We were staying at Hever Castle B&B and wanted an equally gorgeous place to eat dinner. Happily, just a short taxi ride away was Thackeray’s. We had a wonderful meal, in a beautiful dining room, with fabulous service, and accompanied with gorgeous wines. They were...More

Our family looked forward to an enjoyable evening which is what we had except some disappointment with the meal. The menu was interesting and the presentation of the food very good. However I feel the chef probably tasted individual elements of each course but has...More

Visited on Friday evening. Strong menu with broad choice. Food was lovely but being a bit picky- which at these prices I feel I can be- service is patchy. I can lunch at 3 michlen star in London for less than this so service should...More

Super amazing. Service impeccable. Just left and felt the need to review straight away. An experience as well as first class food. Wow. New waiter who couldn’t of been more charming. We can’t wait to go back.

I booked a table online and was asked if it was a special occasion to which the answer was yes, it was our wedding anniversary. This point was not acknowledged at all throughout the evening so I’m not sure why they ask, We were presented...More

Overpriced horrible experiences in fine dining are ‘usually’ rare. Thackeray’s has managed to convinced me that any Tom, Dick and Harry can operate a ‘fine dining’ establishment. Average greeting followed by fifteen minutes of sitting without a menu (drinks). Asked if we would like a...More

Pretentious, overpriced, poor service and below average cuisine. They only serve unknown whiskey at double the price of a premium whiskey anywhere else. There is a discretionary 12.5% "service charge" included, which I paid, so as not to embarrass my guests.

My daughter and I visited Thakeray’s restaurant for Saturday lunch. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was warm and professional. Service was swift and unobtrusive, we were regularly topped up with water and the beetroot bread served with whipped, salted butter and spiced hummus...More

We have driven past Thackeray’s many times and thought we would give it a try for a birthday treat. Having read through the reviews I was a little apprehensive. I’m pleased to say our experience was very pleasurable. Service was attentive without being intrusive, the...More

We were smart casual which seemed to be right for the place, but I really don’t think it matters too much.

They do not. Surprising to say the least, for a restaurant of this standard.

Description
This one-time home of the author of Vanity Fair in spa town Tunbridge Wells is one of the most charming restaurants in England. An enchanting atmosphere pervades two gloriously elegant dining rooms overlooking the green. The food is equally beguiling. Co-proprietor and former head chef at MPW’s Criterion Richard Phillips serves an intelligent, technically-perfect Modern French menu that’s infinitely worth travelling for - you won’t be able to prepare food like this at home.
