About
Welcome to a corner of the French Mediterranean. Set between London's legendary St James and Leicester Square, Soho, Whitcomb's serves modern interpretations of classic dishes found along the sunny stretches of the French and Italian rivieras. Simple yet elegant cuisine, prepared à la minute. Whitcomb's works closely with suppliers to secure the finest produce, including sourcing meat from family butchers Aldens, fish from James Knight, and vegetables from Le Marché. Provenance is the restaurant's leading star, and its sommeliers were equally judicious when selecting their wines. While there are bottles from all over the world, special attention has been paid to represent the incredible terroirs of France, with some especially notable vintages from Bordeaux. The restaurant has lots of natural light and features fantastic art to accentuate the dining experience.

Booked a Christmas reunion lunch with some former colleagues here last Monday and it was really good. So good in fact I feel churlish about my one mark down at the end of the review as it is outweighed by all the positives.
First the ambience. The restaurant is in the Londoner Hotel right in the middle of the West End and the waiting area outside with a real flame fire was very welcome on a cold day. The staff were charming and attentive without being obsequious and our waitress from Colombia coped with our idiosyncrasies as a group with real grace and good humour and made some great recommendations including the best non-alcoholic cocktail I have had in a long time. Their wine expert's own Vin Rouge is really good as was the excellent bottle of alcoholic red which followed.
The set menu was excellent value including a starter. main and side dish and dessert including one of their signature dishes of what I can only describe as a deconstructed crispy mille feuille which was totally delicious. The pasta is all made on site and my agnolotti was superb and the sauce the as buttery as it could get without being cloying.
If we had called it a day after dessert I would have had no gripes at all but we did have coffee afterwards and though the cappuccino was fine the price of well over £5.00 for a modest sized cup did put the bill up above the very reasonable price it would otherwise have been for all of us. But perhaps I have been out of the West End for too long a time to realise how high prices have risen generally. Would I return anyway? For sure - it's a really super place to eat in the heart of theatreland.

Last night we ate at Whitcomb's in the posh Londoner Hotel on Leicester Square. We had planned to attend Christmas Eve, but because of illness were unable to do so. Since we had paid in advance for the holiday dinner (a usual practice in Europe) we had a credit on our account and the reservation was moved to last night. I could go into detail, but suffice it to say, that we were treated like celebrities! From the moment of our arrival until the end of the evening it was, in a word, Perfect. The service and attention was outstanding. We were gifted a complimentary bottle of champagne. We dined on escargot, prawns, Lobster Thermador and Grilled Dover Sole. We were advised to share, but each portion is sufficient individually, and the Sole was enough for three people. All the dishes were perfectly cooked to the perfect "pointe" for fish and seafood. Not a rubbery snail in sight. I give this restaurant the highest marks for service, attention and cooking. The prices for London are in line with good restaurants, but not as high as the Michelin rated ones. The one problem is that the room is all "hard surfaces", no carpet, no table cloths, which does make it quite noisy as the evening progressed. I would suggest that this be corrected and then the evening would be completely Perfect.

I enjoyed lunch here with 4 of my old university friends. From the moment I approached the entrance to the time we left we couldn't have enjoyed better service. The doorman not only opened the door but also guided me to the restaurant. One of our party was delayed and the restaurant readily adjusted our booking giving us time to enjoy one of their extensive range of gin and tonics.
The hotel bar is beautiful and the staff super knowledgeable about what they can offer; no mean feat given the range.
Once inside the restaurant it is a light, airy and modern space. The staff appear from nowhere, providing that perfect balance of service without being overly present.
The food was all delicious, being 5 meant we sample a wide range of the sharing plates an a couple of the primi. Everyone of them combined the familiar with a twist, burrata with honey and orange was one delight as we're the snails with n'duja. In fact every plate went back clean.
My Dover sole was beautiful cooked and the fries were a revelation.
The desserts were also beautifully presented and delicious. The lemon tart being a personal favourite.
Altogether an excellent place to eat, in a great location. We'll be back!

