The Jagdish Temple in Udaipur is a Hindu temple, built in the mid-16th century, and represents one of the most important and visited monuments in the city. The temple is accessed via a steep staircase; we arrived there during a function, during which we were able to witness ritual prayers, songs sung by the celebrant and devotees, and, finally, the community blessing, with the sprinkling with holy water. Unfortunately, photos were prohibited, and we were not able to document this evocative ceremony. Outside, taking a tour all around the structure, we were able to admire the very fine carving works, carried out centuries ago by highly skilled craftsmen, who were able to give life to the many characters portrayed on the walls and ceilings of the temple. Inside the temple sanctuary there is an idol portraying the Hindu God Jagannath, sculpted in black marble, equipped with four arms, and decorated with flowers. Around the central sanctuary there are four small temples, respectively dedicated to the God Ganesh (the auspicious Elephant God), to the God Surya (the Sun God), to the Goddess Shakti and to the God Shiva, which surround a central temple, which houses the idol of God Vishnu.

Jagdish Temple is more like a mini palace for Lord Vishnu! This 3-story wonder glitters with intricate carvings, from dancing elephants to colourful deities. Inside, the main shrine holds a stunning black stone Lord Vishnu statue, radiating peace. But don't miss the smaller shrines dedicated to other gods – each a unique gem. Free to enter this temple. Beautifully carved marble exterior. People were performing ceremonies inside while we were visiting. Beware of a guy trying to take you into a side door off the temple to sell you paintings. He is a scam artist widely spoken about on this site. We went in and I saw the paintings at the end of the room and as he started to explain about some paintings on the wall we turned around and left.

This temple is located in the city center, a few steps from the famous City Palace. Entrance is free, like all Hindu temples. Dedicated to Jagannath, this temple is a perfect example of temples with decorations carved into the stone. The main temple is dedicated to Vishnu and there are four small shrines in the corners. As in all other Hindu temples, you must take off your shoes if you want to enter the main temple. The visit is done quite quickly but it is still worth the detour because the interior and exterior decorations and sculptures are magnificent. Beware of pseudo guides who are very insistent and ignore them if you want to visit the place peacefully. A nice visit to immerse yourself in Indian life. Possibility of attending the ceremonies.

When we arrived to the temple in the morning, aarti and bhajan were in progress. We also went and had a great time receiving the darshan. experienced both happiness and inner serenity. I went back to the temple the next day before departing because I was so thrilled.

Only a short walk down the hill from the City Palace this ornate open temple resonated with the rhythms of the faithful inside wrapped within the hubbub outside. Peace and noise coinciding. Who knew that was possible?
