The setting attempts to establish itself as elegant - however shouldn't save where it shows. Decided to order the dinner special including Peking Duck, Lobster and steam chicken. The Peking Duck didn't taste fresh almost as if it was partially cook, put aside and ready...for cooking when ordered. The steam wrapping was brought out 10 mins later as it should have brought immediately after the duck cutting was served. Lobster was stream a touch too long - a little toughness was detected. Boiled chicken - same problem slightly overcooked. All in all okay dinner. The biggest turn off was when the captain demand MORE TIP as the amount should be base after tax rather before tax. For a $200 meal (before tax) the difference was $ 2. Cash only for the special.More

10 of us came here last night for a birthday dinner. There were some hiccups at the beginning as they gave us a table way too small for our group. However, they quickly set up a larger table for us and the rest of the...meal went smoothly. The food was really good and the ingredients fresh. Prices are also quite reasonable. Service was pretty good as well. My favourite was the suckling pig, which you have to pre-order - the skin was really light and crispy. All the other dishes we had were executed very well, no complaints whatsoever. They allowed us to bring our own wine and BD cake, which was appreciated.More

I've had dinner at Crown Jewel several times before and the food was always very good. I went back with friends tonight and it was an excellent dinner experience. The Crispy Skin Chicken, Goose Feet with Mushroom, and, Sweet and Sour Pork were very well...prepared. We ordered Steam Black Grouper, and it was as good as any steam fish I've had in Toronto. The fish meat was so tender that it almost melted in the mouth, yet with texture. The sauce was so delicious that i had a full bowl of rice to savour the wonderful flavour, when I usually don't have rice for dinner. Now the star dish. The owner, Ming Li recommended Fish Maw with Bitter Melon. This dish came in a large clay pot with lots of broth, meaning we didn't have to order a soup. Wow, the broth was simply fantastic. There is no bitter tastes at all. The bitterness from the lemon simply blended in with the many ingredients; fish maw, shrimp, dried fish, bitter melon slices, mushroom, celery and other veggies, to end up with the most flavourful result. We finished every bit of ingredients because they were so good. Mr. Li mentioned that they are introducing new dishes and we will definitely come back to try them. The servers were friendly, pleasant and efficient.More

I have been back to Crown Jewel a few times this year, and it continued to provide great tasting food and very good service. Their signature dish, "Award Winning Plum Flavor Spare Ribs" was delicious as usual, and the meat was tender and juicy. The...Stewed Geese Feet was very tender and more tasty than other Chinese restaurants that serve this dish. The Soy Sauce Chicken was as good as other Cantonese restaurants in the GTA. We always ordered the Water Crest Soup and it has never disappointed us, the abundance of duck gizzards contributed to the great flavor. Because we had two vegetarians in our group, we ordered two veggie dishes. They were not my favorites. We have always left Crown Jewel very satisfied.More

I was impressed with the range of dim sum dishes as well as the quality of the dishes. This is coming from someone who has eaten a lot of dim sum! The pace of dishes coming out from the kitchen was superb so that you...always had piping hot food to consume. Enjoy!More

I have visited this place a total of six times during my trips to Toronto, three weeks and one week respectively in each of two consecutive years, including three times over three weeks last year and three days in a row in this year's short...trip of one week. The food at this place, whether dim sum or other dishes, in particular the seafood dishes, were excellent and also offered excellent value for money. This is my most favourite Chinese Cantonese restaurant in the Greater Toronto Area. The most amazing experience was when a senior waitress, Carol, asked me two weeks ago why I have not been there for such a long time since last year and actually was referring to the tables that I was occupying from my visits a year ago (out of the three times there last year, I was there for dinner on two consecutive nights, so perhaps that was the reason why she remembered me). As a reference point, one of my college buddies I dined with last year was so impressed by the quality of, and the value for money for, the food there that he decided to hold a birthday party earlier this year for his mom, celebrating her 90th birthday, there. There is however one room for improvement, the wall paper and carpet at this place need some quality maintenance.More

Up until early this year, for group dinner seeking slightly more sophisticated Cantonese fare, 'Crown Jewel - Steeles/Warden' had been one of our favored go-to venue. Unfortunately, our last visit there ended on a sad note!...the result of some dishes inundated with some rancid oil...after-taste! As such, I haven't been back since..... until last night. Based on the recommendations of a few foodie friends and relatives, who claimed that the quality of food has much improved due to some management changes. Our party of ten decided to take the plunge and give them a try. Overall, the meal was fairly well executed and enjoyable with some dishes worthy of high lighting. However, considering it was a busy weekend and the restaurant was quite busy, we were totally surprised to hear from our wait staff that so many popular and main staple items which we would like to order were SOLD-OUT!!....and it was only 7.00pm! They included ' chicken'!! Yup! a Chinese restaurant sold out on a key ingredient - chicken, on a weekend?! As well, most popular green leaf vegetables including Gai-Lan, Choy-Sum, the, in seasoned, Water Spinach....etc were also unavailable! What the hack?! Next came the fish....NOTHING except those mud-tasting Green Bass?! This scenario was made even weirder and more incomprehensible considering there is a huge Asian supermarket ' Foodie Mart ' located just a couple minutes walk from the restaurant!! Considering the night was still young, all they need to do was to send a bus-boy over and replenish some of the key ingredients and stock?! Besides, they do have refrigerators in the kitchen for any unsold items? No?!....?? Anyways, on a happier note, back to the food. We ordered: - Butterfly 'Pi-Pa' roasted duck (pre-ordered). Well seasoned but skin could be crispier. Overall still a pretty decent effort. - Stirred fry Filet Mignon cubes with Maggi sauce. Nice sear, well caramelized with lots of smokey wok-hay aroma. - Braised Goose web with fragrant Shitake mushroom and sauteed pea-shoots. IMO, overpriced and the dish is way under-seasoned. A waste of the off the bone tender web. - Braised Tofu with mixed veggie and oyster sauce. OK. - Stirred fry Razor Clams with XO-sauce. Nicely done despite the over spicy sauce with added chili overwhelmed the sweetness of the bi-valves a bit. - Stirred fry Chinese long stem lettuce with fermented bean curd - Steamed chopped up chicken wings with Goji berries on lotus leaves. - Pan fried pork short ribs with plum sauce glaze. Highlight of the evening. Finger licking good and tender. - Complimentary house desserts. Hopefully, we'll have better luck next time?!More

