THE THAI ORCHID RESTAURANT, Exeter

Wish we’d read ‘StAlbansPadre‘ review before visiting. Very similar experience. Should’ve left when we heard a couple complaining about their 50 minute wait for starters as we arrived. After ordering drinks another table sat down next to us sometime after. We then placed our order,...followed by the neighbouring table. Their starters arrived after a long wait but ours took even longer - 1.5 hours after our arrival!! The mains came somewhat quicker but like the aforementioned review one dish was so over spiced it was almost inedible. The next door table were then overcharged and had to argue their case. We weren’t but received an apology for the wait but nothing else. Very disappointing meal after a recommendation from a family member. After such a poor service we would normally have negotiated a fair price but after such a long night didn’t have the patience. Instead this will be our last visit.More

Great Authentic Thai food.

Top quality Thai food. Been here a handful of times and had different great food every-time. Massive menu is only hard part is choosing the food.

Appallingly slow service and cold food

Pleasant enough small centrally located restaurant. Started fine with prawn crackers and wine but then very slow. 30 minute wait for starter which was very over spiced and so hot with chilli to be almost inedible. Main courses still hadn't arrived an hour later and...when I complained the food miraculously materialised immediately but it was luke warm at best...My duck was fatty and stringy and my wife''s prawns undercooked and cold. We couldn't imagine what had been happening for the last hour in the kitchen... Clearly the carry out /deliveroo business which was constant had taken priority. What made the whole experience particularly unacceptable was, however, the attitude of the waitress who argued with us when we complained and took a fork from my wife and stuck it into a prawn before proclaiming that "it semed cooked. " Altogether not a pleasurabe experience.More

Best since Thailand

The food and service were amazing. I’ve been trying to find a Thai restaurant that will instantly take me back to Thailand with their cooking. Thai Orchid certainly done that. One of the best (if not the best) I have had. The food was clean,...flavoursome and the portions were huge. Thank you for an awesome experience. We will definitely visit again when we are next in Exeter.More

Closed in January but still takes bookings :(

I booked to go here for my Birthday, arrived to find the restaurant closed! We spoke to Al afraid next door (really good food here!) to see if they could have us, which they couldn’t. Apparently Thai orchid go away for January however still take...bookings. It’s really disappointing.More

Delicious

We weren’t sure what to order so went for one of the set menus. It was brilliant. We ended up with plates of food we would never have ordered but so glad it gave us a chance to try it. Would definitely recommend.

Closed!

We booked a table which was confirmed via email, turned up the restaurant which was closed. No notice on the website or door and still accepting bookings.

Never even got in the door !

We booked online and had this confirmed in an email. We turned up on time having driven 30 miles to Exeter, then Park and Ride and finally a ten minute walk to arrive spot on 1pm Wed 22nd December for our Thia experience. How dissapointing...to find the restaraunt CLOSED. No notice with any explanation. I rang the number to hear an answering machine. Just as we wre leaving we saw a man come out and we obviously asked what was going on. He said he was a chef and there was illness at the restaraunt. NO NOTICE ON DOOR NO E-MAIL We are not well pleased !More

Restaurant closed despite a confirmed booking

Have eaten at the Thai Orchid many times, the food and service has always been excellent. However, today was very different! We booked a table for lunch and had an emailed confirmation several days ago. After a 40 mile drive, we arrived at the restaurant...at the agreed time to find the door locked and lights off. Knocking the door brought a man who said they wern't open despite our booking. He closed and locked the door - not very professional! Some minutes later, we managed to attract the attention of a lady who turned out to be the chef. She was far more polite than the previous man, contacted the owner, who, from the conversation didn't seem to care. The chef said we could go inside, but she said she didn't know how to turn on the lights and said several times she couldn't serve food. Needless to say, we walked away. A real pity to be treated in such an unprofessional way by the restaurant; you have to do better. We will not be returning!More

Thai food by the cathedral

A quiet lunchtime, but made very welcome, and the food was great, plenty of food, and a very reasonable lunch menu, lovely friendly service, a must on a visit to exeter !!
