This is probably the most up market Chinese in Brighton and definitely worth a visit. The restaurant is lively and vibrant with a good atmosphere. It seemed particularly good for larger groups. Good menu with some standard Chinese dishes and some interesting ones we had...More

Ordered takeaway to try nice chinese and pay more. Well to everyone’s disappointment it wasn’t worth the money. Vietnamese spring roll was fried veg spring roll that fell appart, kung po chicken was hard breaded chicked in sweet chilli sauce etc.. I’ll not order again

Dithered over this spur of the moment choice, but we loved it all. The men's toilets are apparently worth a look!

The food is average, mostly westernized in order to appeal to the English taste, I don't blame that because in order to get popular in this country they need to adjust the cuisine. HOWEVER, it was very obvious that the manager and some waiters are...More

Not being able to visit our usual Chinese restaurant, we chose this one. The service was surly, the food overall was poor and over seasoned. On the plus side, the tempura was good, but that is all I can say on this restaurant sadly. Not...More

From the sesame toast through the duck to the sea bass and beef in black bean sauce our food was simply outstanding, Despite the restaurant being really busy, the service was both very efficient and very friendly. A splendid experience: we will definitely go back!

My vegan partner & I recently attended a long-standing clients' Xmas dinner party at Gars Chinese Restaurant in Brighton (who are not only very long-established but historically have a great reputation for feeding animal-eaters) on the express promise from the owner that we would cater....More

This restaurant has the most wonderful Chinese food with many original dishes. The place has a real authenticity about it. The icing on the cake is the standard of service provided by the staff. Thank you for a great visit.

25 of us attended for a Christmas do. Pre-booked and the majority paid. Options were £28 or £35 for a 3 course meal. When served, the main course was ONE bowl of Kung-Po chicken and ONE bowl of Lamb shank between 5 paying customers. £140...More

Description
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
