Thanks to our concierge's recommendation, we had our last dinner in Tokyo at this traditional tempura restaurant at the Hilltop Hotel, near the JR Ochanomizu Station, which is accessible via the JR Chuo and Sobu lines. The hotel is reputedly very popular with Japanese writers/novelists and journalists. The restaurant is known for its tempura. Apart from the a la carte... More

Yamanoue is situated on the ground floor of the Hilltop Hotel, and is a traditional tempura restaurant, which uses old ice-chests, rather than freezers. Tempura is beautifully-prepared, and you have a choice of course-menus or ala carte items. Of course, you can go for a course-menu and top it up with a few more items from the ala carte list.... This is the main restaurant of the Yamanoue Hotel, a small hotel with real charm. The tempura and service are very good, but I feel you're paying slightly over the odds because of the character and history of the hotel (which was a favourite haunt of literary types such as Yukio Mishima). If the food is your primary interest, I'd... More

This famous and rather highly acclaimed Tempura restaurant happened to be below my anticipation. Located in the traditional and historical Yamanoue (Hilltop) Hotel, the restaurant is considered to be quite exclusive. Whilst the volume of food served (we ordered the mid-price ranged set menu) was quite plentiful, the quality and taste does not live up to expectation for a restaurant... More

Yamanoue is a small restaurant offering authentic tempura in set menu as well as a-la-carte. A large rectangular bar is built in the dinning area where customers were seated. A wide range of seafood and seasonal vegetables were available, we had an excellent selection from the menu which is in both Japanese and English. Beverages were offered at the restaurant... More

After hearing that the Michelin stared chief kondo originally came from yama no ue. I decided to come for a experience at one of the older tempura places in Tokyo. It is located on the first floor of the hotel, the place is old style with a quaint boutique feeling to the place. But i thought i was in trouble... More

It is one of top class restaurant in Tokyo. Employee's are like well trained butler or maid. Their service is fatally gentle. For example, when you enter the restaurant, you would see all the employees stand up in front of you and say "Good afternoon, sir!" I ordered a Tempura Course(It has 5 courses and the cheapest one cost you... More

I don't usually like the 100% sesame oil tempura, but Yamanoue was absolutely brilliant. They use 2 vats at 2 different temperatures to elevate frying to pure art. The quality of the ingredients is astonishing. Frying only seems to make the vegetables brighter and cleaner, and fish scales turn into sculpture. We've been to a lot of famous places (Kondo,... I hope I am reviewing the correct location in Tokyo Midtown Roppongi. I went to the place tonight craving prawn tempura. The restaurant is very pretty and the bar for those sitting single is very nice with a pretty view. I like the Midtown location, however I was really thrown by the price. One extremely small prawn the size of... More

Excellent tempura sets - albeit a little pricey. I particularly enjoyed the small onions, prawn heads and kariage. Ro set for JPY7,700 per head
