We spent about 3 hours exploring Angkor Thom. The massive stone faces on the gates were quite a sight, though it was pretty crowded by mid-morning. The heat was intense, but we managed to get some decent photos. Would recommend visiting early to avoid both crowds and peak sun.

We had a wonderful Tuk-Tuk Driver (Mr. Kim Tuk-Tuk Driver) who was recommended to us by a friend who had visited the temples a few months ago. We reached out to Mr. Kim on WhatsApp and arranged for him to tour us for the day and provide a licensed guide, which he gladly did. This was our second stop after visiting Angkor Wat and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Having a guide along really makes a difference. In addition, this temple is not as busy as Angkor Wat so it was a more relaxed visit as we didn't have the clouds. Our guide was excellent in interpreting the murals that are carved into some of the walls which was very interesting and something we would have completely missed if he wasn't with us.

Angkor Thom amazed us with its sheer scale and intricate details. The sprawling complex offered plenty to explore, from the iconic Bayon Temple with its serene stone faces to the Terrace of the Elephants. However, the heat and walking distances were a challenge, so we’d recommend bringing water and wearing comfortable shoes. While it’s undeniably impressive, some areas felt less maintained compared to Angkor Wat.

After sunrise over Angkor Wat, we headed to Angkor Thom, through the majestic gate over the bridge lined with figures. This is a series of temples, rather than one, with many many towers adorning it. Although they're now weathered, it still an impressive sight. The main temple complex is smaller than Angkor Wat, but was less busy when we were there and we were able to wander around more, through the complex underneath the towers. If you're fair-skinned like me, you'll welcome the shade whilst you look at the carvings from the 12th Century. Definitely worth a visit.

In many ways even more impressive than Angkor Wat. A huge complex of temples, home at one time to a million people, the site stirs the imagination to the creativity and vitality of its builders. Intricate well-preserved carvings tell the history alongside a wall of elephant carvings. Watch out for aggressive monkeys.

Angkor Wat gets all the coverage but I think Angkor Thom is more amazing and a must visit. The South Gate entrance with its Good & Evil statues either side of the causeway is stunning to see. Be sure to check out both the start and end sculptures as they tell the story of a snake... This gate is used to take you into the marvellous Bayon temple site. The comples is so huge though that we took transport as quite a walk from the gate in. Note that the gateway was never designed for modern traffic so we had to decamp into small mini buses - even then it was a tight squeeze through! What a place though. Come here if you possibly can.

Angkor Thom was a huge city built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is thought to have been home to over a million people. The wooden buildings have disappeared over the centuries, leavin the magnificent remains of temples, palaces and walls for 21st centry vistors to admire. The scale is awe-inspiring but so is the intricate detail of the carving. An unforgettable visit.

This is a lifetime bucket list kind of place.   It’s in out of the way Siem Reap but it’s certainly worth a special trip to visit and we in fact planned a 17 day tour of Southeast Asia with Angkor Thom as the central driver.  The complex is huge with many temples but we saw the three most popular temples - Angkor Wat, the biggest and best maintained, Ta Prohm, the temple in which huge spung trees have retaken the temples over the past 400 years or so, and finally Bayon temple with its numerous buildings with many intricate stone wall carvings.  Ta Prohm temple is where the 2001 movie Tomb Raiders was filmed.  If you can, it is also really worthwhile climbing the steps to the highest of 3 levels at Angkor Wat.   It's a little confusing on the listings of Trip Advisor's "Things to Do" in Siem Reap.  There are listings for individual temples which can each take several hours to 1/2 a day. There is Angkor Wat (the biggest and best preserved), Ta Prohm temple (with the amazing tree growth), and also Bayon temple (with numerous buildings with many intricate stone wall carvings).  Then there is the listing for Angkor Thom, which means "Angkor Great City" and which encompasses the entire Angkor complex including Bayon Temple and Angkor Wat as part of it.  Get a tour guide and stay hydrated! Just fyi!

Angkor Thom is a place of incredible charm, where nature and history intertwine in a timeless embrace. The ancient walls, wrapped in the imposing roots of ficus, seem almost to guard the remains of a past civilization, as if the plants were there to protect and preserve what remains. This contrast between stone and vivid greenery conveys a unique and engaging feeling, a perfect example of the wild beauty that characterizes many Cambodian temples. Angkor Thom is a place to remember, which caught my attention and will remain indelible in my memory.
