First visit to this location. The premises were tiny and cramped with minimal tight table setup.
Service was quick and pleasant.
This is Newfoundland and the Cod and Chips, the fish was very small portion and could have been double in size!
Ordered a double hamburger plate and were very satisfied with that!
Ordered scallops and chips and were pleased with the portion!
Even though the food was very good, $105.00 for 4 people was pricey for what we got!

This was another "recommended to us" place to eat on our trip. The service was very friendly and fast. We all had cod and chips and there was enough to feed us all twice over. The fish was well cooked and did not seem greasy and mostly batter like other people have complained about. There was not enough room for dessert so we skipped that. The local beer was very good and the whole meal was reasonably priced. We chose the "one piece of fish" item off the menu and that was plenty for each of us. There are other choices on the menu that are not fish and chips.

We stopped for lunch at the 9 Freshwater Road location in St. John’s. The staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered the fish and chips while my partner ordered the chicken wings. The food was delivered quickly, no problems with service. After one bite of fish, I knew I could’t eat another. All I could taste was oil! My partner said the chicken wings were the same, just a hot oily mess, and completely unfit for consumption. We had already paid for our meals when we ordered them, but we decided to leave the food uneaten, and go elsewhere for lunch. A staff member noticed us leaving and asked if everything was ok, I replied that we couldn’t eat the food because it was too greasy. She then started SHOUTING for the manager, so that everyone in the restaurant was staring at us. Not bad enough to serve horrible food, let’s embarrass the customer too. We walked out with no refund, and we won’t be back.

We had it ordered and the grease was actually seeping through the bag! The fish had no taste and was dry,;the chips were burned the onion rings hard and the inside of the wings literally looked boiled while the outside had a thick beer batter and literally was sopping in grease! Awful

The food was fast and the service was friendly. The fish was crispy on the outside soft in the middle. We recommend you try the snarl poutine (poutine with meat and onions instead of cheese).

Ches’s have had a great record for great food, for many years and I doubt if much is going to change that.

Issues by grossness factor:
1. Hair cooked into the batter
2. So much grease, not really cooked until crisp
3. Two onion rings were filled with onion outer layer (you know, the part that is like string and can't be bitten through)
Horrible, horrible - my recommendation would be don't visit this location, try another where they take care in the food they serve. Shameful experience for 30 dollar delivery order.

For a "special" the Cod Bites ain't much of one! Over priced for a meal that stopped serving Dressing with this meal...it's now extra cost! Fries under cooked! Gravy greasy, watery! The so-called Cod Bite was 65% batter & 35% Cod & dried out, like it had been cooked for previous person's meal! It's been awhile since we had Ches's & Its gonna be awhile before I have it again! Cheaper to cook my own! At least I'll actually portion out more fish then crust!!

Not a fancy place, but dont let that fool you. Really great Fish & Chips as well as Tiger Shrimp & Fish. Super fresh, great tasty and fresh batter, not greasy at all. Perfect cook on them too.
Second time since my last two visits to St-Johns. Will not be my last.
Attentive staff always smiling.

Super friendly staff, lots of interaction with kids. Fish n chips was great as usual. If visiting NL for first time ches’s offers great fried fish. However if fish is out of season they may only have frozen, its still great m, but not as good as the fresh stuff.

Stayed in the area so had breakfast here 3 mornings. They were excellent! Toast done just right, eggs cooked to order and sausage was tasty. The servers were funny, friendly and attentive. The dining area was clean and tidy. I would recommend for breakfast and the menu looked good for other meals as well.

First time ever to Newfoundland. This restaurant was recommended to us very highly. We did not go away disappointed. I found the prices were a tad high but food was scrumptious although portion size was small. Not sure if this is truth or tale but we were told this restaurant does not sure their fish unless it is yesterday or today's catch. Nothing like fresh seafood. You cannot leave this restaurant with trying the coconut cream pie. The best I have ever eaten; simply the best!!! The service was also great! We were made to feel completely at home and given a certificate from Ches' with our name and our servers name. Nice little keep sake.

Ches's is one of the most delicious places I have eaten in St. John's. Their chips are amazing! My chicken sandwhich is always perfect as well. They also offer you a little free cupcake after your meal. But you should also try the five star bar for dessert. It is the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Just the right size so that it doesn't make you stuffed but leaves you with your sweet craving fufilled. The staff is always friendly and make you feel at home. You gotta give it a try, you won't regret it!

Used to get big helpings and service was very fast and staff were friendly but portions are quite small now and sometimes very greasy. When ordering fish (Cod) the batter is usually thicker than the cod. Chips have been frequently heated before serving.
