Wonderful evening meal

Many thanks for making our evening very pleasant last night. My wife very much enjoyed her birthday meal. We had the Bangkok set meal for 2 as we could not decide and wanted a nice variety rather than getting the same things we normally get. The food was delicious and the service and friendlyness of the waitress and your enthusiasm for the restaurant was both warm refreshing. We will definitely be making a return and with friends soon.... Thank you.

Excellent Thai food although bit expensive

We are lovers of Thai food and we really appreciated this restaurant at the centre of Exeter. Exquisite food, although we found it a bit pricey, but this may be because of how much we are used to paying for Thai food in other areas. Very good service as well, and a very polite cook who visited our table to ask how we are doing. We will be visiting again, but would do more often is it was bit cheaper

What can I say but well done Thai Orchid. Only takeaway was available but it was still better than the crap served in other oriental restaurants in the city. Great, strong flavours and attention to details like galangal and lime leaf in the Tom Yam and the chunks of soft beef in the Massaman. I have rejoined my family in London now and will be returning to Thailand very soon. Thanks again Exeter and Thai Orchid. See you again soon.

Take Away Rubbish & Service

Ordered a takeaway on line ordered it for 19-00 , 20-00 not come ,so I called the restaurant only to be told they had 30 orders for 19-00 so would delivery my order when they could or as soon as they had a driver available! And informed me it was all cooked and waiting ! I made it clear I wanted it cooked fresh and delivered hot . I also pointed out why take so many orders if you can’t deliver on time or at least 20mins either way . Lady said the owner would contact me for a discount off my next order ! Never had a call about that . Order turned up one and a half hours late totally unacceptable and was only Luke warm . The food quality was poor to say the least and they delivered one incorrect meal ! I called them again and had to listen to a discussion between the owner and staff as to what had happened, they blamed the kitchen and said they would send out another correct meal right away , well another 1 hour later I received my correctly ordered meal but it was half the size of the first one sent ! My wife had finished her meal an hour before mine arrived . Not because I experienced problems but the food was bland and mushy far below expectation. I spent £43 only to go in the bin apart from the rice portions which were very nice . Terrible service, terrible delivery and non caring management with no follow up call ! 4 days gone now ! If I do get a refund or even a call from management I will up date this review

Really rude waiter, mains didn't arrive even after 1.5hours

After an hour and a half wait - with two other tables who arrived after us receiving their mains before us - our mains still hadn't arrived and we had to leave for another engagement. This is obviously a long time to wait but in itself was only mildly annoying for us as we could see they were busy and mistakes/oversights happen. However the reason for one star review is the gross reaction we received from the waiter. We didn't complain at first, just said we unfortunately had to leave and asked for the bill for our drinks and starter, but the waiter seemed to take this personally and was extremely rude, saying we should have told him we had another engagement and that an hour and half wasn't a long time to wait. He was extremely dismissive, unapologetic, and unpleasant, which made the situation a really poor reflection on the restaurant. I'm not sure why he took such offense to us not being able to wait longer than an hour and a half for our food, but it was a really bizarre and unpleasant reaction to what otherwise should have been a pretty mundane non-incident. On his behaviour alone we will never go back there and I'd really recommend staying away from this restaurant if you don't want to be spoken to like you're an idiot.

We waited to order then we waited and waited and waited for our starter. Finally told it would be 1 minute. Then we waited and waited until told starter not coming but main course would be 1 minute. So we waited and waited until the main finally arrived. 40 minutes after ordering. Half way through the £17 for 6 tiny prawns and £15 for 3 strips of beef mains, the starter arrived! Ok so they didn't charge us for the starter but the whole experience was expensive, annoying and left a bad taste in the mouth.

Appallingly slow service and cold food

Pleasant enough small centrally located restaurant. Started fine with prawn crackers and wine but then very slow. 30 minute wait for starter which was very over spiced and so hot with chilli to be almost inedible. Main courses still hadn't arrived an hour later and when I complained the food miraculously materialised immediately but it was luke warm at best...My duck was fatty and stringy and my wife''s prawns undercooked and cold. We couldn't imagine what had been happening for the last hour in the kitchen... Clearly the carry out /deliveroo business which was constant had taken priority. What made the whole experience particularly unacceptable was, however, the attitude of the waitress who argued with us when we complained and took a fork from my wife and stuck it into a prawn before proclaiming that "it semed cooked. " Altogether not a pleasurabe experience.

