It's a nicely lit and atmospheric environment, the server Saf is really friendly and informative of the menu. The food is authentic and delicious, I highly recommend to anyone who loves Indian food! I got a complimentary drink too!

The staff A.J., S.A.J. & MABS did a fantastic job of looking after us on our visit on 21 May 2024. They were helpful assisting us with our drinks choice, a pear cider, a glass of red wine and a Kingfisher beer. Excellent food, the five of us shared the dishes and all were great. They included Papadom (the best I have ever had), pickle tray, chicken tikka, Narikel Mach Spice, Shabzi Massala, vegetable biryani and sides Bombay Aloo rice and bread, naan bread, pilau rice The dishes were good value. Would recommend Bengal Brasserie to diners looking for an Indian meal.

What can we say. WOW!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!! We are curry conisuers we love curry and every we go we try a recommend curry house. This has been a family business for over 40 years .To start a very warm and friendly welcome from Saf. He exceeded in customer service we told him what we like and he recommend a scotch bonnet naga curry we chose lamb as he said it will melt in your mouth and it it did , prices are very reasonabletoo.. If u love curry u must visit when in curry booking is highly recommended. It was very busy. Thankyou team . All the best. Carl and Amanda Gibson ❤️

Awful meal

Have never written a review like this before.Came here after reading the reviews and also a recommendation. We were the first in on a fri night at 6pm. My wife went to the ladies and she came back and said it was dirty so we should have left then. Wait staff were lovely and we had poppadoms and chutney tray. The poppadoms did not seem fresh but was OK. For starters we had a very average prawn puri with lots of water in the prawns and little flavour. The Onion bhaji was the highlight of the meal. My wife wanted to leave however I said let's give the mains a go which was a big mistake. Had a tandoori butter chicken and I asked if it could be a bit spicy and they said they would make it "medium". It was like a chicken in creamy sauce with no spice . I honestly thought it was a children's curry they would give to a 3 year old. She ordered a chicken shashlik. It wasn't even sizzling when it came out and was grey. Am used to it being brown or red with black tinges as if it have been barbecued. She didn't eat a thing. I tried both and was so disappointed. I should have sent them back but she just wanted to leave which we did.

We came to this restaurant 2 yrs ago and it was lovely, we recently visited York and came to this restaurant for the evening on our first night and it was again lovely. We booked for the Saturday evening and it was like we were at different restaurant sadly, everything was oily creasy and heavily coloured leaving it tasteless. My husbands was extremely oily he felt very bloated, ours sons lamb was tough and chewy, mine was a chicken rogan Josh that was extremely runny and bright red with no taste whatsoever I couldn’t eat it at all and I felt very embarrassed to have to say to a waiter how terrible it was he said he would get the manager that never came to us just another waiter that brought the bill. It was delt with very poorly we never saw the manager and had £10 knocked off our bill. Sadly we will never return here again totally upset us and spoilt out last meal in York.

Treat on last night

Came to the York restaurant tonight for a curry. We were told it was great but sadly it fell short. The staff were very full on and nice and were informative about the dishes but we feel it was more a front that washed over the quality of food here. There was a mountain of food but it was greasy and lukewarm and had a very claggy taste and left a nasty feeling and coating in my mouth. There was so much onion and pepper but not much prawn or chicken as promised. We were charged for more beers too which luckily we saw on the final bill. I think they have over the years catered for the local community but it doesn't reflect the true value of their cuisine. Maybe I'm wrong, I just know that it wasn't of a good standard tonight for us anyway. We have had so much better

Welcoming Staff and Delicious Food

We ate here last night after requesting a table the same day via the website - we received an email confirming that our booking was accepted within a few hours. Met with friendly staff who were enthusiastic about their dishes and really keen to provide a good experience. Food was delicious, piping hot, and clearly freshly made. Thanks for a great meal!

Watch out for the service charge!

I hadn't intended to eat here, and was on my way to a recommended restaurant elsewhere in the city. Passing by, I checked out the menu in the window and took a chance. I was rewarded with mediocre food and service, and a wait of 15 minutes for the bill - a pet hate of mine. When the bill finally arrived, it included a 10% service charge. When I challenged this, I was told that this charge was clearly mentioned on their website and menu (it isn't!) I have no issue with leaving a generous tip when warranted (usually when the bill is presented in a timely manner and I can crack on with my night) but this felt like extortion. I was told that the charge couldn't be waived, despite my polite protestations. I feel sure that this restaurant are ripping off many patrons who don't even read their bill and would advise finding somewhere better. The Yak and Yeti, just down the road, have much better food and a more honest way of dealing with their patrons. #justsaying

Great food and experience

Excellent food and service throughout from Saf and Jitu. They made us totally at home and were great hosts. Wonderful fresh food, nice and hot when it arrived - especially the sizzling starter. Curry’s were packed full of flavour and the naan’s were full of filling. Will definitely be back.

A very pleasant surprise!

What a fabulous little place in the centre of York. The menu was so different to any other I have seen and I was very impressed! We were served mainly by Saf who was a little gem and so happy and friendly! The service was excellent, the portions were very generous and the food was delicious. Two of our party of ten had birthdays so they brought out ice cream desserts for them and liquers for all ten of us. Thank you for a lovely experience and you have a little gem in Saf!

Excellent restaurant

This is a wonderful restaurant. The menu is extensive and interesting. Choosing what to have was difficult, too many dishes we wanted to taste, but our food was so delicious. Large portion meant I couldn't finish but it meant I had some left over to enjoy the next day too. Customer service here is amazing, especially from the bearded guy ( sorry, forgotten your name) who made us feel so welcome and special. He was lovely. And he gave us a complimentary drink after our meal. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. Just a shame we don't live closer!

Lovely Indian restaurant in the centre of York

Nice restaurant, great service and good food. We dined on a Thursday evening early in October. We hadn’t bother booking as we were dining early (just after 6pm) so assumed it would be quiet. It was already busy when we arrived and it soon filled up so booking would be a good idea in future which can be done easily online. The food and service were excellent. Saf our waiter was particularly helpful and attentive but all the staff were friendly. We were offered a complimentary drink with the bill which was much appreciated. We will definitely visit next time we’re in York.

Great food great service

Beautiful food here we really enjoyed it. Excellent service from Saf, Jay and Ekon who did all they could to make it a great experience by explaining unfamiliar dishes and giving attentive service. There is a bit of a wait for dishes but that is because they are cooked from scratch and some meats were brought to the table still sizzling in the pan they had been cooked in then decanted to plates. It was worth the time. It was our first visit but we will definitely go again.

Great service and superb food at this friendly and vibrant Indian. Our waiter Ekon was attentive and polite and explained dishes that would suit our tastes. All in all we had great food, wine and all under £75.00 for two. Book in advance 👍

Our family really enjoyed our meal here - tasty, good portions, and spice levels adjusted to a variety of palates. The staff were excellent and made a birthday celebration extra special. AJ and Mabz were accommodating and friendly. We'd definitely come here again.
