After trawling the shops in Charing Cross Road, my wife really fancied Italian. Just round the corner from the Palace Theatre we found this place. Prompt friendly service, lush food and good value. Both the bruschetta and cheesy garlic bread were easily among the best we've ever had. Tagliatelle alla Melanie (spinach, cream and mushrooms) and spaghetti carbonara (with chunks... More

I assume this restaurant has been around for some time. The decor, menu and entire experience gave me a few "deja vu" moments, as it reminded me of the many similar types of Italian retaurants that were around in the early 80' s, when I first started eating out.The many that have survived since then have had to reinvent themselves,... We found this place a few years ago and nearly always end up back there when coming up to Theatreland! It's well placed right on Charing Cross Road, a short walk from Tottenham Court Road station, which is a bit quieter than the other West End stations. The service is always friendly and the food is excellent, cannot recommend it... More

Enjoyed the garlic bread very much and mussels and prawn and avocado starters were also good. However the veal in masala wine was not very tasty. The tables are very close together so no intimacy, in fact the table next to us were very noisy and it spoiled it for us.

Recently went with my wife and daughter on a Monday evening. We remember going there many years ago and having a good traditional Italian Trattoria meal - so we thought we would try it again. We shared 2 starters ( Buschetta & Squid rings ) 3 mains ( some sort of 'special' chicken, a 'special' pasta / spaghetti and a... More

Popped in for lunch before seeing Aladdin. We prefer to use independent restaurants where possible. Had a starter (bruschetta) and mains. Eldest daughter and I had a calzone, my wife had a risotto and youngest daughter had a ravioli. All the meals were ok, not enough pepperoni in my calzone for my liking, but my daughter thought hers was just... More

To be honest the Google reviews were mixed but we had this restaurant recommended and I'm glad I went with that. It was lovely, from the greeting at the door when we arrived right through the meal the service was first class, the food was lovely and reasonably priced and the staff knew we were visiting the theatre and so... Description
An Italian restaurant out of the ordinary, Melanies specialises in Neapolitan food, setting it apart from the numerous other dining rooms in Londons central Soho area. Located on the notorious Old Compton Street, close to Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and the numerous theatres and cinemas the West End has to offer, Melanies is easy to spot thanks to its large awning proudly displaying the red, green and white of the Italian flag. Inside, youll find a dining room clad in much light wood and full of light, traditional, simple and comfortable in its dcor. In the kitchen, the focus is very much on the use of good ingredients, the chefs sourcing local and seasonal produce for their classic Neapolitan dishes. Youll recognise many of Melanies offerings, from favourite pizzas to well known pasta dishes, but youll also be tempted to try the specialties of the house which include the typical ingredients of Naples and the surrounding countryside and have roots in the Greco-Roman period.

Staying in Soho

Neighbourhood Profile
Soho
The go-to district for a good time in London, Soho hosts a wealth of world-class theatres and a compelling lineup of cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, and clubs. At Soho's core is London's original Red Light District and the epicenter of the LGBT scene – and thus the city's hottest nightlife. For shopping enthusiasts, Soho is not only the home of London's greatest concentration of boutique shops, but also the most strategic place to set off on a tour of the world's most celebrated department stores. In the southern part of the neighbourhood lies Chinatown, with its multitude of delicious and affordable restaurants. Closer to the Thames, Chinatown's narrow and teeming lantern-lit lanes spill onto the expansive hub of glitzy Leicester Square.
