This place has been around for what seems like ever. I visited recently with a few friends as it's been a few years since I last visited and I have to say I left a bit underwhelmed. Staff very friendly and good service, but my chicken was a bit over cooked and my nan brunt...although still a fairly tasty meal.... More

Hidden in the back streets of Aldgate is this gem of a restaurant. I have been there a few times now for lunch. Their Biryani is really lovely and is highly recommended. You might find it needs a bit of extra salt (depending on your taste buds) so don’t be shy to sprinkle some on. The chutneys they have on... More

Visited here with my friend, had a great meal. Service was excellent, and the flavours in each of the dishes were fantastic. Quality of the food was good, the rice portion was massive. Lovely side dishes too. A little more expensive than Brick Lane, but we both concluded it was worth the extra cost for the increased quality. We'll definitely... More

Must be almost 40 years since I first chanced upon Halal after being posted to work at the now long gone itinerant DHSS office on Mark St. I used to eat meat then and liked the Mutton Vindaloo with the fragrant colourful Pilau Rice. The restaurant then was very basic and at dinnertime more café than restaurant. I'd never encountered... More

This unassuming-looking building, tucked away in a backstreet behind Aldgate East station, is a great find for great curry. Claiming to be the oldest curry house in the east end, this is the opposite to the Brick Lane tourist offering - just simple, great curry, at great prices, cooking by people who take pride in what they do. It's often... More

Large group visited here and were well looked after by friendly staff. Food was excellent and service first class. Despite our less than organised viewing of the menu (thanks to a lengthy pub session), we were treated very well. Basically the staff couldn't do enough for us and there is no doubt, we will be back.

Hadn't been back for years and years, since first eating here (regularly) almost 30 years ago. Went back a few weeks ago & was astonished at how good it still was. I was in the area again for business and thought, why not. I was not disappointed, Service was excellent, food was outstanding. Took my boss along, he loved it... More

Me and my friend went on Valentine's day and were in for a treat! Really recommend the onion bhaji, brilliant value for money, great service and food, an underrated gem in the heart of East London.

We found this by accident when staying in the area. Its tucked away down a back street and is one of the oldest Indian restaurants in London. Unfortunately it seems as if it hasn't changed much since it opened. However the food is good and the service friendly and has a quaint charm.

Staying in Whitechapel

Neighbourhood Profile
Whether you're here for its dynamic street life, world class galleries or famed curry houses, you're bound to be wowed by the uniquely cosmopolitan flavor of Whitechapel. Long gone are the days when Jack the Ripper stalked its streets. And despite his mysterious legacy bringing throngs of curiosity driven tour groups to its back alleys and otherwise serene garden squares, these days you're more likely to catch a cutting edge fashionista scurrying through its age old lanes than criminals of any sort.