Last Saturday was still two weeks befor Chinese New Year, but the Manager offered to let us sample the banquet menu. Fairly typical menu with BBQ Suckling Pig, Shark's Fin Soup, Stuffed Crab Claws, Lobster, and Steamed Fish, Soy Sauce Chicken etc., Usually, you start...slowing down because the baquet food tend to be quite filling and greasy, and you stop eating after the 5th and 6th course and and everyone starts to pack the left over to take home. That night, the portions were quite adequate. The best way to describe the quality of the food was that the ten of us finished every single dish, and there were very little food left over. The service was excellent, one dish after another, no waiting, no rushing. The overall quality was VERY GOOD. Well done Chef.More

The staff efficiently served a large crowd (day after a wedding) with a variety of Dim Sum. The ribs were clearly the best. The corn soup was a disappointment. The shrimp dishes were tasty and the experts among us truly loved the pork buns.

After spending the past few days trying to finish off the huge amount of left-over food from last weekend's Chinese New Year party, my family and I all agree that, 'enough is enough' and decided to eat out tonight! We selected 'Crown Jewel' as our...dinner venue since it was highly touted by a number of foodie relatives and friends for their high quality food and service. Located in the same space once occupied by the iconic stalwart, but now defunct, ' Sam Woo Seafood', 'Crown Jewel' was frequently mentioned as a worthy replacement. Our small party of four arrived early at around 6.20 pm to a stark front of house with only one occupied table. However, by the time we settled down and ordered our food, the place was quickly filled up to at least 3/4 full! A great sign for a normally quiet Wednesday evening! We ordered the following based on recommendations from our friends and a most friendly, helpful and non-pushy manager ' Ming ' of the restaurant: 1) Sweet and Sour Pork with fresh pineapple - Whilst a large number of restaurants nowadays are churning out pretty decent rendition of this popular dish. The Crown Jewel version, IMHO, should be ranked among the top 3 in town. Really super crispy and crunchy, the piping hot pork nugget was covered with the right amount of perfectly sweet but not overly tangy glaze. The fresh, instead of canned, Pineapple was a nice touch. A master piece. 2) Stirred fry Beef with King Mushrooms and Scallions - This dish arrived at our table sizzling hot, exuding gorgeous aromatic, wok-hay smokiness. Both the meat and the mushrooms were nicely seared and caramelized. One of the better stirred fry beef dish in my book 3) Rose essence, premium top soy poached Free Range Chicken - My sister-in-law mentioned this 'Crown Jewel' version as one of the best in town. After experiencing an awesome and tasty version at Grandeur Palace only a couple of weeks ago. I made it an effort to order this dish so that a comparison can be made. The verdict?! 'Grandeur Palace' version, with more complexity and depth is still hands down the winner. However, Crown Jewel's version was no slouch either, easily surpassing offerings from their near competitors like Skyview, Dragon Boat, Yang's or The Emperor in taste profile. Fantasy Eatery's version was still the best. Pity the chef has moved on and disappeared. 4) Stirred fry filet of yellow fin Garoupa with yellowing chives and ' Choi Sum ' - Though the wok skill was clearly reflected by the finished product, however, IMO, the seasoning was a bit off. Rather than using ginger as focal point to bring out the flavor, the un-suitable and heavy-handed use of fried minced garlic by the chef and the absence of Chinese Rice Wine, sadly overwhelmed the delicate and sweet flesh of the fish. A pity! 5) Gone Chau Ngau Ho ( aka Fried Beef with Rice Noodles ) with premium top soy and yellowing chives - Seeing this rare rendition of this popular dish ( usually found in better restaurants in Hong Kong ), I cannot resist in ordering it. Similar to the Dim Sum, 'Har Gow', this is one product that is easy to prepare but super difficult to perfect. As such, out of curiosity I just have to check out the stirred fry wok-hay skill of the chef in executing this exercise! Though, in general, the result was a positive one, with minimum amount of residual grease, nicely caramelized and tender beef, crispy onions, bean sprouts and chives. However, for some unknown reason, the quintessential smoky wok-hay aroma was only barely noticeable?! Lastly, based on the caring, professional and friendly service received, a special honorary mention has to be given to the wait staff whose attentiveness really made our dinner a memorable one!....a rarity in most Chinese restaurant outings these days!More

The Crown Jewel is a small restaurant establishment that serves authentic Chinese gourmet dishes. Even on a Sunday, the restaurant was packed which is an indication of the quality of food. Even if you don't see an item on the menu, you can request for...it or preorder. I strongly recommend you making reservations if you plan on dining there. My mother in law celebrated her 71st bday with a banquet dinner. Everything tasted delicious but ended up costing $800 for 12 ppl. We had abalone, lobster, fresh fish and many other expensive dishes. It was hard to stomach $800 and the pictures are only a few items we ordered since the app only allowed 10 pictures. The serving staff tried their best by providing good service but they have a long way to learn about customer service. For a restaurant of that status, they didn't change my plates often and only served some dishes. Regardless of the service, we still dine here regularly.More
