I had two very different meals at this pub.The first was the 'Yorkshire Pudding' which was excellent. The second meal was a vegan Haggis. It was perfectly acceptable but not like a real Haggis so I was a little disappointed. However,my Vegan son described the meal as...More

And the food is terrific. If you want a casual meal with a perfect pint then this place is a must. Rustic and original decor. It used to be John McDonald office. Will definitely return. Highly recommend.

We have lived in Kingston for years, but had never tried the Sir John A although we do frequent many other pubs in the area. We found the decor a bit subdued. Not a lot of atmosphere compared with some others. We sat inside, but...More

Thanks for your review. I am sure you were aware that the building that the pub occupies was formerly the law offices of Sir John A. Macdonald from1849 to 1860. The interior attempts to give a feel of the middle of the nineteenth century when...More

The beers are great and the food is definitely a cut above the usual pub grub. But also stop by to soak in the history; this used to be the law office of Sir John A.Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister!

We visited this location last night and the food was out of this world, I would recommend this location as a must visit. Our server Sara was awesome very friendly and polite.

Dropped in for snacks and as it was cold the soup seemed a good choice. By far the best split pea and ham soup of my 60+year existence. Had a local beer for a perfect afternoon. Great staff, service and overall experience.

Went there with a small group. Most of us ordered the lamb shank with tarters and neeps. All tasted very good though the lamb portion was small - a shank is a lot of bone. But still a good deal for the money. Nice relaxed...More

I've been here a few times, usually in the late evening for a drink or two and some bar food (late night menu). Nothing too exceptional, service is adequate. It can also get quite loud. The bartender (or my server) didn't know how to make...More

Thanks for your note. I regret you were not able to get your mojito! Not something that we would get a lot of call for in a traditional "Scottish" pub. Despite that, other than having a lack of fresh mint at the bar, I am...More

To begin, the crowd in John A's is not what you would expect in a traditional Scotsman Pub. The music is usually club music, which is a big no no if a man wants to sit down and have a dram of whisky. The next...More

Thanks for your remarks about Sir John's Public House. Our daytime play list consists of traditional Scottish tunes, Canadian maritime favourites, popular music from the 60s to the 90s and some suitable contemporary music. In my opinion it is a wonderful selection to set the...More

Came here once before and found it disappointing. However the professional response by the manager who insisted that the review didn't reflect their personal standard made me feel like it deserved a second try. The second time around was much better. The food was more...More

I have enjoyed lunch at your establishment .......was very good. I have been invited to join a group there for lunch ......all former colleagues of the late Flora MacDonald,,,,,,,,in the room upstairs. How is the upstairs room accessed ? Is there a lift? Since I have recently been in hospital, I can not climb stairs.. Thanks. Shirley Fortier,

Sir John's is a cozy Scottish-Canadian Pub located in the building that was Sir John A. Macdonald's law office from 1849 to 1860. The pub takes you back in time with an affordable menu of home-cooked food inspired by Scotland but also featuring contemporary pub cuising. We make our own haggis and serve it as tasty fritters or as a topping on poutine. A good selection of imported and local beers with a healthy selection of Scotch Whiskies helps to wash everything down. In the evening the pub is a friendly meeting place where strangers and visitors are welcome. You might even see a few kilts. John A. himself has been known to stop by from time-to-time. A visit to Sir John's Public House is not just a fun experience but you will take away a bit of Canada's past when you part!
