- Archana SNew Delhi, India13 contributionsThe Humayun's Tomb World Heritage is an experience - fills you up with pride, calm and so much admiration for one's history and city. This must be my hundredth visit to the site - because anytime anyone comes to visit me, I make it a point to bring them here. This time, the special thing was the newest attraction just outside the entrance - The Humayun's Tomb Site Museum. This large, spectacular, truly itnernational standards museum is a hidden gem - waiting to be discovered. The collection and display are totally top-notch, and the exhibits from the site are exceptional. The museum has the 18 feet original finial of Humayun's tomb - 16th centiury original piece - and made of gold! And the Immersive gallery literally transports you to the 15th century with its 270 degree screen and music. The museum is a wholesome entertainment, and the visit to the Area and World Heritage Site is totally incomplete without visiting the museum. The entry ticket is nominal, and it is open on all days except Mondays and national holidays.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 November 2024
- geo3Calgary, Canada2,448 contributionsBeautiful tomb, and large grounds which are also worth exploring. This site was not crowded. It is worthwhile walking up on to the terrace around the actual tomb, and then entering the mausoleum itself. Unlike the Taj Mahal, you can take pictures inside the mausoleum (or at least the guide thought it was fine). Some other reviews have talked about coming by public transit, which is definitely possible, but coming by taxi is far easier! This was the first place I saw the two-price system for foreigners vs. Indian citizens, but that seems to be quite standard at Indian tourist attractions. Very worthwhile. The nearby Sunder nursery (park) is also worthwhile exploring if you are in the area anyway.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 September 2024
- Princes of travelParis, France7,726 contributionsHumayun's Tomb is located in the east of the city, accessible via public transport, taxi or tuktuk. Entrance costs INR 600 per person. The main mausoleum, dedicated to Humayun, was erected in 1565 at the request of his widow and combines the finesse and grandeur of Persian-inspired architecture. Prototype of Mughal tombs, surrounded by gardens, this tomb inspired the Taj Mahal. The site includes several tombs, including that of Isa Khan near the entrance. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. From the main entrance you can admire the gardens with the canals filled with water. Efforts are made to maintain the area in a suitable state of cleanliness, including the collection of dead leaves, waste, etc. The gardens are watered and the whole is pretty. The best time to visit is in the morning, before the crowds or at the end of the day when the sun illuminates the red sandstone facade with its golden rays, giving it a pretty pink tint. One of the essential visits to New Delhi. Allow 2 hours time to see everything.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- mel7155Singapore, Singapore1,355 contributionsGreat place to visit . Entrance fee is about US$7 where you can buy online. A suggestion is to visit in the mornings so that you get the whole place to yourself . There are some impressive and simple exhibits that highlight of the history as well as some of the artifacts that are quite informative . Good to spend about 30-45 minutes in this attraction before moving on to other sites . As it opens s at sunrise and during summer , Great plan to see this site together with Qutub Minor before 0800hrs to escape the sunlight !Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada5,300 contributionsThe Mughal empire is responsible for this fabulous edifice and the grounds, but it has Afghan and Persian elements in the architecture and design. The first garden tomb in India was built by Humayun, second Mughal Emperor’ widow Hajji Begum around 1565 AD at a cost of 1.5 million rupees. This site houses 150 graves of the ruling families and has been described as The Necropolis of the Mughal dynasty and. It was the inspiration of the Taj Mahal, built a century later. It's a significant place with intricate artwork, substantial white marble domes, impressive lattice work and beautiful tiled floors. A significant place of beautyVisited December 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 December 2024
