The Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, is the world’s first open-air sanctuary, a sacred space welcoming people of all cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. More than just a monument, it is a symbol of faith, hope, and hospitality, inviting millions of visitors each year for moments of reflection, spirituality, and connection with nature.
Built atop Corcovado Mountain at 710 meters above sea level, Christ the Redeemer is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Inaugurated in 1931, the 38-meter-tall monument was designed by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by Paul Landowski, blending art and spirituality harmoniously with the natural landscape.
Elevated to the status of Archdiocesan Sanctuary in 2006, Christ the Redeemer plays a vital role not only as a religious landmark but also as a promoter of social and environmental initiatives that reflect Gospel values and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

- Marty BielickiStuart, Florida16,118 contributionsThere is no question about the iconic statue designed by a French-Polish sculptor named Paul Landowski is a landmark not only for Rio de Janeiro, but a symbol of Brazil. It is like the Eifel Tower is to Paris and France. We decided to visit this famous 1931 Art Deco statue by an Uber. The advantage of this mode of transportation was the ability to go when we wanted. If you travel with a tour, more than likely your guide will have the ability to circumvent the long lines. We found this advantage when we took a tour up Sugarloaf Mountain the day before. Whatever way you chose, you will probably not be alone. You have two ways in getting to the peak of the 2300-foot Corcovado Mountain. One is to take the red narrow-gauge train that departs every 30 or so minutes. This train takes 20 minutes to get to the base of the complex. There are ticket machines at the office. You can choose various languages to select your ticket. We were guided by a clerk nearby. The cost of the train and admission was about $25 per person. Credit cards are accepted. If you can sit on the right going up to view more of the countryside. We were approached by someone willing to take us to a van that goes up. There is a van depot near the top where an elevator will take you up close to where the train people are getting off. Anyone can take another elevator to an escalator the rest of the way. Most people walk-up the steps. If you are strong at climbing, there is always hiking up. We did see a trail, but no walkers. The Christ the Redeemer statue and views are majestic. The statue stands 98 feet high, and Christ’s arms stretch out 92 feet. Originally, the statue was supposed to have a globe in his hands. It cost over 4 million dollars to build by 1930 using reinforced concrete and soapstone. We found that patience was what is needed to withstand the crowd up and near the statue. A common photo was to have one’s hand outstretched causing bottlenecks. If you have that patience, you will get to the outer wall where some of the best pictures are taken. You will definitely hear many different languages. Near the base of the statue, is a small chapel constructed in 2006 for the statue’s 75th anniversary. Many people missed this opportunity if you did not go to the back of the statue. At night, the statue is visible from most places in Rio de Janeiro. That visibility is one of the main reasons why Christ the Redeemer was placed on Corcovado Mountain and not Sugarloaf Mountain. - PalmcBristol, United Kingdom61 contributionsAlthough we were only in Rio for a few days we went up Corcovado twice. The first time was an organised excursion which was part of our trip so we went even though it was a very misty day. We could hardly see the statue, let alone the view. We went in a mini bus to about half way, when the official park transport takes you up to the statue. There are inevitably a lot of people there but it didn't detract from the magnificence of the statue. We also went the following day when the sky was blue! We went in the afternoon so that we could be there for sunset (about 5.15 p.m.) This time we took an Uber to the train and went up on the train - the cost included the train and the admission to Corcovado. A wonderful experience - but if you have the choice of when to to go make sure that the weather is good.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024
