I am not a huge fan of meat- I never used to crave it much at all. My mother used to cook steak all of the time- and every time she made it I would think, “why do people like this stuff when you have...to chew every bite for twenty minutes?” My brother would squirrel his away in napkins that found their way into the trash. All eyes were on my every movement. I was stuck chewing most of the evening. In the 80’s you couldn’t claim you just didn’t like things. Dinner had to be eaten.
Pork, I have always loved. I love pork so much that when we used to visit the pigs at the farm when our kids were little, I would be licking my chops. They smell delicious to me even when they smell terrible.
Chicken I love when it’s smoked.
So when we had approximately $200 left over on our last day in Tokyo, I thought, let’s give Blackhole a try. Years of watching Iron chef made me crave the fatty beef of Japan.
It was seriously the best beef I have ever had. Since my childhood, I’ve had Chateau Briand and Filet mignon at Fancy DC restaurants. This was a gazillion times better. I ate all of mine after I graced it with about a minute on the grill. My daughter cooked every piece of hers til it was well done. We finished all of it, ordered more (too much overall fat intake after second go round, we were feeling stuffed)- finished that too. Then for the next four months, I obsessively thought about the beef there. This was one of my top four meat experiences ever. They are: luau pork in Maui, Black Hole beef (all of it), homemade smoked chicken which my friend smoked, and quail from I think Christiana Campbell’s in Williamsburg, VA (although it may have been from Kings Arms).
Highly recommend! Although I wish they offered more vegetables.More
