I have just had my third dinner at Umu. High expectations as I invited two business partners as well as my son and my daughter. Obviously, I had spoken highly about the food. Ths food part kept the promise of one of London's Japanase finest. The service was disappointing. The 5 of us have been assigned to a rectangualar table... More

A two Michelin star Japanese restaurant in the heart of London. The restaurant is located in a tiny ally with concealed entrance that may confuse you. Charming and authentic decor. Professional and friendly service. Food is definitely fresh. We went for the a la carte. Most of the dishes were tasty and delicious. However, there was no wow factor. The... More

This is the second time we had dinner at Umu, and as most second parts, it was slightly disappointing. Food was nice but at £200 per person I wouldn't have expected anything less. The service was average, especially when it came to drinks, we continuously had to ask for more water and wine despite having ordered a bottle of each.

What can you say about the best Japanese food you've ever eaten?! Well, I will try. I went with two friends to celebrate life, to Umu in Mayfair. From the time we arrived at the discreet wooden entrance door till we left everything was classy, discreet and perfect! We had tempura, sea urchin, sashimi, sushi and a chocolate dessert. It... I hadn't been at Umu for several years and had the opportunity to dine there during a business trip. I had good memories of lunches at Umu, and my dinner confirmed these memories. The attention is given to every details. From the very discreet entrance, where one has to put his hand on a pane to open the "wall" and... More

I had an amazing dinner yesterday. We had the wine tasting menu. From the starter to the dessert , it was incredible explosion of flavours. The sashimi was excellent, but my favourite dish was the tuna tartare with caviar immersed in jelly. The wine and sake selection is very good. If you don't care about an exhorbitant bill, but want... Stay clear of this massively over priced, pretentious rip off. Wine is hugely expensive and nothing special. Food is tiny and prices huge. I dine in London a lot and this is appalling. They don't even take American Express.......... There are nearly as many staff as diners. So they have to cover the costs somehow. Lots better elsewhere. Try Novikov... More

Hard to find but once inside you are transported to a local sushi restaurant in Japan. The ambience is business like but not uncomfortable if you're there for pleasure. The service is spot on and very efficient. It's nice to see that good service doesn't require an attitude. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable with the menu. The food... More

2 Michelin star Japanese restaurant. The first challenge is finding the restaurant through its sliding concealed entrance. Once you're in though the restaurant is great. The chefs prepared wonderful sushi for us. One of our party prefers the Sashimi served on ice but the delicate flavours of the more unusual fish like Gurnard are enhanced by being served chilled rather... More

To be completely honest - it was excellent but somehow I expected just a tad more "wow". I am aware that Japanese food has a simplicity, but I am also aware that it can wow you also. But perhaps I should have gone for the fine dining menu. Anyhow, its still wonderful food.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighbourhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
