It was so busy, we ate our lunch on the sidewalk just outside! As delicious as it's reputation suggests.

Its very rare a restaurant lives up to its hype and buzz, but this one did. The food was amazing! Well worth the few minutes wait in the cold. There was no fancy fanfare, basically joined the line at the door, which by the way moves very quickly, got in, ordered the classic sandwich. Meal came really quickly, was delicious,... More

My partner and I love neighborhood landmark restaurants such as Ben's Chili Bowl in D.C. or Farlow's Philadelphia Deli, but we were highly disappointed with this over-priced tourist trap. Terrible service and mediocre food, this restaurant abuses its legacy to take advantage of tourists. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy when we arrived, as my partner and I planned strategically, knowing... More

I took a taxi to get my fix of Montreal smoked meat. I did takeout. I wasn't dissapointed and had a satisfying sandwich. What makes this sandwich so tasty is that they cook it long enough to break all the connective tissue. Obviously swartz's been doing it a long time and knows how to do it right. Taste 10 texture... Waited on line about 20/30 minutes. Fun place/ churn and burn / very kind and friendly service / very good sandwich but if you've been to Carnegie, Katz's, or 2nd avenue deli in NY you may not be that impressed. But then again $7 US is a lot better than $18 plus in NY!

Wow... charming, old school, it's all about the meat. (Hot meat after 1030). It's cool to go back to cash only, family style restaurant that cares more about the food than the wifi. Service was exceptional as was the experience. Loved it.

This place is classic. The line out the door moves fast, and the wait is worth it. Super old-school. Get the sandwich, medium with fries and soda, coleslaw and a pickle. No fuss, no frills, just a great sandwich. Be prepared to sit close to others. It's a tight squeeze. Well worth it and really pleased the food is still... More

Wow - what a line to wait, but very much worth it. Plus, it's kind of fun waiting in line with others and talking about what's to come. We ordered meat sandwiches, fries, and bought a jar of pickles. All very yummy! Sandwich looks small at first, but its is quite filling in the end. Get your take out and... More

So worth it! Although you may have to wait, and it's not posh or even comfortable, really...But it's just about the smoked meats (and great homemade fries).

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
