Gorgeous view, really good food and a very friendly Ukrainean lady who help us navigate thru menu and provide more information about place history. I recommend local wine. Price are very affordable, Overall it was a perfect service.
This has to be one of the best Taverna’s in the area. If you are looking for high quality, fresh & delicious food then head here. It’s a far cry from the dismal array of restaurants adjacent to the beach. Here you can sample the...local dishes. I recommend the sharing plates, “mezze” as you can order a few and share. The portions are very big. The host is warm and friendly and happy to make suggestions.More
Had dinner there with our local friends who also recommended this taverna - not surprisingly. The view is magnificent, and the hosts are very welcoming and hospitable. There is a wide range of food, but it is always best to ask for daily recommendations as...these will get you the best of the best. Combine it with typical local wine, and there is nothing left to be desired. Da capo in September '20.More
We had dinner at this Taverna two nights ago. When we arrived, we thought we were the only patrons until we espied another couple in a corner. We were completely charmed by the austere al fresco dining room overlooking the nearby hills and, in the...distance, the Sea of Crete and Réthymno. The Greek music was playing and we were hungry!
Our server told us what was, and what was not, available so we ordered from the availables. The pork steak, Loukaniko, fried potatoes and fava. The fava was the very best we had ever had. The pork chop was delicious and the fried potatoes, well, it's Crete, so you always expect them to be delicious.
We greatly enjoyed our dinner and especially the serenity of the courtyard, low lighting and Greek music. All these components truly made our dinner quite magical and memorable.
I would highly recommend Kastro Mesi as a place to be savored and remembered!More
Great food, nice setting, good service, good value (especially as the euro/pound exchange is very bad at the moment). Wide variety of food to suit all tastes. There is a children’s menu as well. Great raki which they make themselves, the lemon is particularly nice...(yes really!)
We went two nights on the trot it was so nice and even though they were booked up on the second night, they squeezed us in.More
A really fab choice of food here, great value and a wonderful setting, meatballs in tomato sauce was really nice, my daughter had the shrimp which was huge and there were 5 of them, good service and very reasonable prices, parking is awkward though as...it's on a steep hill and narrow, the only thing I would say is that all the dishes come with chips and rice and no other options but it was really nice.More
We found this restaurant some years ago and have been coming back every time we visit Crete. Kastro is placed very nicely in the middle of the olive fields and have a beautiful view out over the coastline and far from the overrun touristtraps. The...food is traditional cretan and greek and usually with a couple of "mothers recipe" dishes off the menu which are always something to consider. Also fresh seafood typically grilled in the stoneoven can be recomended.More
Have visited annually to Agios Dimitrios the village below for the last 10 or so years and this is the first time we’ve come to the restaurant. Great little place in lovely Mesi. Greeted by and served by friendly waitress who we believe is also...the owner & cook. Fairly extensive menu but not everything available as I guess it’s seasonal etc. but definitely enough to chose from. We walked up and arrived around 8pm so got to watch the sun set over the sea which was memorable. Sat under the impressive sprawling tree which acted as shade and also had lots of lights which lit up when it got dark, so quite a romantic atmosphere. Ordered food which arrived within 15mins. All the meats and Greek salad were very good, as were the fried zucchini. Would come again and have recommended to others. Thank you!More
If you want to sample some genuine local Crete food in a classic taverna in the Crete hills then try here. Recently stayed at a villa in Mesi , which is about a twenty minute walk from this taverna and it was superb. The food...and service was excellent and we were made to feel very welcome. We ate outside under an old tree in the courtyard while looking out over the distant sea views. Plenty of good food and wine flowed and we had a really nice evening. The classic cheese pie starter was worth any walk over the hills to get there. Best wishes Anthony and JaciMore
Nice place in a typical greek hamlet on the hills south from Rethymno. Family runned by the lady-owner who cooks and serves . You eat outside in a cosy and shaded garden with nice view of the countryside all around. Good food at good price....We ate there 2 times in 3 days!More