Dear scott156,
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your recent visit at Whitcomb's.
Here at Whitcomb's we believe in perfection and good time. In order to achieve that our team works tirelessly to provide highest standards of service and that being combined with sublime food and great ambience it is most certainly a perfect recipe for success.
Our dishes are designed around all time classics with a bit of Whitcomb's touch to enhance their flavour and ensure guest satisfaction, the dover sole being exactly the perfect example. Furthermore, what makes a meal great if not a world class dessert, we cannot agree more that the Tart au citron is that indeed.
We very much appreciate the kind words in regards to your experience and service and cannot wait to welcome you again.
Best regards,

Directionless and chaotic, though fine dining it is assuredly not, rather another "sharing concept" with a thumping music track loud enough to make conversation difficult but not loud enough to drown out the conversation of those on the next table, with whom you will be on first name terms by the end of the evening thanks to the 'sardines' style layout.
The waiter started things badly by explaining that the arrival of anything ordered for any course could occur randomly, leaving you wondering if your tuna tartare might be accompanied by a side order of hot mushrooms sizzling on the skillet, or perhaps rigatoni pasta with a side order of chips?
In the end 'the table' did get to spend a period of time 'sharing' just mushrooms and green beans, which slowly congealed before the arrival of anything suitable for them to accompany. Sharing concepts can work fine with the right menu and a kitchen able to apply a degree of common sense, but it doesn't work here. Not even mentioned on the website or when booking, we would have preferred to know in advance.
The yellowtail carpaccio was served swamped in a huge mound of bitter lemon zest, (white bits included), with no other seasoning or flavours apparent....poor fish. Really, why bother to bring lemons from the Côte d’Azur if you are going to treat them this badly. They did obligingly take these off the bill but it is puzzling that this dish managed to make it out of the kitchen in the first place.
A funsize tuna tartare followed, just two bites big! Technically shareable, but they could have helped maybe by providing tweezers.
The baby chicken was heavily paprika'd, but without any balancing seasoning, and so pretty unpleasant to eat being bland and over-spiced all at once, unlike the green beans which seem to have been cooked in salt, served with a salt garnish and finished with a salt frosting. To paraphrase Eric Morecambe, they used all the right seasoning, but not necessarily on the right dishes.
The good points:
Not been open for long, maybe we caught them on a really, really bad night.
The sommeliers were great, very competent and kept us in a reasonably good humour throughout this culinary onslaught against all the odds.
Chips were not exactly chips, but tasted very good.
Tarte tatin and the sauces that came with the beignets were great.
We are experienced diners to say the least, but found it impossible to carve a good dining experience out of this set up. It was pretty full on the night, but there is too much good competition around for it to stay that way long term without some profound improvements. Maybe it will limp along ok with resident diners, as it is in a hotel, but seems like an opportunity lost for such a good central location.

Dear Robert L.
Thank you taking the time to review Whitcomb's.
It is extremely disappointing to read about your recent experience and we apologise that we have failed to deliver our usual standard on this occasion. We do spend a lot of time in providing training to our staff, in order for them to be a valuable assistance to our guests and guide them through their dinning experience.
In regards of the food, as you have mentioned we did replace the dish which was not up to your liking with something more desirable and during our quality checks nothing was mentioned in terms of size and quality of the dishes,
Please feel free to contact me directly on mario.yordanov@thelondoner.com as I would like to discuss your experience further and ensure that it will not reoccur.

At this price point/segment, there is a big disconnect between value for money.
The food was fairly basic, fish overcooked, prawns lacked character/flavour. The waiting time between courses was 45min to 1h for a 5 course menu.
The restaurant decor was nice but overall experience was disappointing, I won't go back.

Six of us visited on a pre-booked Saturday night to celebrate a big wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy though perhaps not completely full. The setting was beautiful, great atmosphere, there was a singer in the large bar area, an open fire (gas) and we were ushered to our table by a friendly waiter. We sat down around 8.00pm and ordered drinks.
We had three courses off the a la carte menu Without going into detail the food was good, if unexceptional. The filet mignon was a little chewy and served very rare we were not asked how we wanted it. Some of the side dishes came separately and late, when some of us had nearly finished . We did wonder if some of the food may have been sitting around after preparation, before delivery to the table .
All the staff were friendly and the sommelier was knowledgeable and helpful. However they seemed very busy which led to delays in service. The meal took 4 hours which was too long so we did not finish until midnight.
The toilets were rather a long walk, but worth it when you arrived being clean, hygienic and very high tech. They were also unisex.
On balance we had a very enjoyable night but it was expensive, It was part of the relatively new five star Londoner Hotel, and perhaps still settling in, but we did not get five star service and some Improvement is needed with the food. Thus three stars here, but nonetheless a good experience and we hope to return .

