We planned on eating at Ainoya on a Sunday evening. A few days before, I phoned to make the booking and was clear that the booking was for “this Sunday”. When we arrived we were told that our booking was for two weeks’ time and...they did not have a table for us. The staff member was not only unapologetic, but kept on insisting that he was right and we were wrong. I have never been treated so discourteously. He left us no option but to leave. Happily we had a wonderful meal at the Thai restaurant around the corner.More

Had dinner here with a group (7). Nice ambience, feels like Japan. We were seated in a separate room away from most other diners, with a pleasant view over a Japanese garden and then the suburb in the distance. Friendly reception, felt like they were...happy to see us (even though it was quite busy). Many waiters wore masks, which I appreciated, and sanitiser on the table. Helpful guidance on the ordering. We had share edamame (cooked just right), and a share sushi plate and a share sashimi plate (good selection, all was very good but the sashimi scallops were outstanding - very fresh, succulent and tasty). Mains were good but not outstanding. The chicken karaage udon noodles were a little bland, but the chicken was well cooked with a nice crunch, and a good portion. The tempura plate was excellent - hot and lightly crunchy. Good sized serves. Good selection of meals for gluten-free. The wine selection is average, but there is a small but excellent selection of beer, and a wide selection of sake. The Umeshu (sweet plum wine) is reasonably priced. Friendly and happy service.More

I came here about seven years ago and thought was better value for money then. I thought the main courses were a little small. The waitresses wearing masks is also unnecessary.

In the 10 years that I lived at Kirribilli, I went here as often as I could afford to. It is an excellent Japanese restaurant in a traditional style. The sushi is excellent. I can also strongly recommend the dumplings and gyoza. It is expensive...but all good Japanese restaurants are. They are confident of the value of what they have to offer.More

We've returned to Ainoya on multiple occasions - the food is always fresh and delicious, the service friendly and efficient. The menu items are not overly complex, the chefs clearly prioritise flavour and freshness, which is fantastic. The restaurant itself has a lovely atmosphere, and...the price point is extremely reasonable for the high quality product. Can't recommend more highly!More

With the plethora of new restaurants of all persuasions opening weekly in Sydney, it is easy to neglect favourites that have consistently been excellent over the years. This is the certainly case with Ainoya where I dined with friends celebrating their anniversary on a Saturday...night, not having eaten there for a while.. Every dish was again immaculate in appearance and taste. The service is professional, courteous and knowledgeable yet friendly and we were welcomed as old friends. The wine list is good, sake menu great. We really enjoyed: - Gyu Tataki (beef carpaccio, old favourite) - Tuna Tataki (seared tuna sashimi – WOW!) - Seaweed salad - Sirloin Wagyu perfect medium rare - Grilled Duck Fillet (breast, order it medium rare) Quiet restaurant, despite being full while we dined. Recommended!More

Food is delicious and service is excellent. We tried a variety of items on the menu and all were excellent (Nasu Dengaku was impressive). The restaurant is nice, clean and reasonably spacious. Service was very good. The waitresses were very attentive and obliging. Everything that...was spilt was promptly cleaned up (not just our table). Good atmosphere and the staff are very accommodating.More
