We went to El Tipico more than once during both our spring and fall trips to Oaxaca. It's a wonderful local place near Llano Park with a different special every day (although they seem to have dishes with mole negro, mole amarillo, mole verde, and mole rojo every day. We've tried many dishes and everything was delicious. Remember it closes... More

Recommended by a former colleague, now local ex-pat, who we dragged along with us. True to his word, El Tipico provided very good food and excellent service. NOTE: they close at 6pm; so don't go sniffing around there at 8pm with your blood sugar down in your sneakers ( like we did on our first attempt).

Very nice family owned neighborhood restaurant near barrio de Jaletlaco. We ordered the Oaxacan sampler plate that came with chile rellenos, enchiladas con mole, chichironies, chorizo, and other items with three sauces (quacamole, green sauce, and red sauce). All food was excellent and the margaritas were the best we had the whole week in Oaxaca.

We were a group of 6, we got different dishes all of them really good. The service was very friendly but really slow. Prices are high based on what you receive. Nice building. I will come back soon to try another dish.

El Tipico is tucked away on a side street a block away from Llano Park and near the lovely Jalatlaco neighborhood. Local friends in the know say it is one of the best local restaurants in Oaxaca that serves typical home-cooked food. After four months in Oaxaca, I chose this restaurant to have my last meal before heading back to... More

We thought the place really looked nice, lots of flowers, a sheltered garden to eat in if you want, and very clean looking. The hostess (owner?) was very attentive and friendly. But we found the food to be just average (i.e. I guess like the name -- tipico). Prices were just ok too (75 - 100 ala carte). Though they... More

Ask for the menu del dia which features traditional dishes of Oaxaca. There are always several choices of rich, authentic cooking. Don't forget to start off with some typical appetizers. Ask the servers for advice. Take your time and enjoy. This is not a tourist spot, it's frequented by Oaxacans who appreciate home-style cuisine and a good deal. Before going... More