Great location and lovely decor made for a nice welcome. A very attentive server and a good choice on the menu. The starters were really nice but the lobster mains were outstanding and both cooked beautifully.
We had opted for the Fork meal deal which offered 50% off the food bill during set times. This was a great deal and made the whole meal very good value for the quality of food, ambience and service we received. Our review may have been different had we not had this deal.

French restaurant in very trendy and extremely expensive hotel on Leicester Square. Friendly and helpful waiter. Good menu with some tasty food however for people with deep pockets only. We had burrata as a starter and when it arrived on its own we asked for some bread to go with it and were given a small baguette. When the bill came it was an extra £5 and 15% service charge. I also had a tomato juice with Worcestershire sauce - it had an odd fishy flavour so I asked them to check the date on the bottle. I didn't drink it and was asked if I wanted something else. When the bill came again I was charged £5.25 and 15% service charge! Deep pockets indeed. Good food but disappointing prices.

We didn't know anything about Whitcomb's and were looking for somewhere nice to eat that wasn't the usual tourist catered restaurant in/around Leicester Square. We had just come from the theatre and hadn't booked anywhere and just happened to walk past and saw how nice it looked through the windows so we turned around and walked into the hotel (newly opened, don't remember the name but plush and modern) and walked up to the hostess looking to be seated.
The quality of service started with her. She was engaging and so pleasent and her service was as good as any maitre D and had to leave her a little tip on our our way out.ti say thank you. Our waitress and all the other wait staff all were exceptional too, so much so that my friend left an extra big tip on top of the built in service charge. I have been to a lot of fine restaurants around the globe eating at places that have a two month waiting list (yes some of the best food I have ever eaten in my life) and you expect good service when you eat at places like these. Though at Whitby's last night all the staff were warm and engaged in conversation especially when I was sitting by myself checking on me. They added to the already inviting ambiance and experience.
And then there was the food. For me personally the meal has been added to my top 5 most delicious meals I have eaten. I tried my friends dish, it was delicious, but mine....wow. She doesn't even like seabass but tried mine and was also wowwed. A simple but exquisite dish of seabass with garlic green beans as my side. Cooked to perfection with flavours you couldn't help but devour. I can't wait to come again.
I applaud the chef. I applaud the staff. The food was most excellent and the staff made the experience so much more.

Whitcomb’s is the restaurant in the iconic Londoner Hotel in the south-western corner of Leicester Square. It’s been described as an iceberg because it has almost as many floors below ground as above it. Whitcomb’s is named after the street it runs alongside but access is not from the street but by turning right on entering the stunning lobby of the hotel itself rather than continuing into the vast bar and lounge area. The restaurant is on two levels each with a miscellany of art ranging from an entertaining row of caricatures of hat wearing women to the large absurd sculptural blobs in a box behind our table. An air of style and sophistication was completely ruined by the volume of the background ‘musack’ with an insistent and irritating beat more suited to a sweaty disco or a bowling alley. Fortunately the food was quite superb. It is fine dining which would not be out of place on the Titanic. It’s a Mediterranean menu situated somewhere between France and Italy (a large range of pastas available for example) where sharing is actively encouraged. For us starters of a creamy burrata on a bed of sliced oranges and honey was quickly followed by a bowl of the crispiest bread coated calamari then a cheese fondue flecked with strips of parma ham. A poussin was carved for my daughter but had a little too much paprika for her taste although she consumed nearly all of our two portion of ‘frites’ resembling giant fingers. But she enjoyed perhaps the best of our three dishes a glorious filleted sea bass in a creamy sauce. I rather monopolised three fillet mignon steaks with chanterelle mushrooms in a gloriously rich gravy. A bowl of kale proved a suitable accompaniment to each dish. A lemon tart and an extraordinary chocolate pot infused with rum decorated with a gold leaf with added chocolates in its lid rounded off a memorable meal. There is a rarified wine list at rarified prices. The choice of two small bottles of beer is execrable. Service veered from the polite to the frankly overwhelming. However I enjoyed a short conversation with a mostached manager asking him what it was like to work in an iceberg serving food fit for the Titanic. He replied that a newspaper describing the hotel as an iceberg was somewhat unfortunate especially given the fate of the Titanic. But he quipped ‘I suppose the iceberg won.’ Which it has here with aplomb.

