Hotels near Cambodia Landmine Museum
The Landmine Museum was founded by ex-child soldier Aki Ra as a way to tell the world about the horrors landmines had inflicted on his native Cambodia. He used the proceeds to clear landmines wherever he could find them. In the process of clearing small, remote villages, he began bringing home wounded and orphaned children. These children lived at the museum for over 10 years. Aki Ra also started Cambodian Self-Help Deming, an NGO that clears landmines. Today, Cambodian Self-Help Demining has cleared 9,361,685 square meters of land and 255 minefields. Please join us at the Cambodia Landmine Museum to learn about the history of landmines and what is being done now in Cambodia to clear them.

- LaurieWashington DC, District of Columbia7 contributionsThe down to earth nature of the museum and the founder’s story is impactful and provides a very real insight into the effects of the various types of land mines deployed around the world. The founders story is well worth a read and he was actually at the museum when we visited. He has been awarded a CNN Hero’s award but this fails to capture his incredible life’s story. Highly recommend - the obvious lack of funding contrasts with the glossy films and banners plus gift shop that you see at the nearby APOPO de-mining centre complete with its board of enormous sponsors. Consider leaving a sizeable donation at Akira’s museum. Currently he sets up and runs schools in areas that were previously minefields.Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 October 2024
- AWilliams1978Harpenden, United Kingdom1,172 contributionsThis museum has been set up by one incredible man called Akira. He’s a former child solider who is now trying to remove the 1000’s of remaining landmines of the 1,000,000’s that were buried across Cambodia. The museum tells his story and stories of many landmine child victims who he’s supported along with his wife. It’s a bit of a drive from Siam Reap but we hired a guide for a couple off days and he took us and explained more of the history to us. He was an exceptional guide and his English brilliant. Highly recommended. His name was Hing - +855 77 707 374Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 November 2024
- RobHANTS_Uk111 contributionsI saw this and really wanted to go. I was a little put off by one review, regarding the hour ride in a tuk-tuk, but we did and we loved it. The people at the museum were very helpful and it's an interesting place. Souvenir shop sells T-shirts. We combined this with Banteay Srei. Just agree on a price with the tuk-tuk (we agreed $25 for the day) in advance. I am really glad that we went as I was in two minds and it is quite a unique place.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 August 2024
- Rob GMilton Keynes, United Kingdom83 contributionsDon’t come to Cambodia without visiting this sobering and heart wrenching roadside museum. It is so important to get to know the struggles that the country is beating with brave people and the support of the world. The history behind the museum will leave you thinking long and hard about how easy many of our lives have been and how heroes are borne from brave and tenacious people like Aki Ra.Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2025
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,870 contributionsThe museum was outside SR so it should be combined with visits to Kbal Spean and/or Banteay Srei. The museum was assembled from many of the actual landmines and weapons found and/or defused by Aki Ra and his team. The types and variety of landmines were eye opening and the challenges to detect and get rid of them in the countryside. Aki Ra was nominated as a CNN Hero for his efforts. His background as a former Khmer Rouge and efforts for his organization to become a licensed deminer was a testament. There used to be an orphanage on site where children who were injured by landmines were raised and taken care of. Aki Ra was even on site that day and posed with visitors or signed autographs.Visited November 2024Travelled soloWritten 21 January 2025
- alisawwMissoula, Montana179 contributionsWe went here with our teen sons as we felt learning about modern history was at least as critical as ancient history. The museum is kind of out of the way, and we arrived in tuk tuk which took a minute. Perhaps take a car. The museum was pretty well done for a shoe string budget. There was a lot about the landmines themselves, which I found less interesting than the information about the history, the demining process, and the work still to be done. However, we were glad we went, and were inspired by one person's dedication to making a difference.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 June 2024
- Rebecca W19 contributionsWe visited this museum on the way out to the Banteay Srei temple and I’m so glad we did. Such an eye opening experience. The museum provides great education about the past and a current issues the country faces regarding land mines. We got to meet Aki Ra and hear first hand of his experiences and the amazing work he and his team are doing. Definitely worth making the effort to visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 July 2024
- Dianna O24 contributionsThe information on display was both interesting and informative. At the entrance, there was background information about the person who had set up the Museum. He has quite a story to tell. We were there for approximately 1.5hours. I was particularly interested to read about some of the children who were injured by landmines and to see what they are doing now.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2024
- Analiese EWaltham Forest, United Kingdom8 contributionsThe museum was smaller than we anticipated, but the personal stories were powerful. We felt a bit overwhelmed by the harsh reality of Cambodia's history. The information was well-presented, though some exhibits could use updating. A sobering but important stop on our trip.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2024
- ponaire6,319 contributionsWe spent almost 2 hours here - although I'd say most people would spend less. The museum is well thought out, well presented & extremely informative. But it's the story of the man behind this place which really grabs you- what an amazing life he's led & what he's achieved. As others say, it's quiet & doesn't get the footfall of Apopo but it deserves better recognition. We visited on our way to Koh Ker & Bang Mealea temples but it would be an easier stop on the way to Banteay Srei.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2024
