We where in the area and thought we would pop in for a burger or steak. Plenty of seating inside , outside was mostly full, being a Sunday night. Mostly young staff , relatively friendly. We went for the bistro menu (that was limited as well, not many choices for a nice hot or filling meal). Limited bottled beer or... More

Was looking forward to this... but.... Decided on the banquet. Smashed cucumber and radish, and dish of heirloom tomatoes were Ok, but not remotely asian. Next two courses arrived quickly, by 30 mins after we arrived we had five dishes on our very tiny table. Wontons were not interesting at all. The tofu with its sauce - all very soft... More

The pub is nicely decked out in side. The food is great and the staff are very friendly, certainly worth a visit.

The Ricky and Pinky restaurant serve contemporary Asian food at the Builders Arms Hotel in Fitzroy. The waitstaff are friendly and professional. We enjoyed the food and the drinks. We think there is not enough noise absorbing features at the restaurant because it is quite noisy and a bit hard to talk to each other

Having seen an excellent report in Gourmet Traveller we decided we had to go. The renovation has opened up the space and provides a vibrant atmosphere and a great vibe. We ordered dishes to share, 6 between the 3 of us. The eggplant salad was a real treat, so too the dumplings and wonton. For mains we had the salt... More

This is a large old pub/hotel building in the heart of Fitzroy. We had dinner there with friends between Christmas and New Year. The place has recently been refurbished and the many smaller rooms/zones have been combined into one huge space. It was noisy and hard to have a conversation as a result. The food was okay – arrived on... More

Staff - brilliant, helpful with kids, friendly. Food was the best we had in melbourne. Four of the dishes we asked to be repeated. Wine knowledge also fantastic. One lovely guy went out of his way to get an Icecream our 4yo loved. We booked and whilst it wasn't booked out when we visited, it was a Tuesday. I'd book... More

Went here for an evening meal on a Sunday after having a couple drinks there on the Saturday. Just ate in the bar, so can't comment on their restaurant, although I think one of the dishes was on both menus. There was a limited menu in the bar and to be honest for a so called gastropub neither meals we... More

Called into the Builders Arms to check out the new look and we were not disappointed. The renovation is sharp and effective. We called in for a quiet drink and were surprised with the limited beer and wine list in the bar. Only a minor problem but an important refinement.

Thank Owen C

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