- Flipperty GibbertCarlisle, United Kingdom244 contributionsThis is a well known, well visited site in Nizzamudin area- a district covered in monuments and mausolea. It is clean and well managed and there is much to see at this location. Take time to check out all the other tombs here too. A mausoleum always makes me contemplate the differences between the haves and the have nots- what do most of us imagine we will leave behind in death? Perhaps we have homes that we want to pass onto our children, or maybe we just own a few nice nik-naks that we would like others to appreciate when we are gone? Maybe we just want people to remember that we were kind? I wonder about the powerful, and the 'legacy' that they want to leave behind... the symbols that prove how important they were; evidence that their might existed- so much so, that they often spent their entire lives planning and building sepulchres that will define their importance for eternity. When it comes down to it, that is all that these mausoleums represent- the faded power and egos of historic men- an attempt to prove that they mattered.... forever. Having said that, Humayun's tomb is very nice! It was designed by the architect who designed the Taj Mahal (but long after Humayun had passed) or so our guide told us. Its symmetry is beautiful, its contrasting red and white carved and inlaid decoration, stunning, and it is HUGE- there is more than just Humayun in there and much more space besides. There are views of other domes in the surrounding area from the top floor and many other tombs on site which are worth exploring in their own right: Isa Khan's for example. The walled gardens are niched, arched and interspersed with decorated gateways and overhanging balconies. The gardens make this so much more appealing- stunning water features which tinkle like the monsoons, and the mirrored pools reflecting the building's beauty. Trees offer much needed shade from summer sun and a home to wildlife. Parakeets and Mynahs squabble over nooks in the walls. It is a peaceful oasis in a busy city- a place to reflect on beauty, both natural and manmade... and perhaps on legacies and power also....Visited January 2025Travelled with friendsWritten 17 February 2025
- jfoxworthySanta Rosa, California467 contributionsVery crowded but well worth the time to visit. The buildings are amazing loved walking around the grounds enjoying all the school kids waving at us asking lots of questions. My personal favorite Why You So Old? I replied why you so short? Had lots of fun exploring the Tomb. Only negatives if India is going to charge such expensive ticket prices to tourist maybe turn the fountains on and pay some people to pick up the garbage.Visited January 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2025
- VadimMurmansk, Russia35,007 contributionsIf you only visit Delhi here, you will not agree with most travelers who characterize the capital as a dirty and unattractive city. For it is very clean. We toured Delhi at the end of a long voyage through West India, where the first city was Agra with its famous Taj Mahal. Historically, however, it is more accurate to begin with Humayun's tomb, as it was the model for the world-famous tomb of Shah Jahan's beloved wife. The opposite is true here. His first wife, Haji Begum, commissioned a tomb for her husband, the Shah of the Great Mughals, Humayun. At the same time, the emperor's remains were moved here many years after his death. The grief-stricken widow invited Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, an architect from Herat, to build the tomb, as Persian architects were quoted much higher in Islamic architecture. The tomb was the center of a huge garden that symbolized a garden of paradise waiting for a righteous Muslim. The mausoleum is called "the bedroom of the Timurids", because it is also where Haji Begum herself and his great-grandson, a beloved bradobre, a military commander, a couple of emperors who did not die of their own death and even masons were buried. So that Humayun "there" doesn't get bored... Not much remains of the gardens, though. The garden's geometry is symmetrical and represents four squares separated by paved paths and two centrally intersecting water channels symbolizing the four rivers that flow in the Jannat, the Islamic concept of paradise. You can't walk on lawns, but locals often ignore it.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 October 2024
- Czar EmmanuelManila, Philippines10,221 contributionsWhile the place is named only after the Mughal Emperor Humayun, the whole complex actually contains the tombs of 160 members of the royal family. Two tombs are particularly spectacular and impressive -- that of Emperor Humayun himself and, older to it by two decades, is the tomb of the nobleman Isa Khan Niyazi. The place has beautiful structures, lush gardens and a fountain. To reach the place, you can take the violet line of the metro (subway), get off at JLN stadium and walk or, better yet, take a "tuktuk" up to the place.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 June 2024
- Raj_TeeLondon, United Kingdom1,070 contributionsHumayun’s Tomb in Delhi is a must see example of Mughal architecture, built in 1570. The guide referred to this building as mini Taj Mahal and this is evident from the design. This building is made from red sandstone whereas the Taj Mahal is made from marble. This building is a must see for history and architecture enthusiasts plus any instagrammers looking for picture perfect locations.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 August 2024
