sum, these are eye watering prices. However, the last time I was there, for lunch, it was pretty woeful. The Dim Sum was not well steamed with the casing of things like Haa Gau being oddly chewy. The meats in Sam Siu were tough and gristly, and were bland to a fault. Also, staff had to be asked on multiple occasions to bring our drinks - it wasn't even busy at lunch! Friends of mine feel the same, it's very "hit and miss", which is a shame, as considering the price you pay it should be a "hit" every time.

Eaten at many Chinese restaurants in Newcastle and this has to be by far the best.We hadn’t booked a table and were seen to straight away. We chose the set meal for 4 the food was absolutely amazing so tasty and beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly especially the owner who made sure the meals were on a continuous roll no waiting about for the next courses. I will most definitely be visiting this restaurant again and will make sure I inform my family and friends 💜

After perusing the menu for some time (staff seemed to ignore us for a longish time) we eventually ignored the set menu and plumped for a mix of dim sum Only the ribs in a very meek ie.flavorless sauce was not enjoyed I think this was because the ribs were mainly fat and bone I knawed.away at them because I was hungry ,my effort was not really rewarded . My favorite dim sum was the dumplings.with pork and chives....the chives really improve any of the dumplings another nice one had a boiled quails egg in it my partner.and I both enjoyed them despite the waiting time I did not like the tea I was.served I had asked for chrysanthemum tea what I got looked like camomile but tasted bitter mystery tea. Service.when it eventually came was fine The restaurant itself has seen better days and reminded me of the earliest Chinese restaurants that were a feature of every town back in the sixties ,I did enjoy the views on the second story restaurant so if you have problems with your legs take the lift you will see at the bottom floor outside ,button right at lift door you need to know this as there is several buttons

Me and my boyfriend went to Sky Chinese Cuisine on Saturday afternoon and it was absolutely lovely! Service from staff was spot on and were really friendly, always happy to help. It was our first visit to the restaurant and what a delight it was. The location is great, right in the middle of China Town in Newcastle. The staff were welcoming, informative and altogether polite. Food tasted nice and was served in decent sized portions. The fresh Dim Sum was unreal and 100% the best I've tried. The tables within the restaurant were well spaced with room for the meal to be presented without having to move drinks glasses or cutlery. The two things I would mention, the drinks are a little too expensive and the building is slightly dated and requires a lot on improvement. Other than that, I came for the food which I would rate 8/10. We will definitely be returning! Excellent.... thank you.

Mains arrived without rice and were cold . So said please forget mains as so put off . So manger wanted still to charge us for such a bad experience £18 for 2 starters and £31.90 in total we had one glass of wine and a pint of lime and soda I was so upset and disgusted and said would not be paying that so charged £20 and I think that insulting so would t be back
