This is one of my favourite restaurants, but the service and quality of food this week were really not up to standard. We waited around 30 minutes to be served and did complain about this and most of staff were apologetic . On the food front I ordered a whole plaice which is not what I received, also taste was... Return visit and no surprises on the menu, I chose crab starter and venison main course, both were high quality and portion size was good. I didn't have a desert but the posset looked excellent Wine choice is good and it's possible to buy a good wine at £25 to £30 a bottle, but the list caters for those who... More

Fabulous pies, good old fashioned service, good wine list. Somewhere close by but not the usual chain style place, more relaxed with a higher quality feel to it. Don't need to roll up your trouser leg to eat here (but it may help!).

Agree with other recent reviews ie a good lunch with efficient service but nothing to blow you away . Crab on toast very good and certainly a generous portion .On the other hand my main course calves liver was a fairly measly size . However side order of spinach was cooked to perfection . We ate upstairs and I sensed... More

Excellent service, this time in upstairs dining room which is not quite as atmospheric as downstairs - but very light and airy. Had wonderful Dorset crab on toast for starter and then the fish. Nice carafe of South African white.

The Mercer is a decent bet for a business lunch/dinner around the city. Food is good and service reliably organised. Venison was good, pie also seemed nice although neither had any wow factor.

Visited for a business lunch. Had a lovely salad to start (smoked chicken, avocado, pancetta) and venison haunch for main. The venison was over cooked unfortunately and service was a bit hit and miss. Tables are quite close to each other too which is not great when in a business discussion. Not sure if I will hurry back - too... More

I must admit to being a big fan of the Mercer, but when the ambiance, service and food are this good then why not. I will once again be back soon!!

Have eaten here a few times recently. The food is good British dishes with an excellent choice and a daily special. The pies are excellent! Service is mixed but usually ok. The Mercer is a must for breakfast. It is excellent.

As the title suggests the food is average to good not wow however it is quite pricey for what you get. Considering some the options near by, this wouldn't be my first choice but is a decent choice.

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
