We had not had Persian food before. It's basically Iranian, sort of a cross between Indian and middle eastern. Very flavourful kabobs, with rice, and healthy, unusual stews. Not much of a beer selection, just the major Canadian brands in bottled. Worth a try, especially if you've never had Persian food before, and you are in the neighbourhood. Service was... More

I live down the street so I thought I would give Darvish a try. The server was notably slow, it took a few passes to get my water and sometimes the waitress was not seen for some time. The staff was very kind and welcoming. I ordered a mint, tomato, cucumber onion salad to start for $5. The table bread... More

It really is not an easy place to find since the front of the restaurant is so narrow and you could miss it easily. Inside is a long and narrow restaurant with a few tables. Service is extremely slow since they only have one person literally doing everything in the dining room. I mean VERY SLOW, so if you are... More

I used to go to Darvish regularly. This time that I was visiting Toronto with friends, I suggested to go there for lunch, and regretted it soon. My fesenjoon was cooked so bad that I decided to put it away although I was hungry. We found hair in the appetizer plate. I won't go there again.

I had mild hopes but no expectations for this place as I've had some very good (& expensive) Persian food in Toronto (at Banu on Queen St.) and overrated Persian food at Pomegranate Restaurant here. It was underwhelming to say the most, bland overcooked mush. I'm a vegetarian so didn't have the meat dishes but my friend and I sampled... More

Very good, well-presented food with an interesting menu. Alcoholic drinks also available. Friendly service. Home-cooking. Well patronised by locals - always a good sign. Will go there again and again when In Toronto

Very clean dining room although the chairs look a bit dated ; food was great: I had the koobideh minced beef skewers which were delicious. The open table wine was fine. The lady who is serving has some elegant and friendly demeanor. the only thing that has bothered me was the noise from the refrigerator chests in the dining room... More

Kind staff, very delicious food. Enjoyed a lot. We had lamb shish, baklava, chicken soup, eggplant and all were really good.

We went there with some colleagues and unfortunately the food was really bad. Small portion and the quality was horrible. The service was slow and not good as we were 7 people and they brought us a small basket of bread (The same size goes for solo customer!) and charged extra 15% for service! Overall , I would never ever... More

This small restaurant packs a lot of flavor into its authentic Persian dishes. How authentic? Well, there are shakers of ground sumac on the tables. We enjoyed lamb shank with herbs and savory chicken brochettes, preceded with a plate of delightful appetizers and followed by sharing a serving of house-made saffron ice cream. The husband (chef) and friendly wife (front... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
