Friendly staff who made excellent recommendations based on our tastes. Great Italian beer I haven't come across anywhere else. The place was busy and the music on point. The pasta and lasagnes were packed with taste.

Great food

We went here a couple of weeks ago & enjoyed it. The staff were lovely and friendly & helpful. The food was lovely & very yummy with the only downside is that you are sitting close to each other & it can get very noisy. With the social distancing for covid19 they will need to have greater distance between the tables & that will help with the noise.

Italian food done right! Relaxed and attentive service, tasty food, wood fired pizzas. Particularly enjoyed the beautiful large wine glasses they served my red wine in. Overall a delightful evening

Something has changed...

I’ve been dining at Al Forno for a couple of years now and in the last two visits I’ve seen a big difference in service, atmosphere and quality of meals. It was a great little Italian restaurant, fresh food, presented well, served by Italians or high standard servers. The restaurant was run very well and the quality of food was very good....sadly, in the past two visits it just doesn’t seem to have the high standards it used too...not sure if it’s a change in management or another reason. If it is new management, I think they should consider what was working well with the previous owners and continue suit...because it worked well and was always busy with repeat customers.

Appalling Experience

Never again will we done here. We had booked a table for a special occasion …and after only 1 hour 25 minutes were told that we would have to leave, as our table was booked for other diners!! This was certainly NOT stated on their website or we would not have booked to dine here. We had only just finished our main course & not even been asked if we would like dessert or coffees! The tables were jammed together, in fact one fight in front of the entrance and the prices were not cheap so we expected far better service and hospitality than this. Not good enough Al Forno. We won’t be back.

The Antipasto with Salami, ham, prosciutto, salmon etc. was good, disappointing were the 4 crackers, 4 tiny olives and very small dish of Pesto. The Pizza Bread we ordered on the side was very nice. The Gnocchi and Spaghetti Carbonara were absolutely delicious, two of us had the Snapper which was really overcooked. They did offer to cook it again which we declined since the rest of our party was already eating. We would certainly go back for the Pasta, but wouldn't order fish again.

An Excellent Italian Choice

My wife and I arrived a little early for our booked but were welcomed with a big smile. The service was great right from the very first minute as we were seated to our table. The menu selection was impressive and you can order a wonderful arrange of choices for your meal. We elected to go for the Pizza Agilo Olio e Parmigiano for our starter which has to be one of the best cheese and garlic wood fired breads I’ve ever had! For the mains I had the Al Forno Pizza and my wife had the Seafood Marinara. Both were very decent sized dishes and packed full of flavour. The pizza with its spicy salami was fantastic. The Mariana has no shortage of seafood which tasted great. To finish off the night we shared the Creme Brulee with Pistachio Gelato. The Brulee was one of the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot! The hint of orange really adds to the taste and the custard was prefect. The Pistachio gelato was also amazing and topped off a great dessert and wonderful meal. We’ll be back for sure!!!

BEST Italian in NZ

We just love this restaurant. The atmosphere is intimate, exciting and cosy. The service is A1+, with friendly and helpful staff. Then there is the food, never had a disappointment yet. The menu is substantial with lots of pasta, pizza and meatlovers options. We always have a different Pasta dish, fresh salad, antipasto and a dessert.

Oh dear..

Tried really hard to give them the benefit of the doubt, because it was a busy night, but it was pretty poor (service and food). Food took forever, with a few in our group waiting for a long time after the rest were served. When they finally arrived meals were wrong, undercooked or soggy. The waitress was broadly unimpressed, barely spoke and rarely came over. On the plus side, the garlic pizza bread was very tasty. But overall, very disappointed because we had heard good things previously, but we won't be back.

Great food but timing off

As a family of four, we visited here on a Saturday evening for my daughter's birthday. We only ordered main courses but the salad and pizza came out long before the pasta dishes. The timings were totally off. However, they did apologise. The food was very tasty and I would visit again in the hope that the timing of the service was better. The actual wait staff themselves were very friendly and courteous. My daughter said it was the best pizza she had ever had - praise indeed!

My wife and i enjoyed an amazing meal at this establishment for my birthday. The staff were very friendly, extremely attentive and servive was very quick. I had the Chicken Parm and my wife had the seafood linguine and we shared a half & half pizza. The moctails we had also went down very well. All and all a great experience and looking forward to the next time we can come back.

Very disappointing meal

The restaurant was busy. Having said that, it took nearly an hour to serve our main course, with apologies made more than once for the delay. We have eaten in Al Forno perhaps 25 times over the years. The food when it arrived was poor. The Fetuccine was undercooked, the sauce was glutinous and the roughly chopped supermarket ham and a few mushrooms lacked any flavour. Couldn’t eat more than half, surprised I made it that far. My wife’s escallopine Marsala was undercooked, watery, no creamy Marsala in the flavour, vegetables too tough to cut. Never again. Staff friendly, wine and pizza bread good.

We had a wonderful evening at Al Forno. The booking on line through trip advisor was super easy. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we had great service from who we believed to be the manager. The food was first class as was the complimentary shot of limoncello. It is favorite after our first visit.

Terrible service management

I would like to start by saying that I will never come back here, the food is good however it is very overpriced. The waitress did a fantastic job, but the host that night treated her extremely badly because of a single mistake. She was his employee, thus it was improper for him to treat her so crudely. I have also talked to people who have worked there, young ladies. The manager inappropriately flirts with them and harasses them, the chefs use electrical cigars in the kitchen while in working hours and one time there was very loudly verbal fights between the workers there. I don't recommend going here, and definitely won't be coming back.

The duty manager was so rude but other staff lovely

Terrible treatment by the duty manager and the other staff were left embarrassed. We were moved from our corner spot which was checked by the lovely maître D was free. Only to be moved by the duty manager. It was embarrassing for other staff and not great as it was the second table move after we requested the corner especially. Food tasty but before it was exceptional under previous management. We won’t be back in a hurry- treated like special customers at other places
