Last night my girlfriend and I went for dinner at this restaurant and we were so beyond impressed. The staff were attentive, friendly, entertaining, & knowledgeable. The restaurant was so busy but not once did that reflect on our experience. The food was sublime .....top quality really, & it came in a timely manner. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The owner stopped by our table and we had a great conversation with her- she was really sweet. We had heard so many good things about le bistro by Liz , & we decided to check it out , we are soooo glad we did. We will be back 100%. Thank you for a great dining experience!!!More

I wanted to take my friends for brunch to celebrate their birthdays. We were seated as one of the first tables of the day. It’s week two of restaurants opening 100% capacity since Covid. After my friends and I finished our brunch we were chatting...and the waiter offered us our bill saying no rush to pay. Within five mins he was over with the machine. So I paid promptly. Then we stayed and chatted for another, maybe five mins. We had been there less than an hour and a half. The owner of the restaurant came over and asked us if we needed anything else or were we waiting for our bill. My friend had noticed the waiter speaking to her shortly before she approached us. So we are assuming she knew we had paid and she was trying to not so subtly ask us to leave. I completely understand how important it is to turn tables over quickly as many businesses have lost so much due to Covid. But perhaps rather than pretending that she didn’t know we had paid and basically telling us to leave. They may wish to tell patrons in advance that you have a set amount of time at the table before you have to go. I have experienced that advance notice at many restaurants during Covid. I thought this approach was rather rude. For that reason, I don’t think I’ll return. Lots of other restaurants in Halifax that would not treat patrons this way. So I think I’ll choose one of those in the future.More

As the title states, this is a very, very good restaurant. Have been dining in the Halifax/Nova Scotia scene for over thirty years. Dined at all the top restaurants in the province and le bistro always comes out on top. Nobody other than top michelin chefs in...Europe have executed the proper techniques of cooking mussels, scallops and calamari as this chef. Also, try the escargot le bistro style and the creme brulee, they will not disappoint.More

I recently went to lebistro by Liz in Halifax. I was recommended by a friend to go, so I made a reso for my mom's birthday. Upon arriving, the lady at the front ignored us and proceeded to respond to the incoming phone calls instead...of attending us, which I thought was a little rude. We sat, placed our orders (which we knew in advance ordering 2 apps, 2 entrees, and a kids meal for my daughter to start). They brought bread out which was good. Then the waitress came to take our plates and the after piling them and grabbing them with her hands (which I had watched her take other dirty plates right before us) and then put them right back down saying "oh yeah you guys will need these for your apps". My mom mentioned this was unsanitary, especially with covid going on. We said. nothing and waited. The apps came out which were fine, we ordered calamari and zucchini fries. The zucchini came with a curry sauce which my mom and put some on our plates to dip, so we wouldn't "double dip". The server came back to remove the dishes and rudely commented "oh looks like the curry sauce got a little out of hand!" as she took my mom's plate making her feel bad. It was insulting, almost as to say we were messy? Keep in mind its my mom's birthday, which they were aware of because I had called in ahead of time to let them know about her special day. When our entrees came, my daughter's grilled cheese was completed charred and burned on the edges and so she ate from just the middle. My mom and I had ordered the same, Assuming this would be a nice creamy dish, with the creamed mashed potatoes and scallops. I took a big bite only to crunch my teeth on what felt like a bone. I took it out of my mouth as the server was coming by to see how the food was. I showed her the hard piece that was from my dish and she took it of my hand with her finger and said "oh, ill take this to the kitchen". The lady from the front desk who ignored us originally, came over to our table and loudly announced that it was only a piece of shell from the scallops and that it was normal. I was mortified as I felt like the entire restaurant was staring at us. Later, the server came back to ask about desserts and I had to remind her of the birthday dessert that was offered to us when I booked the reservation. She came back with the dessert and it was not like the experience my friend had (she told me she had 3 staff come out for hers and sing happy birthday). Our experience was not like that, but cold and curt. When I asked for the bill, the lady from the front came back with her "loud voice" again and with a card saying "here's a free dessert for when you come and eat here next time!" thinking this was a remedy to the "shell" that was in my $30 entree. They did not discount anything from the bill, and instead embarrassed us. I paid and left a tip for the server (which I really shouldn't have) and left the card (which was more of an insult than anything). I will NOT be returning to this restaurant EVER.More

We stopped in for a date night dinner. It was a wonderful experience. The atmosphere there is sublime, felt instantly happy and at peace. The food was outstanding and the wine selection wonderful. The service was all around superior. Everyone went out of their way,...including our hostess (manager?) I would especially like to give a shout out to our bartender Matt, he was so friendly and attentive and was multitasking roles :) Our server Shiona was lovely and provided exemplary service, beyond attentive and thoughtful. Thank you, we will definitely be back.More

We joined another couple for dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in the city, Le Bistro. We were celebrating a special occasion and both Liz and her wonderful staff went above an beyond to help make the day and meal extra special. The food...was excellent- the French onion soup is the best I have had and my pan friend haddock was perfectly cooked and extremely tender. The other thing I want to commend the bistro staff on is their commitment to the safety of both their staff and their patrons. Despite being in the middle of a pandemic with restrictions on in house dining in place - the ambiance was unaffected and we felt extremely safe. The place was spotless, social distancing was strict, the staff we extra careful. Masks were worn by every staff person and patron not seated at their table. 10/10 for me, well done Liz!More

A friend once described the telling characteristic of great wine: Surprising. You taste and instantly you are caught up in the multiple facets of the experience. It moves past predictable. Sometimes though surprising is not a good thing and one reaches for comfort in the...predictable. Bistro menus are most often just that: classic dishes executed well in an authentic relaxed atmosphere. Entering le Bistro one is immediately thrown off a little by the decor. Is it Bistro chic or odd? Think Montreal terrace meets Mom's diner. The service was very much the in the fold of the latter. No pretensions here! You are part of the family as soon as you arrive. The menu features many of the dishes you expect to see but also throws in a little pizza and asian influence, crowd favourites perhaps but not predictable. Wine selection was reasonable and very affordable. Partner opted for the French onion soup and it was very good, as you might expect from this time polished staple. Our other choices were not as satisfying. The seafood crepe was more of a meagre phyllo crust for a thin béchamel. The scallops and shrimp were well cooked but the vidalia onion was raw. My beef bourguignonne was mostly tender with a few tough pieces and sweet carrot but I was surprised to find an inedible partial ear of corn and a single undercooked but aged Brussel sprout. Dessert was very good. A wonderfully textured ginger cake with caramel, pecans and whipped cream. Predictable and comforting. Le Bistro wants to be just that. To a large extent it was.