- Nattan MaiaFortaleza, CE46 contributionsThe Christ the Redeemer, without a doubt, is one of the most iconic places in Brazil. And it is not in vain: the 360-degree view of Rio de Janeiro from above is of falling the chin. The tour can be a bit expensive, especially for Brazilians, but I recommend you go at least once in your life. It's worth it! The view from above of Christ the Redeemer is simply unbeatable. You have the whole city at your feet, with all its beaches, hills and monuments. The statue of Christ itself is beautiful and really impressive. It is amazing to be at the foot of such a grand monument and the sanctuary within Christ the Redeemer seemed to me a place of peace and tranquility, even with the monument being crowded. When I was there there were several people praying and having an intimate spiritual moment, it seemed to me a great place to pray and reflect. It is important to have patience when visiting the place because the place is usually crowded, so have patience to take pictures and enjoy the view. I also find it important to remember that the sun in Rio de Janeiro can be strong. Wear sunscreen, water and a hat to protect yourself depending on the time you visit the site, and wear comfortable clothes and appropriate shoes. Now a golden tip is Buy your tickets online in advance to avoid queues and arrive early on the spot to avoid the bullshit.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 July 2024
- Jean CNice, France56 contributionsHow to go to Rio without visiting Corcovado the Christ the Redeemer! Impossible or your trip will be incomplete! It's like visiting Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower! Be careful it is important to make this discovery on a sunny day to avoid fog and find yourself in the clouds . . The view is impressive at 360°. A large souvenir shop awaits you when purchasing tickets. Waiting can be important depending on the time. Go early if possible. I recommend you avoid if possible on weekends as there is a higher attendance on Saturday and Sunday. Summer as winter. It takes about 90 reais per person. Provide drinks and and a helmet or hat especially in summer. Do not forget your phone device to freeze these unique moments. At the back at the base of Christ a small chapel is accessible for the most religious. When you come down you are not so far from the sugar loaf. Both are doable in the same day. Enjoy your stay in Rio 😘Visited February 2025Travelled with friendsWritten 18 February 2025
- GitorresBelo Horizonte, MG566 contributionsPay close attention when purchasing your ticket, as they already include transport and vary in price depending on the transport chosen. If you come by train, it will take you in front of the Cristo elevator (you will need to go up the elevator and then 2 escalators, you will not pass by the Paineiras Visitor Center). Another option is to take the official van from Copacabana or Largo do Machado, there will be designated points for boarding. The other option is to take a taxi or Uber to the Paineiras Visitor Center. And from there you take the official van for 5 minutes (already included in the ticket) and it leaves you at the van parking lot close to Christ. You walk a short distance, take the elevator and then 2 escalators. Studying all the logistics and considering that I was staying in Copacabana, I chose to take a taxi to the Paineiras Visitor Center (I paid R$55.00 with the meter on). I chose the Visitor Center ticket for the first time slot, at 7am. You won't get an Uber at 6am, because they won't have a passenger back, so they won't even accept the ride. But there are a lot of taxis in Copacabana and I had no difficulty getting one to take me to the Visitor Center. I got there at 6:45 am. A queue will form at the entrance to the shop. You enter the store when it opens and go completely to your left (if you already have your ticket purchased on the website and printed out). You will go through a ticket window and the attendant will check the ticket purchased on the website and exchange it for another one. After passing through this window, you will pass through the ramp (which you can see from the outside, but you have to access it after entering the store). Go through the parking lot and you will see the vans. From then on, you only show the ticket that was exchanged at the store. Get in the van and after 5 minutes it arrives at the van parking lot very close to Christ. You take a quick walk, take the elevator up and then the 2 escalators. That's it, you've arrived at the foot of the statue. The guides want to dominate the place to take photos of their clients. Doing it this way is more likely to get you to Cristo before the train and vans from Copacabana. No unofficial cars, taxis, Ubers or vans are allowed to go beyond the Visitor Center. You will necessarily need to use the van that leaves from the Visitor Center to get to the foot of the statue. To get back you can get an Uber, as there are people arriving at the Visitor Center. I paid R$23.00 for an Uber from the Visitor Center to Leblon. If that doesn't work out, you have the option of the vans that go down to Copacabana. It really makes a difference if you arrive early, book to enter at the earliest time, it fills up quickly, as people can stay as long as they wish. Estimated time to do this tour: 3 hours. If you want, you can combine Christ in the morning and the Cable Car in the afternoon (then you can catch the sunset there). I did the Cristo and the Bondinho, but if I had to choose just one, I would go for the Bondinho, because that's what I liked the most.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 May 2024
