We had a vegetarian platter. Portions food seemed a bit chintzy and most of the platter items were not memorable. The honey wine had a weird after taste, so I drank only a couple of sips. Service was mediocre. I had to ask staff to refill our water because after having an empty glass for over 20 minutes, I gave... More

We had dinner here (2 friends and I) to try something new. I had never been to an African/Ethiopian restaurant before but always wanted to try. I did some research and found mostly positive reviews for Harambe and I am now part of that group! I was really surprised (because I didn't know what to expect). We shared a large... More

We love Ethiopian food. On our last trip to Whistler we stopped in Vancouver for dinner. The platter portions were good and the food tasted delicious. We left satisfied, ready to begin our holiday. Unfortunately, that night I awoke with terrible stomach pains and spent the next 24 hours vomiting. The sickness stayed with me for several days. My wife... More

Of the many Ethiopian restaurants in this area, our neighbourhood, this is our favorite. Ask for their honey wine and chef's recommendations for sharing plate. On a recent visit they recommended that we try the fish stew along with our shared variety and it was all delicious. We are celiac and will notice if the gluten free food is truely... More

This was a pleasant surprise! 20 of us ladies went in our limo bus to surprise a girlfriend for her 70th, and we all dressed somewhat in animal prints. Reservations are recommended, especially for a group our size. I've never been to an African/Ethiopian themed restaurant, but when my friends and I went here, we tried various items on the... More

This is a good place when with a group so you can try each other's dishes or get the combo plates. The decor is inviting as well as the location on Commercial Drive.

We arrived with a reservation and it took them 20 minutes to come for the drinks order. After we ordered the food it took one hour and a half for it to show up; in the meantime the waitress would try to avoid making eye contact. The food was great and very tasty but they definitely need to hire additional... More

We love Ethiopian food and have dined at many places in Canada. We arrived on a Saturday night about 6:00PM and we seated right away. Within in minutes the place was full and most of the guests had reservations. Our food was brought to.us in a timely manner and the meat was nice and hot. Very good food and atmosphere... More

This was a pleasant surprise! I'm not one for very exotic food, but when my friends and I went here the first time, we tried the special combination with the meat and vegetables, it was sooo delicious! The combination of flavors was unbelievably delicious. I have since returned a few times, whenever I crave Ethiopian food. The combination with just... More

Staying in Commercial Drive

Neighbourhood Profile
Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, also called "The Drive," comprises of twelve sauntering blocks of modest and unfussy counter-culture. Straddling the line between sophisticated and unadorned, it is favoured by students, artists, writers, designers, and start-ups, and suffused throughout with a healthy off-beat counter-culture. The kind of neighbourhood which well-springs thought-revolutions and has the odd bit of self-aware graffiti, Commercial Drive has resisted gentrification in favor of continuing to build a thriving den of affordable multiculturalism. Once known as Vancouver's "Little Italy," it has also been the immigration point for Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Portuguese to the city. The resulting hodgepodge makes for poetry readings in espresso cafes, social debates in early-open bakeries, and eco-activism posters pinned up in the many multi-ethnic markets in the area. Commercial Drive is where you go to feel like a local, and if you have them, bring the kids – The Drive has a number of bookshops, toy stores, and attractions to get them involved too.
