My friend and I stumbled on Marche on arrival to Montreal after checking into our nearby hotel. It was pouring rain and cold and that odd time of day that's well past lunch yet too early for dinner. Marche was the perfect solution to this dilemma. Its warm, inviting, French country-style ambience was homey and the service was equally warm... More

I'm surprised to read reviews saying it's touristy. It was full of locals in October with plenty of people ordering takeout from the counter. The food was fresh and delicious. My crepe arrived with a huge bowl of fruit. It was very crowded but our waiter (who looked like Benecio del Toro) was singing and serving like a pro. Went... More

I have seen some reviewers call this a tourist spot, so I almost avoided it. But I was in the mood for charcuterie and it was close to the hotel so I went anyway. After all, I am a tourist. I am so glad I came here. The charcuterie was the best I had in town after trying it at... More

Go elsewhere. It's charming in its look. The service is inconsistent. We ordered the cassoulet. It featured too many potatoes.

My friend and I came for breakfast on a Sunday when the place we had planned to visit was packed full. The welcome was not warm. We were ignored although the place was not at all busy when we arrived. We seated ourselves and eventually attracted someone's attention and requested menus. After that, things got better quickly. The restaurant got... More

Seriously the WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. Had to wait over 1 hour for the food, with no one filling our water or even checking in at all during the 1 hour wait. No apologies. Just ignorance. There were only four other tables. Two parties came AFTER US and received their food within 20 minutes of their order, while we sat, staring... More

We had dinner here last night after spotting this cafe on an earlier walk around old Montreal. We decided to try the house speciality called Fondue au Fromage. OMG this was the best we have had in a lomg time. The ambience of the cafe is great and the waiters are friendly and very french :) Do yourself a favour... More

Really happy we went there for lunch. Such a great French atmosphere. French music wood tables. Thought we were in Paris. Food was good. Very good place to visit. Place across the road was too full and has become overrated so happy we stumbled on this place

This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip, the place is really cozy, you really get the feeling as if you were in France, the food was very good and our waitress was amazing, super friendly and very happy to help with everything, I would definitely recommend to stop by if you are in old Montreal, the food... Our food was good but there seemed to be a serious problem in the kitchen- compounded by a surly waiter. MANY people were unhappy waiting for their food but our waiter was not nice and a nearby table got up and left after being ignored too long.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