- ZanderzaidanEast Sussex, United Kingdom539 contributionsVisiting Corcovado to see Christ the Redeemer was absolutely fantastic. This iconic statue is a must-see when you're in Rio de Janeiro. The sheer size of Christ the Redeemer is mind-blowing – it’s even bigger in person than it looks in pictures. The view from up there is just stunning, giving you a 360-degree panorama of the city, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. We went there as part of a tour, so took a van up there through the lush Tijuca Forest, which adds a bit of nature and excitement to the trip. It can get VERY crowded so factor in that you will need some time to get the best pictures without random strangers. A word of caution - the gift shop here is one of the most expensive places to buy souvenirs in Rio so if you are part of a tour (usually the first stop) bear in mind you can buy the same sort of stuff later for much less. Another tip if you would go independently – try to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and the midday heat. Also, check the weather forecast because clear skies make a huge difference in the view and your overall experience.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024
- blessed116London, United Kingdom162 contributionsSuperb and not to be missed. Simply get a taxi to the station, avoid the chatter that says it is the last train and you should pick up a van to meet the train halfway up. The trains run regularly. We caught the 5 pm and it took 20 minutes to go up. Had plenty of time to see the spectacular views and marvel at the sunset before going down. If you want a taxi at a reasonable price once you have descended, I suggest you walk away from the site so that you get a reasonably priced Uber.Visited November 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 November 2024
- Christopher TNorth Yorkshire, United Kingdom298 contributionsWe went twice in the 3 days we were in Rio. The first time was during very heavy rainfall. The train taking tourists to the top had been suspended due to the rain, but the tour company drove us up the mountain in a minibus instead. Great views on the way up. Hardly anyone at the statue when we arrived, which was great as we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Arty photos of glimpses of Rio neighbourhoods peak out from under the cloud cover as we looked down. If it rains heavily, it's still worth considering a visit. The second time was during fine weather. The summit was packed with tourists and difficult to navigate around and take photos, and experience the views and statue. There's a small chapel in the plinth that Christ is standing on. Make sure you find this (entrance at the rear) and pay a visit. A must visit when in Rio.Visited December 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 January 2025
- Skyrida69Berlin, Germany83 contributionsProbably everything has already been written and said about the place itself, so here are a few tips to "optimize" the experience. 1. It's best to go there first thing in the morning when it opens, it fills up brutally quickly and then it's almost oppressive and a great photo without 28 strangers in it is impossible... 2. I recommend taking the cog railway, which rattles, creaks, slowly and comfortably up through a small jungle. The entrance fee to the statue is included in the fare. 3. Despite numerous offers with buses that "go up", it's better to "drive yourself", which can be done by train, bus, taxi, Uber and then train (see 2.) 4. Plan for around 2 hours including the journey up and back, it's practically impossible to go any faster. 5. If you're flexible, pay attention to the weather! On about half of all days it's cloudy or foggy, you can see the statue up there to a certain extent, but the great view over the city, which is really great, is then lost in the clouds. (if Christ is covered in clouds, you can't look down either ;)Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 May 2024
- GabyArgentina179 contributionsThe presence of God in full a great energy, that blessed hands of this sculptor, certainly more than a photo, a selfie is to feel there near the top and the majestic Fun fact: don’t let them bottle up with the people who take you in the vans to Christ, just get off the Uber (they are alive) go straight to the train cheaper and faster. (Very lively, I had to pay more but well the illusion of going to Christ was priceless). I went at 10am certainly a lot of crowded people, bring water, food or something, because some prices are high for being a tourist attraction, my traveler advice. Whether you are of religion or not, don’t miss this wonder of the world. Thank you so much Deus 😍 🧡Second known wonder subtract 5🧡Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2025
