The National Gallery's restaurant seems to have kept up standards despite the change of francise. Service was a little slow but my ham hock scotch egg was tasty and filling though billed as a starter.

The bill of fare offers traditional British dishes - fish & chips; ribeye steak - and, for the adventurous, a knickerbocker glory is available on the dessert menu. The food usually is freshly prepared, tasty, and well presented. The service is truly exceptional . . . the staff are good humoured, attentive, and respond swiftly to customer queries ir concerns.

In for a three course meal, I had been attracted by an interesting menu and rainy day. The service is professional and courteous, the interior simple yet modern and very spacious. I had three scallops for a starter followed by fried Dover sole. The meals were okay but unimaginative. The above plus a glass of wine, glass of water and... More

The cafe in the Sainsbury wing is a good size space and offers beverages, cakes and meals. A comfortable place to sit after spending time wandering through the art galleries.

We had a cappuchino before going to the exhibition. For £3.00 it was half a small cup of coffee and the rest was foam

I meet friends here every week and the best thing about this place is that it is spacious so we never feel pressured into leaving the table as soon as we have finished our drinks/food.

As soon as you nurish your brain and eyes with masterpieces at National gallery, then you need to feed the stomach too. Its a good occasion to do that in the Sainsbury wing, nice atmosphere, fish and spinach or hamburger is good. Sometimes due to the numerosus clients, the service is a bit slow or you have to wait to... More

Also confusingly a Peyton & Byrne but branded as the national dining rooms, there is a warm welcome at lunchtime where you can choose counter service or a la carte. I went for counter service, unfortunately only one till and a slight queue at 12.45 so it could well be bedlam at later times or in peak season. The food... More

I needed to rest my knee and really wanted a drink... not only did they drum up a mixologist, he created divine drinks and nibbles. The background music is wrong and the decor a bit soulless... but the staff were friendly and helpful. Go to support them and get a delicious drink to support yourself!

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighbourhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