My friend booked us a table during the soft opening, I enjoyed it so much I booked to return the next day with my wife.
Some restaurants in hotels can seem cold. This doesn’t. It’s well decorated and has a great atmosphere. All of the staff I encountered on both days were superb, friendly, efficient and knowledgable.
They recommended a sharing style of ordering which worked very well. My highlights for starters was the prawns and the 4 cheese dish.
We then shared the Lobster Rigatoni as a mid course. This was so good that I had it both nights. On both nights I also ordered the Fillet Mignon, served in a wonderful gravy and cooked to perfection. We had the unusual stripped chips, which were perfect for soaking up the gravy.
The Muscadet could have been served slightly more chilled. Both reds that the Sommelier recommended in both nights were excellent. The cocktails are good as well.
On both nights I finished with a couple of drinks in the lobby bar, one of the best hotel bars I’ve been in. Fabulously decorated, great service and with a fantastic singer/piano player.

Went to Whitcomb's with my partner for our 2nd Anniversary and from the moment we arrived we were cared for so well by all the staff. We were given recommendations when needed and were addressed extremely politely! The food was completely different from anything I've ever experienced. I started with an arrivée cocktail which was slightly sweet but very light, I had the tarte au fromage as a petites assietes which was extremely delicate and delicious! My partner and I both had the filet mignon for mains and it was like nothing I've ever tasted before, so incredible, we had that with the frites which were also amazing! We weren't going to have dessert but after dinner we were presented with the most amazing small dessert as a gift as it was our anniversary which was so unexpected it almost made me cry as it was so sweet of them to do for us! The staff congratulated us on our anniversary a lot which made the night feel even more special. Its definitely a night my partner and I will never forget!

Dear Peachynetic,
It gives us great pleasure to read such a wonderful review!
Here at Whitcomb's we take great pride in the products we use for our dishes, and we are very pleased that you have noticed it as well. Our mixologists and chefs have spent long days curating the menu, in order to take our guests on a journey through the debris of the French Mediterranean and indulge with simple yet sophisticated flavours and dishes cooked to perfection, the Fillet mignon being one of them.
We work very hard towards turning our guest's celebrations into an unforgettable memory and the team is thrilled to read that they have succeeded on this occasion.
It most definitely be our pleasure to welcome you again through the door of our restaurant.

I went to Whitcombs for dinner for the 1st time on 14th December and the food was excellent. My guest had a starter of deep fried squid with truffles which was excellent and I had beef carpacia with truffles that melted in the mouth .Then she had Lobster thermidore as a main with fantastic flavours and excellent side plates of potato and kale. I had a wonderfully large portion of Fillet Mignon with Chanterelle. Again fantastic. Desserts were also excellent. Definitely going back.

Difficult to understand the positive reviews for this place. The food was distinctly underwhelming - small portions and very ordinary ingredients. I left hungry. However the worst aspect was the service which, though friendly, was hopelessly incompetent (15% surcharge notwithstanding). For example, we were asked to order desserts immediately, together with our starters and mainsz and the server was surprised when I asked if we could order them later instead. We then had to order them before our mains were cleared away. Drinks took ages to arrive, sparkling water was brought instead of still (both at £6.30 with service), the wine list is only an approximation of what is actually available, and the wine was served much too warm. All small issues in themselves but there was a general strong impression that the staff simply had no idea what they were doing, which made the while experience much less enjoyable and relaxing than it should have been. We regularly eat in leading London restaurants and sadly this one gets things badly wrong. We will certainly not return.

Myself and my friend recently stayed at The Londoner so we decided to book into Whitcomb’s as it is situated in the hotel. The night we visited the restaurant was not too busy. It is situated in a boutique hotel, so the atmosphere is quite dark, but intimate. We received excellent service from our waitress Maria, she answered all our questions in detail with regards to the menu. It is a European restaurant, so I opted for escargot and for main I chose lobster thermidor, both delicious. I didn’t want dessert but as it was my birthday, the restaurant brought out a chocolate dessert, equally delicious and a nice touch.
The restaurant also serves breakfast to the hotel guests. Part buffet and al le carte. The restaurant was empty when we arrived. We opted for eggs benedict and I had fruit from the buffet area. The service we received again was excellent.
The restaurant is al le carte so don’t expect a banquet. But the food and service we received, like I said was excellent.

Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