And a SHAMBLES it really was…

Oh dear, where do I start We had horses we own running at Newton Abbot and having made the journey from Salisbury by train, decided to look for a restaurant on the way back and were pleased when The Thai Orchid took our online booking A short while after booking we took a call asking us to delay our 8pm booking slot due to a large party arriving simultaneously, no problem I said. Anyway with our taxi already booked we arrived in the lovely Cathedral Close setting at around 730pm and enjoyed drinks outside an neighbouring bar. With no sign of the large party arrival at just after 8pm, we enquired as to the availability of our booked table, but readily agreed to our previously agreed delayal On sitting at our table at around 830 it became apparent that the proprietor (an ageing plump and goatee bearded gent) was a rather stressed. We were presented with foldered menus and a wine list as well as a tatty single sheet ‘temporary wine list’, ordering from the more elaborate list seemed to irritate ‘mine host’ , explaining he had issues with his normal supplier, hence the temporary offering, one wonders why on earth we were tempted by the normal offerings and subsequently questioned the nature of said dispute! Anyway a perfectly acceptable bottle arrived followed by our starters, part of the set meal we chose An hour later, my wife gently enquired as to the likely arrival of our main course, with it now being 945 and our train departure being 11pm. She was chastised by the proprietor for not making him aware of our ‘tight timescale’. I would not have thought an 8pm booking to catch a 11pm train at a station nearby was overly reckless On quietly discussing this with my wife, I mentioned that I thought our chosen venue appeared to be rather ‘a shambles’ This seemed to light the proverbial touch paper… ‘did somebody say the word shambles’, muttered our host, through gritted teeth… I duly admitted, explaining our disappointment, quietly and rationally, only to be roared at… telling us to get out and that we ( a 60 year old couple) were banned for life My wife was consoled by what appeared to be a senior waitress, ‘oh no, not again’ she said, a history check on this very site, proving such aggressive outbursts are not uncommon here. We were escorted to the door where our charming host told me how keen he was to ‘knock my f…… block off’ Please do review my history here on Trip Advisor and judge my rationale . Never, ever have I been treated like this… This man is indeed A SHAMBLES

Lovely Anniversary Meal

Our 2nd visit to Thai Orchid for our 5th Anniversary meal and was not disappointed. We went for the "Bangkok" - set meal for 2.... Absolutely delicious, the beef was quite spicy for our taste buds, however very tasty and the rice helped to calm it down. They may have been short staffed this evening but all the staff were still friendly, professional and attentive. We would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant for either couples, friends, business etc etc. Prices very reasonable for the friendly welcome, quality of the food, presentation and service. Many thanks to the chefs, waitresses and the owner. Shaun and Helen

Incredible Thai Food

Upon arrival, we were greeted in an extremely welcoming manner even though we got there almost towards their closing time. The staff were extremely friendly, sociable, and kind in their delivery of words and we had many sweet conversations with them. The atmosphere felt extremely homely and authentic with beautiful patterned windows and decorations. As well as this, the sweet, spectacular aroma which filled the restaurant particularly blew my mind! The food was incredibly delicious and brought back memories of the authenticity of Thailand. I would particularly recommend their soups as they are filled with enticing, delicious and rich flavours which could not be experienced satisfactorily in any other Thai food places. Ultimately, I would highly recommend attending this restaurant and I am definitely willing to eat there on a daily basis!

Takeaway Delight

Ordered takeaway through the website. Site worked great but I didnt get a confirmation email or message for my order. Called up the next day when open and my order had been received which was great. Food was a little late being delivered but they threw in a free bottle of wine to make up for the delay which I thought was a really nice gesture. The food was sublime, not greasy like a lot of other takeaways. I could not recommend this place enough based on the food. It really was that good.

Farewell meal with University Son

Oh what a gem! ...Situated in Cathedral Close ~a stones throw from the cathedral & nestled amongst olde worlde buildings. From the moment we arrived we were graciously welcomed by Melissa & shown to our table. The service was prompt but discreet, the food was sublime & it also had a wide & varied drinks menu. We had a lovely evening - made even more pleasant by the waitress, Melissa, who talked through the choices on the menu & conscientously tended to us throughout our time there. It’s definitely the place to go for authentic Thai food, great ambiance & wonderful service.

Great food but slow service

Booked a table for 6pm and selected one of the set menus. A 3 course meal. The food was incredible, however the 3 courses took a total of 150 minutes to complete. 40 minutes from arrival to starter, another 40 minutes to the main course, another 40 minutes to get some ice cream and jasmine tea to finish. I had to leave before the ice cream to make a late business meeting. Disappointing.

Terrible service mediocre food

Am sitting in this restaurant right now. We have been here for one and a half hours. So far they only have managed to produce starters for 2 of us both delivered at different times. After asking numerous times I was told mine was “difficult to cook” when it came it was deep fried frozen breaded sea food with a standard sweet chilli dip. Not difficult to cook at all. My partners starter of mushroom satay was pretty dull too. Dreadful service and so far pretty mediocre food. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone

Wish we’d read ‘StAlbansPadre‘ review before visiting. Very similar experience. Should’ve left when we heard a couple complaining about their 50 minute wait for starters as we arrived. After ordering drinks another table sat down next to us sometime after. We then placed our order, followed by the neighbouring table. Their starters arrived after a long wait but ours took even longer - 1.5 hours after our arrival!! The mains came somewhat quicker but like the aforementioned review one dish was so over spiced it was almost inedible. The next door table were then overcharged and had to argue their case. We weren’t but received an apology for the wait but nothing else. Very disappointing meal after a recommendation from a family member. After such a poor service we would normally have negotiated a fair price but after such a long night didn’t have the patience. Instead this will be our last visit.
