Tremendous greetings and service. Great atmosphere and environment. Food just awesome. Our only issue was the grilled Eel portion was large for us, which, when we left some, led to consternation from staff that we had not enjoyed the food....quite the opposite. I also had 8 pieces of vegetable sushi - what a delight, the tastes and the artistry -... More

What to say? This restaurant might very well be the best Japanese restaurant we've ever visited. And what's so funny is that it's so easy to miss, and their website tells you hardly anything. But that's exactly the trick. They don't need to shout... Everything is correct. From the moment you enter the restaurant until you leave and don't have... More

Umu never fails to deliver. Top notch food and knowledgeable wine pairings. Inventive with combining exquisite flavours.

My husband's surprise for my birthday a couple of months ago. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant. We were seated opposite the chefs and watching the attention to detail applied to creating the tasty morsels was mesmerising. My husband is not a fan of Japanese food but by the time we left he had been converted. The... More

We booked it for a birthday, and expected 2 star Michelin experience. We where seated by the door, so every time the door opens you receive a cold air from the street on your back, that was not pleasant at all. The food is prepared from very fresh ingredients, that is very easy to realise, so the plates are fresh... More

I have just had my third dinner at Umu. High expectations as I invited two business partners as well as my son and my daughter. Obviously, I had spoken highly about the food. Ths food part kept the promise of one of London's Japanase finest. The service was disappointing. The 5 of us have been assigned to a rectangualar table... More

A two Michelin star Japanese restaurant in the heart of London. The restaurant is located in a tiny ally with concealed entrance that may confuse you. Charming and authentic decor. Professional and friendly service. Food is definitely fresh. We went for the a la carte. Most of the dishes were tasty and delicious. However, there was no wow factor. The... More

This is the second time we had dinner at Umu, and as most second parts, it was slightly disappointing. Food was nice but at £200 per person I wouldn't have expected anything less. The service was average, especially when it came to drinks, we continuously had to ask for more water and wine despite having ordered a bottle of each.

What can you say about the best Japanese food you've ever eaten?! Well, I will try. I went with two friends to celebrate life, to Umu in Mayfair. From the time we arrived at the discreet wooden entrance door till we left everything was classy, discreet and perfect! We had tempura, sea urchin, sashimi, sushi and a chocolate dessert. It... I hadn't been at Umu for several years and had the opportunity to dine there during a business trip. I had good memories of lunches at Umu, and my dinner confirmed these memories. The attention is given to every details. From the very discreet entrance, where one has to put his hand on a pane to open the "wall" and... More

Staying in Mayfair

Neighbourhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
