The service was very good and the food was excellent. You can't get a better price for the quality of the food you can order.

At first, this restaurant seemed very nice, the waiters and owner were extremely polite and the food was decent. However, the owner misled us into ordering more expensive dishes. At first, we intended on ordering 3 dishes, but she informed us that rice was not included and cost an extra $2 per bowl and proceeded to recommend that we order... More

I went in on the urging of an employee and going in wasn't a mistake. The meal proved to be quite enjoyable and the service attentive. The waiter helped order and I had wonton soup, pan fried dumplings, orange chicken, white rice and sautéed mixed Chinese vegetables ............... it turned out to be quite a meal. There was none left... More

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Chez Maxim Oriental on Saturday evening around 6 p.m. We loved the impeccable service! An employee greeted us at the door and directed us upstairs as the restaurant is on the second floor. From the classy decor to the pleasant waiters that served us, we simply loved our experience here. I will note... More

Came mid-January for a late lunch. The beef was uncooked. It was taken back, but I still feel like that wasn't enough. The general Tao chicken was very good on the other hand, along with the spring rolls, hot and sour soup and wonton soup. Do not think I'd go back or recommend.

Craving for some Chinese food, we went to the Chez Maxim Oriental for dinner. Initially, we were going to order crab soup for an appetizer, but the waitress recommended a different soup and suggested that we tried the crab legs prepared in gingers and chives. Oh boy! This is by far one of the best crab dish in this restaurant.... More

Made the trip because of the reviews on TA. Was kinda home sick so we went to this Chinese restaurant. Warmly greeted by the shopowner and we made quick decisions in selecting a wide range of dim sum to treat my family's stomach. Dimsum was authentic in my opinion (for one that came from Hong Kong) and freshly made, in... More

30 steps up to the restaurant plus an additional 20 steps if you need to go to the washroom. Beautiful dining room painted with soft colors. Also impeccably clean; on the upper scale if you compare this place to other places in Chinatown. Menuwise, the winter special advertised on the sidewalk was not available because apparently, they could’nt prepare for... More

Stopped on snowy day with family on walk home from Old Montreal to Museum of Contemporary Art and Phillip Square. Nice view of China Town street from second floor windows. The four of us had wonton soup with lunch special for $8. Broth was acceptable and wontons were very good with shrimp. If you do not like shrimp do not... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Bakeries, markets, restaurants, and buffets crowd the brightly graffitied streets of Chinatown, the city's aromatic destination for pan-Asian cuisine. Distinguished at its entry points by towering vermillion paifang gates, the compact neighbourhood acts as a focal point for the Chinese community, hectic with educational facilities, cultural centres, acupuncturists, and foreign-language newspapers. Especially vibrant in the warmer months, when the sweet smell of dragon beard candy along the pedestrian walks of Rue de la Gauchetière signal the beginning of the outdoor street fair season, Chinatown is a treasure hunter's dream, with enough knickknack and curiosity shops to tempt even the pickiest shoppers. The convivial vibe picks up after dark, when the area's active nightlife offers evening crowds their choice of drink, dance, and midnight snacks of pho or oysters. Chinatown's mix of new and old, with herbal remedies being sold alongside pop-culture DVDs, gives the area its own animated brand of moxie.
