Very picturesque house. Unfortunately I was given a Western style table so I did not get to see their Japanese seatings. The dinner is a set menu. First you get a couple of appetizers, followed by six kushiage (deep fried sticks of about anything), all different. Then you can order more kushiage by 3 or 6 (again, different) and finally... Hantei offers gorgeous setting; its architecture (registered building), neighborhood, and the food presentation. it's very well maintained and presented. It is a fine example of older architectural style still used. The problem here is the price and the food. Their food (kushiage, deep-fried vegetables on stick) is tasty, but it is pricey. When I went, I was only able to... More

This restaurant was across the street, so we decided to give it a try, also based on high ratings on trip advisor. However, we thought the service was only average, food was not very good and certainly seriously overpriced. Although the building was interesting and old, this did not make up for the food. I would not go here again.

A fine restaurant that serves kushiage (ingredients skewered and then deep-fried) with a somewhat modern twist. Had dinner here, and only a set menu was available - or rather a progression of set menus. First a "starter menu" - 2 starters and 6 skewers as chosen by the chef; if you are still hungry afterwards you can get the second... More

Traditional style Japanese restaurant. Sitting on the floor, nice atmosphere. Quite expensive for small portions. Taste was good. Cockroach on the neighbouring table caused quite a fuss.

Apart from being a fabulously photogenic building and tourist attraction in Nezu the restaurant itself serves a great variety of meat, fish and vegetable kushiage (assorted skewers) at very reasonable prices in very atmospheric premises. The building is a converted warehouse from the 1700s. It used to have a somewhat stuffy reputation but is now entirely gaijin (foreigner) friendly and... More

We went here for lunch on a wet miserable day. Great service, atmosphere, food and beer! Highly recommend! This is definitely worth visiting.

We got a table on the second floor and it can surprise because you have to sit on the ground on a pillow. You can choose to stay on the 1st floor if you want to sit on a normal chair, because it can be difficult to stay in the lotus position for an hour. Anyway, the diner was perfect... More

This was a fun way to learn about a new cuisine. Kushiages are panko encrusted deep fried products. For our ¥3000 fixed-price lunch we received 8 kushiages (including a delicious corn popsicle and beef and seafood kushiages), two appetizers, fresh vegetables miso soup and a yuzu pannacotta. Highly recommend, especially if you will be near Ueno Park.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
