We were very much looking forward to a wonderful evening of fine dining. The reality couldn't have been more of a let down. The duty manager was a hot air balloon. A lot of talk, but not enough action. Taking away cutlery and napkins when...still needed, 20 minute waits for a beverage or butter to accompany the bread served with the soup. And one of the waiters was so lost, that I eventually helped him to find the right table for the drink order he had on his tray. Then the food. The bread served with my soup was a store bought part baked bread roll that had not been finished off properly. My main was halibut with skin on. The first round, my dish was completly cold and the fish was underdone. After sending it back to the kitchen, the dish was at least warm. But the skin of the fish had not been seared, so it was soft and rubbery. Instead of nice and crispy. Also, the sugar snaps had not been deveined, the samphire had woody end and the cream-chive sauce had no flavour what so ever. We were already so disappointed by the evening up to that point that we left without any dessert. On the receipt the halibut was priced £2 higher than on the menu. And the 'right' price of £29,95 for a mediocre dish is way too high.More

We ate here four times while staying two nights at the Dunalistair hotel suites. The breakfasts offered good variety and an interesting range of cooked and continental choices. Decent coffee. Excellent poached eggs but eggs Benedict is traditionally made with ham not back bacon! As...with many a UK hotel the bread for toast was of the most dire sliced variety and served with foil wrapped portions of cheap butter. Dinner is from an a la carte menu with some interesting choices but was repeated exactly on both nights. The fish was decent but very rich. The lamb rack was actually cutlets that were none too tender. Steaks were of moderate quality but served with a thin peppercorn sauce (no choice) and thin fries. All in all the cooking lacked finesse and eating here does not reflect value for money as a result. The Covid excuses, while perhaps valid, are becoming tiresome at expensive prices.More

We were given a gift of an overnight in a luxury suite with a 7 course taster menu. In the week leading up to our overnight we phoned to book a time for our dinner reservation only to be told that the 7 course taster...menu wasn't available due to 'The Library' being closed (this was where they served the 7 course taster experience) We were disappointed and a bit annoyed that the hotel hadn't informed us of this, however, the hotel offered us £140 credit to spend on dinner and drinks from the A la Carte menu. We had a look at the menu online and thought there was a varied selection of food so we decided to go ahead with our booking. We had a beautiful suite, really pleased with it. We got ready for dinner, our table was booked for 8pm. The restaurant was half full. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and perused the menu but this wasn't the menu that was advertised online,....half of the dishes were missing. It was a much smaller menu. What was supposed to be a wonderful overnight experience left us feeling somewhat disappointed 😒More

We had a dinner bed and breakfast package at Dunalastair Hotel. The restaurant is in a nice space but it seems to result in staff walking long distances to the kitchen and bar. We were not offered bread despite having side plates and saw other...tables receive bread. Our starters were fine but then it went downhill. I had steak which was very tough and I heard similar comments from nearby tables. My wife had salmon which was almost white, we have never seen salmon that colour. The creme brulee dessert was poor, strange texture. When our bill was received there were issues with what was included in the DBB package but this was swiftly rectified. We were 2.25 hours for the 3 courses. Felt sorry for the staff and heard from a local that there were staffing issues which seems to be a common issue at the moment.More

Got a call initially to say one of our three nights was cancelled as they had a wedding now booked in. It was a case of lump it or leave it. Managed to get another hotel for one night as whole holiday was planned. We...were offered a drink and upgrade instead as a peace maker. I asked instead for a free 3 course meal of which was accepted. It came to the meal and we were blatantly ignored. It took nearly 60 minutes before we got our main course. We finished it and sat for 45 minutes with empty plates in front of us whilst other couples came, ordered, were served and left. We eventually gave up and went. In the afternoon we went to the bar for a drink after a long walk. There was no barman around and the manager said he did not know how to make a Gin so we couldn't have it. Second day at the hotel and we didn't have any used products in the room replaced that we had used. When we checked out the meal was charged to us so luckily I had the email to show it was on the house. The hotel was full and basically they were getting as much money as possible with very little staff.More

Menu was limited due to only one chef on the night we stayed. Food was good but expected more from a 5 star restaurant.

As with everywhere we have been this week again, lack of staff seems to be the issue so, with renewed optimism we arrived here and looked forward to our first meal. Choice of booking times so 6.45pm seemed the best on offer. Choice of 4...starters, 3 mains and 3 deserts. The wine we choose was out of stock but we did get a bottle, eventually. 2 and a half hours later we were finished, not a massive issue but we did feel for the people arriving at 9.15!! They may still be there when we go down for breakfast! The food was ok but the worst banoffee pie we have ever been served....the rest was ok but a very long wait for not too much! Side plates with no bread in offer.....work created as staff continually walked passed uncleared tables empty handed...just saying.....More

The restaurant cooking standard was poor compared with the overall high quality of the rooms and excellent service both front of house and in the restaurant. Almost every item in the meals was overcooked. For example scallops (labelled "King" but small "queens") were so overcooked...they were like rubber. A pigeon breast was cooked to the colour and texture of shoe leather. A haunch of venison had clearly been sliced before resting under a salamander and therefore dry and again "over". Same again with a steak. Even the breakfast bacon was hard as it had been standing for long. There was a great effort to look "high end" with edible flowers etc. but this does not compensate for the cooking skills. Overall they have an unchanging and extensive menu - which I think was part of the problem. The actual elements were good quality but to serve the number of covers they clearly had to precook many items and hold them before plating on order. I would suggest a smaller, variable menu and cooking to order. This would then come up to the excellent features and service of the Hotel.More

The food at the restaurant was truly exceptional. We ended up eating there every day for our whole stay. My favourite item from their menu was the home made crusty rolls which were always served warm

We had dinner on Tuesday. Our order was taken promptly and the starters arrived quickly. However over 50 minutes after finishing our starter, our main course had still not arrived. We asked our waitress to find out what was causing the hold up. The main...courses then arrived about 10 minutes later but my duck, which I had ordered medium, was red raw (our waitress agreed it was very rare and certainly not medium) and my husband’s chicken was sitting in a pool of water that seemed to be leaking from the soggy risotto. For dessert I ordered sticky toffee pudding and my husband the cheese plate. Well it was the worse sticky toffee pudding I have ever had. Two pieces of hard cake covered in an extremely thick, lumpy, congealed sauce. Really dreadful! The waitress deducted the cost of the additional supplement for the cheese plate and our side order of chips but we were not there to make a saving of £9 but to have a nice meal and a pleasant evening. So disappointing. Not what you expect from a 5 star hotel.More
