This restaurant is one of Toronto's best kept secrets. My wife and I came with friends and ordered the guacamole and chips as a starter, and then each shared an El Sol platter for two. Service was quick and friendly. The guacamole was among the best I have tasted, even better than the one I make at home which always... More

El Sol enjoys a dedicated local clientele and a wider group of Mexican foodies for miles around. We have been a few times with our Canadian family and, although Mexican cuisine would not be at the top of our list, we did sample various dishes but there were always alternatives available. The restaurant is housed within an Alladin's cave of... More

This place has been part of the Danforth East community for some time. Among the trendy taco and Mexican restos in the city it’s nice to find a place that serves up Mexican old school. I’m also a fan of their margarita’s. Family run and friendly, if sometimes slow, service.

Been numerous times and the food is awesome. Fresh and authentic. The ambiance is that of a Mexican dinning room. The margaritas are outstanding. This is up there with the best Mexican cuisine in the city. You say you're in a hurry? Then don't go. This place is notoriously slow and confused. It's famous for this. Slow service is almost... I waited years to try this place. Every time I went to try it, it was around lunch time so the restaurant was closed. Finally this week a friend of mine and I checked it out, for a special occasion. What a disappointment!! We both had the fish tacos and there was not one good thing we could say. They... More

Went for dinner with friends and although between the four of us we had mixed opinions due to service, the mole was absolutely fantastic and I would try this place again. Walls and ceiling jam packed with Mexican art and masks. Back area is a little shop, front area for dining. Really unique and an authentic Mexican experience.

We go to El Sol every few months for a hit of excellent Northern Mexican food--much needed warmth in our cold winter weather. Yes, the service is slower paced than in many other restaurants--order an appetizer which comes quite quickly (the guacamole is great) and chat with your companion(s). Above all enjoy the relaxed experience. I had fantastic beef tostadas... More

I did not expect this restaurant to be that authentic and pleasant to dine in Service is slow but the food is so good and the portion is huge. Guacamole is a must with nachos as a starter. They have souvenir shop and wall full of antique and mexican novelties.

First of all - DO NOT go to El Sol if you are in a hurry. Service is slow, and you will get frustrated. Better to chose an evening when you have nothing else planned, then you can relax, enjoy a Mexican beer, and anticipate the great food. The food is good, and it seemed pretty authentic to me (not... Have eaten here many ties for years. Wanted to give an updated review. Nothing has changed, which is a very good thing! Food consistently high quality - fresh, as sit down or to take away. I highy recommend the meat or vegetarian platters to share for 2 people. Some people call it el-slow but I prefer waiting for quality food,... More

Staying in East York

Neighbourhood Profile
East York
East York includes a portion of old, industrial Toronto. Densely populated but incredibly safe, it boasts some of the city's earliest gardens and gardening clubs, attracting green thumbs everywhere. The tranquility of the Don Valley River area, which is rich with Toronto's oldest and tallest forests, is supplemented by the large ensemble of authentic and refurbished Edwardian homes, giving parts of East York allure. The other draw is for foodies: lovers of Bangladeshi fare will find authentic restaurants and markets in the area, with raw spices and desserts. East York also represents a lot of Toronto's Serbian food culture, and recently, has had an outcropping of solid microbrewery stops. For families, the science center is a favored weekend stop.
